Morné Steyn was named as the Vodacom Bulls’ Super 14 Player of the Year at a glamorous function in Irene on Monday night.
Steyn has had a dream season and his form in the Vodacom Super 14 tournament has been scintillating throughout the competition.

His goal kicking has been unmatched from the first to the last round, but let us not forget his superb tactical kicking and the way he has developed as an attacking flyhalf.

Steyn has shown on numerous occasions that he has the temperament to match his enormous talent and it has to be said that he is arguably the best defensive number 10 on the planet.

Steyn’s halfback partner, Fourie du Preez, received the award for the Best Backline Player and Pierre Spies was named as the Bulls’ Best Forward.

Like Steyn, Du Preez has had a super season and lots of people think he is one of the favourites to be named as the IRB Player of the Year. His tactical genius is worth gold to the team and his enthusiasm and passion to play for the Bulls is a massive motivational factor for everyone in the camp.

Spies showed during the course of the Super 14 that he is undoubtedly the best number 8 in the world and week after week he managed deliver one terrific performance after the other.

With ball in hand he has showed that he is unmatched as a ball carrier and it was great to see how hard he has worked on his all round game.

Awards:

Vodacom Bulls Player of the Year: Morné Steyn

Vodacom Bulls Forward Player of the Year: Pierre Spies

Vodacom Bulls Backline Player of the Year: Fourie du Preez

  • 4

  • 5

    @K9-MonsterLeeu

    Steyn is our best FLYHALF K9. Just admit it…hehe

  • 6

    @Supa Die Bloubul – Good morning Supa, i refused to watch that my nerves were shot and tried to leave the room but was held down so kept my eyes closed and only saw the replay afterwards.

  • 7

    4@K9-MonsterLeeu – gedink jy gaan ‘n hartaanval kry.

  • 8

    Morning Supa,

    Look you know more about these things than me, but what exactly is a “defensive number 10” and who is Morne currently up against to justify the “arguably” tag.

    Lastly, in which areas do you think he should improve to be the undoubted king of defensive number 10s on the planet?

    @fender

    Morning Fender.
    Please read properly and you will see this comes off the Bulls website.
    Here is the link thebulls.co.za
    Go ask them about their writing. While you are there, take a look at some of the other great things the Bulls union has to offer. Im sure you will enjoy it there! Have fun!

  • 10

    #9 Supa, no I know its a cut and paste job, broer. I just thought that seeing that you put it here you might be able to explain the concept to me.

    Seems you’re as confused as I am….and I don’t blame you in the least. 😉

  • 11

    @fender

    Yes fender. We have a relationship with the Bulls union to use their articles verbatim. But seeing you have loads of question. Dont be shy! Go to the site and ask your questions. Maybe I will see you there?

  • 12

    @fender

    Soos ek “best defensive” loskakel verstaan is dit die loskakel wat se tackling efficiency die beste is. n Speler wat nie sommer opponente deur sy kanaal laat kom nie. Iemand wat baie goed verdedig. Meer kan ek ongelukkig nie vir jou verduidelik nie. Dis anyway moeilik as iemand nie wil verstaan nie fender.
    Maar soos ek se, hou op skaam wees en gaan vra die skrywer self wat was sy bedoeling met die artikel!

    #11 Supa

    I think you’re being over-sensitive, Supa.

    I’m not attacking you, broer – so relax. My comment is not aimed at you or the Bulls website for that matter. And no, I have no desire to go to the Bulls site. Rugby-talk is a much better site in my opinion.

    It just that the concept of “arguably the best defensive number 10” had me stumped, that’s all…

    @fender

    Not sensitive at all fender. You want answers which I understand, but why so shy? Go ask! We really dont mind if you visit the Bulls website, I do it all the time!
    But, I can only tell you how I interpret the writer’s article.
    Im glad I could answer your first question for you. Lets get to the second then.
    “arguably” means people might argue over it. Some might agree, others might disagree. Some might agree Steyn is the best defensive flyhalf (discussed in 12) and some might feel others are better defensively. Basically, its open to discussion or debate.
    And english is not even my first language! More questions?

  • 15

    13@fender

    Oh, I see, you are going again. Till next time fender.
    Groente!

  • 16

    Ai, Supa & Kitaartjie weer aanmekaar…. oi vei.

