It certainly looks like we chose the right weekend to get away from civilization and into the bush. Only one of the SA Teams managed a win this weekend… and there were 4 losses.

First up on Friday morning there was the diabolical Sharks who lost 35 / 6 against the Crusaders, then the Stormers went and lost against the Brumbies by 2 points (pencil in the Brumbies as a semi-finalist this year). Then on Saturday morning the Lions went and had their expected loss against the Hurricanes… by this time it was already 0 from 3 attempts by the SA sides.

Saturday afternoon the Cheetahs went and bent right down for a roggering by the Highlanders…. SA sides 0 from 4…

It was now all up to the Bulls to rectify matters… and yes, they saved South Africa’s honour again, bagging their 3rd successive 5 Log points, scoring 6 tries in the process.

I thought that not too many Stormers, Sharks, Lions and Cheetahs supporters would be in the mood for rugby talk, so I’ve included some photo’s of a non-rugby related nature, to sooth some severely stressed rugby supporters (Pity that I forgot my 10 Mega Pixel Camera’s charger at home though, the results could have been wayyyyyyyyyyyy better…. sorry).

How close to heaven can one get, without kicking the bucket? Well, damn close…

I spent the weekend on a private game farm in the Dwarsberge, about 30km from the Botswana border, as the crow flies. 4000 hectares of the most beautiful bush imaginable. There were White Lions, Golden Wildebeest, Black Impala, Buffaloes, Girrafes, Zebra, Sable, Kudu, waterbuck, Rooihartbeeste, Klipspringers…. man, too many differnt types of animals to mention.

There are 4 x 9-month old cheetah cubs as well as 2 x 4-month old lion cubs in the garden at the main house, a magnifficent hotel-like rock and thatch palace, right on top of the mountain, overlooking the most beautiful vista.

The company was good, the game drives excellent… the rest and relaxation priceless!

What a wonderful Country South Africa is!!

So, cheer up…. there’s always next week…. and life remains a song, sing it all out.

    GBS, Welcome back.

Why are those White Lions Caged? Or is it where they breed them?

Looked like a great place though. Hope you enjoyed your weekend away.

Well done to your Bulls. They were oustanding.

GBS nice man, hope you rested well, nature is great in the whole of SA, so many variations , you better play for that Tshukudu prize, that place is also great.

I had a hard game to keep score for, between jumping trough the ceiling, cursing the ref, taking a sip , keeping the scores up, …. but somehow i made it, the difficult way. Will talk to you for more advice later.

Puma & SuperBul – I’m now so laid back and relaxed you cannot believe it…

Puma, the White lions are in huge camps where they have ample bush and proper running space but cannot be let go in the open veld, just too many unfenced camps and dwellings and on top of that there are very rare breeds of game there… black Impala (each worth over R 150 000.00), Golden Wildebeest at R 250 000.00 a pop (as opposed to Black Wildebeest or Blue Wildebeest)…. Disease free Buffalo (each worth R 350 000.00)… Sable, Rooihartbeeste…. man at conservative estimate there is over R 60 000 000.00 worth of animals.

Oh, by the way, the Sharks game is the only rugby I watched this weekend…

While you guys were on the edge of your seats with the Bulls game, we were out on a game drive… skietlamp in the hands… the owner was looking to quicly shoot 2 normal red Impala…. for the Lions to eat….

Man, and can the guy shoot…. dropped two Impala standing together… first shot the one and while they jumped from the shot, he shot the second one… no suffering… clean shots! It was just whoop, whoop… 2 down!

    GBS

  • 6

Geluk Bulle! Julle maak my trots!

  • 7

    hallo hallo.

Ek moet se, eks eintlik glad nie negatief nie.

    Lekkkeeerrrr man GBS!

Self fantastiese naweek gehad!

  • 13

Eish GBS nou kyk jy die verloor spanne. Het jy darem die game ge-pvr?

  • 14

BDB, Ou bismark is nou eens net ‘n d@@s.

    GBS hi !

I was in a game park too cept my “wildlife” was hookers & Crims … no, not Australia (although I can understand the natural mental leap), I was in Dongguan – the crime capital of China 😀

I still did not see Quade Cooper though …

Without trying to have a stab at the WP, and their supporters, there can be no doubt that it was a seriously bitter pill they swallowed with that last minute loss to the Brumbies.

The difference between the Bulls, and the other 4 teams is very clear to see, the Bulls play with believe, passion, desire, zip, gutspa, pisaz. I can just admire them. Even 17:0 down against the Warratahs, I knew, they will get the OZ fluckers in the 2nd half, mark my words, and jou wragtag, from 17:0 down, they racked up 48 points, un flippen believable.

There is few things as scary as the bulls camping on your goalline, or kicking to within 5 metres and having the lineout. I counted 8 times the Bulls didn’t kick to goal. If that is not convidence off the highest order, I don’t know what is. The bulls are absolutely lethal in the red zone, unstoppable basically.

Add Morne with his boot that just don’t miss from anywhere, goodness me, it must be heaven having a team like the Bulls to support. I can just stand on the sideline and clap.

And then, that 3 minute huge defensive effort on the Bulls goal line, just before halftime, might just have been the difference between winning and loosing, that period was spectacular to watch.

