South African Rugby Union president Mr Oregan Hoskins on Tuesday confirmed that the Springboks’ Test against France on June 12 would take place at Newlands as initially planned.

The decision was announced after a positive meeting between SARU officials and Mr Danny Jordaan, CEO of the FIFA Local Organising Committee.

“It was a very good and helpful meeting and we made significant progress,” said Mr Hoskins. “I’m pleased to announce that we have agreed that the Test against France in Cape Town on June 12 will go ahead at Newlands as originally scheduled.”

The match takes place during the FIFA 2010 World Cup (June 11 to July 11) at a time when other major competing sports events are not permitted to be held in hosting cities.

The meeting also addressed issues around the potential hosting of Vodacom Super 14 semi-finals and finals.

“We have both been aware of the situation for some time and we in rugby have made contingency plans,” said Mr Hoskins. “However, our first preference has always been to play any such matches at our normal venues and Mr Jordaan has listened to our request and is prepared to continue those discussions.

“The next step is to get the role players from the affected unions into the same room with the LOC to see if we can’t map out a compromise.”

Many people will perhaps accuse me of being harsh in what I am about to say, but I’ll say it anyway.

How utterly useless can SARU / SA Rugby (PTY) LTD get?

Ever since the bid committe for the FIFA world cup started looking at stadia (for the failed 2002 application), those involved have known the rules pertaining to the use of both directly and indirectly affected facilities.

The FIFA 2010 World Cup was awarded in 2006, and (if my information is correct) decisions on Rugby Test match venues are typically made 18 – 24 months in advance.

Now at the last minute the S14 franchises and SA Rugby actually realise that what they agreed to a LONG time ago in respect of the FIFA World Cup may affect their own little plans.

I am sure that all of the affected franchises have been more than adequately compensated for the direct use of the stadiums, yet now it is a problem.

Whether or not a franchise like the Sharks realised that they won’t be able to hold a major sporting event (S14 semi / final) at their home ground is perhaps open to conjecture, but again, why has it taken so long to raise the issue.

It all just stinks of unprofessionalism on the part or Rugby administration in general in SA IMO.

I’d like to hear anyone else’s thought though. Maybe I’m just biased.

I think you are spot on scrummie, just so typical of SA rugby and all our administrators….

    1 – Scrumdown,

When is the S14 Semi and Final on which dates? I am looking at the last game the Bulls play, it is on the 15th of May against Stormers. The first wc football pool game at Loftus is on the 13th of June. Would that not be enough time still to hold a semi and final at Loftus if Bulls make it that far? If the final is played on the 29th that would give Loftus 2 weeks to get that ground into top shape. That is if the Bulls make the final.

How many weeks does Fifa stipulate that no other sports must be played on the world cup stadiums fields?

  • 4

It is all Fifa really, they make the rules and when you bid for the games you have to abide by them.

Do they want us not to use those stadiums 2 weeks before the world cup even begins? Sounds a bit daft actually.

Also why can Sharks not hold a semi if we make it that far (doubt it this year) as we don’t have any world cup games at the Tank but at the new stadium over the road.

How can the S14 semi and final clash with the world cup when it finishes 2 weeks before the start of the football world cup? I thought only other sporting events taking place during the world cup had to be put on hold during that time. Not before it.

Just not sure so only asking here.

GBS, it took me more than 20min to log on here today. Not sure what is up boet?

If my memory serves me correctly, the stadium “owners” have no access AT ALL to the facility for something like 4 weeks before and 2 weeks after the FIFA World Cup.

That includes things like administrative offices as well. Hence the GLRU moved out of King House at Coca-Cola Park some time ago and into offices at the JHB Stadium.

There is nothing new in these arrangements. Everything was spelt out very clearly from day one.

The FIFA rules state that a condition of a city hosting games is that during the World Cup “window” no other “major sporting event” may be held in the host city.

That’s why there is now the problem surrounding the French Test at Newlands, and also why the Sharks could be affected even thought they are not hosting games at Kings Park.

Given these rulings, I’m not even sure where teams like the Bulls and Sharks would (according to FIFA) be allowed to play S14 semi’s and finals.

As I said, I’m sure the franchises directly affected by stadium use, (Bulls, Cheetahs and Lions) have all been compensated very nicely in Euro’s or US Dollars.

7 – Scrumdown, I know we knew about it all when we won the bid. We knew what we were getting into too as all conditions were written down before we bidded for the world up.

Just never thought that no sporting events could take place in a host city 4 WEEKS before the world cup even begins. Jeepers that is a bit much, but then we knew it.

Where will we play the semi if we get a semi? (not sure my Sharks will) Bulls may and so may Stormers. So where will they play? Looking at the fixture almost every city holds a world cup pool game. So were will the S14 semi or final then take place? Brakpan?…..hehehe. GBS will be pleased. See nothing for Kimberley or East London. It will be worked out where we play the semi. Just not the same not to play it at your home ground though.

Well Boks are now allowed to play at Newlands after the world cup has started. So they have agreed to that. So let us hope mate. No way do we want to play the semi or final outside of SA.

orry mistake there. So were = So where

  • 10

another typo 🙄 orry = sorry.

I suppose that the time period from the very first discussions (2001/2002?) to present day is a long time, and at the time a team like the Bulls may never have imagined how strong their S14 franchise, and hence S14 semi / final chance may be.

Hindsight is a perfect science I guess.

All I would hope for is that the IRB, SARU and those that regulate the sport of Rugby Union could become as professional and forward thinking as FIFA.

As much as I dislike the sport as a spectacle, when comparing the worldwide development of Association Football (soccer) to that of Rugby Union over the last 35 years, it soon beomes apparent (IMO) that the IRB and it’s founder memebrs have FAILED DISMALLY.

    It really saddens me.

One beautiful afternoon in the Garden of Eden, Adam calls out to God, “Lord, I have a problem.”

“What’s the problem, Adam?” God replies.

“Lord, I know you created me and have provided for me and surrounded me with this beautiful garden and all of these wonderful animals. I appreciate all that you have given me, but I’m just not happy”, Adam answers.

“Why is that, Adam”, God asks.

“Lord, I know you created this place for me, with all this lovely food and all of the beautiful animals, but I have no one special to share it with and I’m lonely”, Adam explained to God.

“Well Adam, in that case I have the perfect solution. I shall create a woman for you”, God told him.

Perplexed, Adam asked, “What’s a woman, Lord?”

God replies, “This woman will be the most intelligent, sensitive, caring, and beautiful creature I have ever created. She will be so intelligent that she can figure out what you want before you want it. She will be so sensitive and caring that she will know your every mood and how to make you happy. Her beauty will rival that of the heavens and earth.. She will cook and clean for you and do everything that you ask without ever complaining. She will provide every sexual need and fantasy you will ever think of and meet all of your sexual needs. She will bear your children and raise them without complaints. This woman will be the perfect companion for you.”

“Wow! That sounds great,” exclaimed Adam. “Where is she?”

“Not so fast,” said the Lord. “A woman this fantastic is going to cost you.”

    “How much”, asked Adam.

“An arm and leg”, God replied.

Adam thought about this for a moment, then replied, “What can I get for a rib?”
