Tackle 2
Was this cited ? It was not.

So the IRB citing & subsequently banning Dan Carter for a week was nothing less than a knee jerk reaction cementing the notion that if you are willing to whine like a little girl loud enough & long enough to the media you too can affect the outcome of an “independent” judiciary. It is simply no different to those annoying parents who cave in to recalcitrant children rather than tolerate the irritation of whining to modify the behavior of their children by providing an undesired result.

Coaches who whine about Richie McCaw’s “untouchability” or Bakkies Botha “aggressiveness” – especially immediately prior to a game – are nothing short of an extension of Ivan Pavlov & his 1890’s behavior modification experiments with dogs salivating at the ringing of a bell at dinner time. This should not be tolerated, in fact I believe coaches should be held to a standard of behaviour off the pitch the way their players are on the pitch.

I also firmly beleive Coaches & Captains should be permitted, indeed required to complete a formal assessment of every referee’s performance after every match – as should the linesmen & TMOs. These confidential 360 degree reports should go to the IRB where input to a database they merge to give the IRB an independent ranking of referee’s performances & only the referees with the highest scores get to control the games between the highest ranked teams or QF-Final games at RWCs.

Stu Dickinson’s reffing on Saturday was appalling on a scale unseen for quite some time (by me at least) &, no, I am not suggesting it was biased as I believe he missed a huge volume of stuff from both teams. It was bad enough that he clearly lost the respect of the teams on the pitch & subsequently control of the game. The last 10 minutes were a farce of note perhaps even a tragedy of Greek proportions. Either the ABs were doing the same thing wrong over & over & over in which case it should have been a penalty try or the Italians were “boring in” over & over & over in which case it should have been a penalty to the ABs … either way – the game could have moved on ! I am not claiming to know which it was but I can claim that whatever the referee was doing WAS NOT WORKING ! He did not even ask his linesmen to line up & help him supervise either side of the scrum ! Instead he ran the last 10 minutes like Ground Hog Day – excruciating for players & viewers alike. Actually, what surprised me most was that it did not just result in an almighty punch up from the sheer frustration both teams must have felt !

Three final points :
i) I am not questioning whether or not DC should have been cited merely the motivation behind it.
ii) Yes, I know “untouchability” is not a real word 🙂
iii) & Yes, I called them “Linesmen” – calling them Assistant Referees would indicate they assisted in some way & THAT they did not do !

    You sound gatvol…?

But I get your point, surely after the yellow for an infringement in the red zone the next penalty should have been close to a penalty try…or the one after that…or the one after that…or….!

Stu was suspended for poor performance a few years back, he was out for 6 months plus. He came back and looked ok, sometimes even good. I hope Saturdays performance will rid us of him forever.

Anyway, lets not be one-eyed, even Kaplan had a poor show last night. he had some penalties I have never seen before…but he did let a short throw into the lineout go….similar to the one costing the Cheetahs a try in the CC final. And no, I am not saying he was wrong in the CC final…but if so he was wrong last night. Comes back to the accountability of refs…tis killing the game I tell you.

Talking about that 11 scrums on the AB line?
I would not give a penalty try there, it did not look like they moved the ABs back. It was a great defending off you line by the ABs.
Why the Italians did not try to run it?

They really hoped for a gift from the ref.

To add to my comment , that 11 scrums is what WE need, the more you practice the better you get. Refs are killing the scrum by awarding penalties for little technical faults. Sometimes its even the ref who does not call the crouch, touch , engage consistent, but MR Whistle blower have the right to decide everything.

Refs have to much say in outcomes of close games. And they are not accounable as it seems.

  • 5

superBul, I am talking about penalties, not scrums. Got nothing to do with good defence.

Yes I was gatvol 🙁 I stayed up late & actually paid real money to watch the game on Justin.tv cos none of the slack a*se Asian Sports Channels were showing it … & all I got was scrum reset after scrum reset after scrum reset ! I was ready to start practising self-tattooing just to relieve the boredom !!

Good defence is a great thing I agree but let those little backs chuck the ball around a bit too to avoid monotony else we risk looking like Martin Johnson is the Coach 😯

A citing is supposed to be for a redcard infringement. The Dan Carter high tackle was never more than a penalty. The problem started when citing officers do not know the difference.

  • 8

So why was that not cited? Looks like both are choking him to death there. Terrible that they were not cited for that tackle.

    Not good enough.

    Princess,

Heard your opening a whine bar. 😉

    Die Valk

Naahh … it is okay, the ABs are used to being held to a higher standard 🙂

Just making a point that the ‘rules’ about citings seem to be a movig goal.

They moved again last night I see as Habana was cited for giving someone a nudge with his toe as he asked “Oi ! Are you okay mate ?”

TV coverage is making this small incidents a big issue. If they concentrate more on the real game situations , these little flare up will go back to their rightful place.

There is far more aggressive slapping of hands and taking guys away from the ball, the so called cleaning out. But we cant make this game to sterile. Time to card the Oscar shows too, even the constant pointing by scrumhalves to the refs must be stopped. Imagine FdP playing the ball instead of pointing like a traffic cop things to the ref. The worlds no 1 SH will become even better.

    Super

You are preaching to the choir mon ami – I think rucking should be brought back ! It would certainly make those naughty forwards think twice about laying all over the ball to slow the game down 😉

I am also dying to hear a ref say after some powder puff histrionics – “well, clearly you need a little time out. Go on, off you go & think about what you just did !” (I am picturing Kaplan cos he could carry it off). The alternative should be a fatty from the opposite team gets one free “shot” to make it a “worthwhile” penalty 😀

Yes, pointing out to be outlawed ! First of all poking your fingers about madly in the air kills angels !! Then again I refer you to my first point – if rucking was brought back I doubt much pointing would be required 😆
