Bad light and a wet outfield have prevented play from starting on the fourth day of the second test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Yesterday VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni saw off the tricky period with the second new ball, put together the second double-century stand of the innings, and virtually batted South Africa out of the Test. It was only the second instance of four Indian batsmen scoring centuries in the same innings. It was also Laxman’s fourth hundred in nine Tests at Eden Gardens, taking his tally at his beloved ground to 1041 runs at 94.63.

South Africa 296 & 6/0 (0.5 ov)
India 643/6d
South Africa trail by 341 runs with 10 wickets remaining

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 JP Duminy, 7 Ashwell Prince, 8 Paul Harris, 9 Wayne Parnell, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Morne Morkel.

India: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 M Vijay, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 S Badrinath, 7 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 8, Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Amit Mishra, 11 Ishant Sharma.

9.40 am The next inspection is at 10.00 am. Join us then for more updates. The light too is slightly dull.
9.35 am The umpires are out there inspecting the wet areas. Some areas are being filled with saw dust and the ground staff are at work. The umpires are having a discussion with the curator.
While you wait, have a look out our show. A blaster, a master or a limping captain – who do you think will win the best ODI batting performance of the year? Cricinfo Awards’ jury has short-listed five from the ten nominations that we had. Watch Harsha Bhogle, Ian Chappell and Sanjay Manjrekar discuss those performances.
8.45 am Wet outfield delays start. Welcome to day 4 and I am afraid there is some bad news. Overnight intermittent light showers have left the bowler’s run-up area slightly damp. There will be an inspection at 9.30 am to see whether it has dried up by then. There is no rain now nor was the overnight rain heavy. Super-sopper is at work. So 9.30 am it is, join us then for more updates.

  • 20

    puma @ 16
tomorrow’s forecast is sunny … hope that it rains for the rest of today though … seems that their draining system isnt up to scratch!!

  • 21

20 – Ash, If rains for the rest of today and their drainings system is not up to much, just maybe it will delay play for tomorrow too 😀

We probably wont draw this but just hope we don’t lose by a innings. Pity we never got those runs in the first innings. A draw here would have been just fine to win the series.

  • 22

    puma @ 21
dont think we’ll see any play for the rest of today, puma
sooooooo we’ll be going into the last day with 7 wickets standing … if we cant draw from THERE, then we certainly dont deserve the number one ranking!!

    from cricinfo

3.49 pm Dim Murky light. All the covers are back on. It looks highly unlikely that we would get any play. And meanwhile, Morne Morkel and Wayne Parnell are giving some fielding practice to nine and 10-year olds.
    ….
And Eric Simmons is giving catch practice to Gary Kirsten and Paddy Upton. And fwiw, Gary and Paddy are not dropping any catches. 😆

  • 24

22 – Ash, Who has gone out. Have not seen much of the crici today. Know that Smith went for 20. Then I had to go out to a meeting came back and saw play delayed and 3 wickets down. Depends if the out of from batters come to the party tomorrow. This just might be the time they do and get a big score. Or just keep batting the whole day and not lose their wickets.

  • 25

hehehe, unfortunately its the out-of-form-batsmen that need to save us now!! 😆

  • 26

Hi all. All I can say is that I hope we get a full day in tomorrow. Its empty is we draw the game because of weather,if we want to draw the game we must bat all day tomorrow.

  • 27

26 – Morning Winston, so far so good. Amla and Prince still there. Need to keep focused against the spinners.
