England and Europe, in fact the whole Northern hemisphere gripped in the coldest Winter for years left most people indoors.

I am getting cabin fever…………
I WISH IT WAS SUMMER….

Pietman called from Korea after his trip back from the Namib. He walked straight back into a snow covered town from the warm Namibia. Yes from a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius to -12 in Incheon, South Korea.

I had the most wonderful morning walk at Tshukudu Game Lodge, today. Got up early and arrived at the Lodge with a warm cup of coffee waiting. Waiting for all the other guests to arrive we enjoyed the bird life around us. The Lodge have a bird restaurant at the porch and hundreds of birds feast from the fruit and seed put out for them.

Recently, in fact about 10 months ago the lodge had the privilege to have Savanah, a female Cheetah, giving birth to 4 cubs. She was brought there 12 years back and although she was tame she roamed the reserve freely. She never mated until last year ,and as a result 2 cubs were born. Sadly they were stillborn. Earlier this year she gave birth to 4 cubs but rejected 1 immediately. The rejected cub was successfully hand raised.

She raised the other 3 cubs and since early December she started hunting with them. She was so tame that she joined the early morning walks that are conducted daily at the Lodge. On one of these walks she entertained the guests with a life impala kill. The young cheetahs was with her and the guests had the privilege to experience the whole hunt and feeding.

Savannah and the cubs have been roaming the reserve for the last few weeks. They must have come across what we presume to be lions and Savannah gave her life protecting her cubs.
The cubs are back safely.

We are deeply saddened at losing Savannah as she was such a part of our lives.

Today was a special day at the Lodge. The 3 cubs joined us for the first time on their own in the Bush walk. They were still calling and looking for their mother who was killed 5 days ago. But the playful cubs entertained us all on this emotional walk.

Thats what i did today

Enjoy the photos i took on this walk, click on my nick and go to “Bush walk with Cheetahs” I must add i filled my camera with hundreds of memories and more will be posted later.

    1) Spent time with my son BonzaiGBS because this morning I had to have him at the airport for his flight to George for the first term of the school year… I ignored phone calls… I ignored all outside influences.

    2) Worked last night, through the night… did not go to bed at all…. has’nt this year just exploded with a bang??

Tonight, I’ll be lights out by 20H00…. I bet ya!

Sunday. Hmm. Sat at an ineffectual border post manned by a home affairs official who looked as if she couldn’t wait to finish her shift, despite having been on duty for at least 5 minutes. Fought with 2 taxi drivers who thought they were more important than my family and I, despite us being in front of them in the line.

Then once through, we got home, sat on the stoep, looked at the mountains all around us, lit a fire and braaied the most delicious rump steaks washed down with the Captains nectar.

Oh yes, I phoned a colleague to see if his flight out of Heathrow was actually going to get off the ground this time. What’s a 5 day delay?

No Cheetahs I’m afraid, just the odd Banded Legged Golden Orb Spider, a monitor lizard or two in the garden, and baby Gheko’s by the handful going about their bussiness.

    “Darkest africa” has it’s advantages.

Sh1t, how long until some meaningful Rugger?

What did I do yesterday? Ran a rugby practice at 0C (32F). Now that’s two practices in a row at that temperature. So much for Global Warming, brrrrr. 🙁

You think Al Gore maybe should return his Nobel prize & Oscar? 🙂

    JimT @13

At least you have some Rugby activity.

The nearest I’ve got to anything in the last two weeks is putting together a proposal to start a senior league here.

We have almost no club activity here, but a lot of activity and development at primary school level.

Now a few of us want to offer to get a small league going with the blessing of the national Union, but oooh the politics.

    Vaaark I hate it!

    Where are you situated?

    15 – Snoek

Swaziland. Moved here middle of 2008. Still involved in club Rugby in JHB as well, but spend 98% of my life here now.

Quiet, (mainly) crime free and the best biking roads in the world.

Do you want to start a rugby club fot the locals or SA citizens working in Swaziland?

  • 18

    17 – Snoek

Myself and a couple of colleauges have already started a club near our factory. It’s mixed with a couple of ex-pats, but mainly locals.

We have ±30 guys at practice.

There are a number of other clubs in Swaziland, but with almost no fixtures it’s VERY difficult to keep youngsters interested.

There is also a good deal of difference of opinion among Swazi’ Rugby people regarding the running of the Union, but I would rather not get involved with that nonsense.

My goal in life is to develop Rugby Union.

We have an action plan to start a small league (5-6 teams) playing at a centralised venue every second Saturday.

We have enough experienced people to make it work without putting any strain on the Swaziland Rugby Union or their recourses, but unless they buy into it and give their blessing it won’t work, and I would not want to be involved.

It’s a difficult situation, but we have a determined bunch that really want to make it work.

    Sorry, recourses should be resourses.