Coming back to the WP, the difference between the Bulls and Stormers are very clear, the Bulls refuse to loose, and play that way. The Stormers, tried a ping pong defensive approach, and hoped for some loose balls to latch on. They can’t make a try if their life depended on it. They can at best score from mistakes and turnovers from the opposition, whereas the Bulls make tries at will. Are all off you also waiting in anticipation the Bulls and Stormers match ?

Even though they did defend pretty well against those Brumbies, their approach to the match was a non risk approach, you indeed need luck to win matches like those, or the opposition making a mistake or two. They were so predictable with their kicking ball away the whole day, the Brumbies had 3 to 5 players waiting at the back all the time for the inevitable kick upfield.

The whole match it was clear, if the Stormers win this one, they can count themselves very very lucky. Also, I am quite certain that when the score was 12:12 for a long time, all Stormers supporters were praying like hell that they are good enough to hold out for a draw, am I right or am I right. The Bulls would see it as an insult praying for a draw with still quite a lot off time left to play.

I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen with that final conversion from model boy JP, one has to agree, the girls must go mad for him. Jip, he got great reviews for his goalkicking the last 2 years, but fact is, I have seldom seen him kicking from this kind off pressure. King Willem de Waal has kicked these type off critical kicks countless times over 7 years, for JP this is new territory, did you guys notice the brown patch in his pants just before his kick, I don’t think that was the pitch. Very very weak attempt at that conversion. One surely needs nerves off steel to kick those over.

But, on the positive, there is no question the Stormers are improving, but I say they will need to be very very good to make the semi’s, that is for sure, I don’t think they are good enough yet, but they are working hard, that is clear. Good luck Stormers, I do hope you make it, and yes, I was disspointed to that you did not get that conversion. You must loose your fear off defeat.

16: O ja, hy is nie ‘n Bulle ondersteuner nie.

  • 18

    I need a week like that, nevermind a weekend… 🙁

GBS lovely photos, have put that place on my shopping list if i ever win a R90 million lotto. I really want it.

Sad about haveing to shoot the buck, but it has to be done, so will need to hire someone to do that, as the hub and i would not be able to. 🙂

  • 24

    Treehugger

You will unfortunately need a lot more than the R90 mil to buy a place like that. 😯

  • 25

Bloust maybe not, but if i do need more “howz about a loan” 😆

  • 26

23@ Boomninny – We had a lovely weekend, the photo’s do not do justice to what we experienced…. not even close..

We braaied Kudu Fillets, had Eland Sosaties (Kebabs), feasted on all sorts of game boerewors… hell there was even a home made game salami / cabanossi and of course heaps of biltong and droeëwors…

Sundowners with a view like that was special…. one can see for miles and miles and not a single man made structure or power cable pilon on the horizon… almost as it was left for Adam and Eve. I feel very privledged!

The Vodacom Bulls won 100% of their line-out ball against the Waratahs and that laid the foundation for their 48-38 victory, Bulls forward coach, Johan van Graan, said on Monday.
And thanks to the good possession from that phase, numerous rolling mauls could be used as a platform for attacks.

“Our line-out drives were excellent and that created numerous scoring opportunities for us,” Van Graan said.

He was pleased with the side’s ball control and possession.

“We had 59% territorial advantage in the end and also had 53% possession. It was excellent, considering our poor start.

The scrums again went well, despite the Waratahs having Benn Robinson in their front row.

“It was a good first phase for us again and another good try was scored from a scrum. The backs created some great space with that and exploited it.”

According to Van Graan, the ball was in play for 35 minutes, which was the highest of all matches played last weekend. It is also more that the Cheetahs match (29) and Brumbies (33).

“As teams are starting to play beter, this number will go up,” Van Graan explained.

The Bulls kicking coach, Vlok Cilliers, was a happy man too, considering Morné Steyn’s 100% strike rate.

“It was quite pleasing, especially those kicks from the touch lines. Those are vital as it adds the extra two points.”

Cilliers was not happy with all the tactical kicking.

“Our defensive kicking was very good and Morné in particular relieved the pressure quite well. On attack we tended to kick too far and could not get to the receivers in time. They could counter by running from the back,” Cilliers said.

“This was a great test of character for the team and the players showed good temperament as we only got ahead on the score board in the 50th minute. It shows how tough it was to get back into the game.”

    Gbs

Ek rus nerens so lekker so in die bos nie…

  • 29

27@ Blouste – I watched the 1-hour highlites package of the Bulls game… what struck me was the patience when they were 17 points down… not a single sign of panic…

Danie Rossouw at No 8 did not work well and we certainly missed Deon Stegmann before he came on. Kuun is really a poor man’s Stegmann.

Our tight 5 are doing an excellent job and going from here I’m looking forward to a loosie combo of Stegmann, Dewalt Potgieter and Spies.

With Jacques-Louis Potgieter coming on to play in the No 12 channel worked very well… moving Wynand to the No 13 channel. Personally I’d like to see that as 1st choice run on situation… 9 Fourie du Preez, 10 Morne Steyn, 11 Francois Hougaard, 12 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 13 Wynand Olivier, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 15 Zane Kirchner… with 3 backline players on the bench, Heini Adams, Stephan Dippenaar, Jaco (Moses) van der Weshuizen.
