Munster announced today that Jean de Villiers will return to South Africa at the end of the current season.

The decision to return home was determined by his desire to make himself available for selection for the South African 2011 World Cup squad, a situation Munster were aware of when they initially contracted de Villiers. De Villiers, who is currently abroad with the Munster squad on a warm-weather camp said, “My decision to return to South Africa is solely determined by a desire to put myself in contention for the Sprinboks RWC 2011 squad.

“I feel this is perhaps my last opportunity to represents my country at the Rugby World Cup and after consultation with SARU it has become clear that to qualify for selection players must be playing their rugby in South Africa in the season leading up to the competition.

” I’m thoroughly enjoying my time here in Munster and I think it would be fair to say that had the RWC not been a factor, then I would be remaining for at least the next 2 seasons. I would not rule out returning here after RWC 2011 either, if the opportunity arose.

“For now though,” he continued,” my entire focus is on the Magners League and Heineken Cup campaigns. There’s a lot of rugby to be played yet in the red shirt and I’m looking forward immensely to continuing my involvment with a great squad.”

Munster Chief Executive Garrett Fitzgerald in announcing the news said, “Jean missed the 2003 World Cup through injury and played just 40 minutes in 2007. So his desire to represent his country in the most prestigious rugby competition is totally understandable.

” Jean made us aware of this scenario before he joined us last September. He has been a hugely positive addition to the squad this season. His influence has grown and continues to grow as he becomes more and more comfortable within the squad.

“While he will be a major loss, we fully respect his ambition and he will leave us at the end of the season with our very best wishes.

Schleppers of the week: from SS
    What were they thinking?

Newcomer of the week: There were some impressive rookie displays over the weekend, with guys like Lionel Mapoe, Jackson Willison and Gerhard van den Heever catching the eye. This week’s prize, however, goes to Lions replacement scrumhalf Jacques Coetzee. We only ask that the European club scouts form an orderly line outside the door.

Welcome to the Super 14: WP Nel, last year’s frontrow find of the Currie Cup, had one of the harsher introductions to Super 14 rugby we’ve seen in a while. Super 14 is not Currie Cup, WP, just ask your teammates.

Mysteries of the Super 14: Teams have been complaining about the burden of travel for as long Super Rugby has been in existence. We wonder if any of them noticed that six out of the weekend’s seven matches were won by the away teams.

    Congratulations to:
Stirling Mortlock for becoming the first player in Super Rugby history to pass the 1000-point mark. Morne Steyn for passing the 500-point mark. Gary Botha, Meyer Bosman, Nathan Sharpe and Adam Ashley-Cooper on playing their 50th Super Rugby games for their respective franchises.

Brotherly love: Half of the Crusaders pack was made up of brothers on Saturday. Owen and Ben Franks packed down in the frontrow, Sam and George Whitelock were just behind them. Adam Whitelock, the third brother, was on the bench, but didn’t get a chance to come on the field.

Lights out: Since the days of Rassie Erasmus’ disco lights the Cheetahs have always been at the forefront of technology as they look to give their team an on-field advantage. We are reliably informed that their latest defensive manoeuvre, dramatically put on display last Friday, is called “The Tripswitch”.

My lasting memory of Round 1 of the 2010 Super 14 will be:

.The new way in which the laws are being interpreted
.The Bulls putting 50-plus on the board against the Cheetahs
.The Stormers running on empty in the second half against the Lions
.The fact that I now know for sure the Lions won’t win a game this season
.The way in which referee Keith Brown handled the Sharks v Chiefs match
.Watching the crowd pelt Stephen Donald with bottles in Durban
.How poorly my SuperBru picks turned out
    .The Super 14 has started?!

    Gary Boshoff (News24 sportswriter)

Reflecting on this past weekend’s Super 14 results, it was pleasing to note improved performances by both the Highlanders and the Reds in their respective local derbies. Both these teams have been on a downward slide over the last few seasons and their improved competitiveness augers well for the competition. Let’s hope the quality of their game keeps on improving as the competition gains momentum.

However, the same cannot be said about SA’s perennial underachievers, the Lions, who once again did not live up to the early expectations in their clash against the Stormers. While we are all aware of the mammoth task facing coach Dick Muir, it cannot be expected of him to perform miracles overnight. Lifting players like Willem Stoltz, Doppies la Grange, Michael Killian and quite a few others (who are Currie Cup standard at best) to the required performance levels of Super 14 rugby will require patience.

Hy lyk my so tipe ou.

  • 378

Aag wat, ek het eintlik ‘n softspot vir hulle, en try hulle net bietjie moed inpraat. Nie kak span nie, maar ek dink hulle verwag te veel in hul eerste jaar, en veral verag hulle te veel van Carlos Spencer! Rose en Francis was IMHO beter gewees Saterdag as Carlos.