  • 17

    Well done Steyn. He deserved it.

  • 18

    #15 Supa, you can relax now – I’m back. 😉

    Dankie virrie Engelse les, broer, ma aangesien jy mos ‘n banneling is op daai Engelse eiland van jou het ek ook niks minner van jou verwaggie. (That was my best shot at Afrikaans – hope you could follow..)

    Actually, the point I’m trying to make is the same point K9 made earlier and that is that the unbridled enthusiasm and of the writer (and I know it’s not you, Supa – you’ll never say such contestable things) is actually getting in the way of the accuracy of the comments he makes.

    And that is also why I have no desire to visit the Bulls site. Here in the good ole RSA we call it freedom of assosiation. 😉

    #16 GBS

    Hehe, don’t worry GBS – I won’t make your job harder than it is!

    But you know our Supa does like to make the odd controversial statement from time to time – much like Luke does, now that I come to think of it. These youngsters darem…

  • 20

    So van Lukas gepraat. ek dink die mannetjie is n baie goeie akteur.

    Jy weet mos wat hul seg, Jy kry slegte verloorders en goeie akteurs.

    Daar is nie iets soos n goeie verloorder.

    #20 Pill

    Well, loosing is as part of the game as winning is. Both should be handled with grace.

    And grace does demand that you sluk your disappointment. I’m not sure that that constitutes acting. Victor handled the CC loss at the Shark tank very well last year and Moo the Hyena did a fantastic job after the S14 final at Loftus. He even spoke Afrikaans if I remember correctly…

    Actually, losing offers you more of a chance to show what stuff you’re made of than winning.

    Of hoe?

  • 22

    Yes his goal-kicking in the Super 14 was tremendous… Who are you kidding he was kicking around 74% of his goals in the Super 14. Remember the Crusaders clash in Christchurch who lost us the game with piss poor kicking? If you said that Morne Steyn have been in prolific form with the boot since the semi-final against the Crusaders until now I wouldn’t argue. His defense in the Currie Cup have been shocking to say the least.

    62% of his tackles made against Western Province, Griquas, and the Cheetahs. That’s simply not good enough. 75% of his tackles made against the B&I Lions, 78% of his tackles made in the Super 14. You call him the best defensive fly-half in world rugby… What a joke.

    Next thing you are going to claim is that Morne Steyn is arguably the best line-breaking fly-half in the world…

    He’s a good reliable player, but get your facts straight. Because you attempt more tackles in a team who plays a kick and chase rugby throughout a competition does that make you a better defensive fly-half than the guy who makes 20 less tackles at a higher percentage? He also missed some important tackles in the Super 14. Against the Brumbies he missed an important tackle on Cristian Lealiifano who scored the winning try.

    The ELVs have also made fly-half play considerably easier when it comes to tactical kicking.

    One thing I don’t understand is why no-one have gone out of their way to target him. We targeted Carter, Wilkinson, etc. with our big forwards. New Zealand have targeted guys like Pienaar, and O’Gara, etc. in the past. I’m surprised that there’s not always a big loose-forward to greet Morne Steyn when he gets the ball. I’d like to see a team push him to his limit so we can see how mentally tough he really is.

    Morne Steyn have had a brilliant year. But I’m not sold on all aspects of his game, and I’m not sold that he’ll be able to perform at this level next year as well. He’ll have to prove me wrong.

  • 23

    # 22 Van, please don’t pik on Supa – he didn’t write the article. Its not Supa’s fault that it appeared on the Bulls site….

  • 24

    23@fender
    Sorry Supa. That Bloody Bulls website = PRAVDA.

  • 25

    @vanStraaten – well said. he is so far from an all-round flyhalf as Werner Kruger is from making the bok team. Excellent kicker…but thats it.

  • 26

    Kyk die leader op New24 se webblad

    WP happy with progress

    WP’s 2009 rugby season came to a spectacular halt when all three of its teams vying for glory landed on the also-rans scrapheap.

  • 27

    18@fender

    I think you are right. Why dont you write us a article fender? How about it?

  • 28

    22@vanStraaten

    Van Straaten. Its off the Bulls website. I thought you wouldve known as you are there often. Anyway, you rate BURTON FRANCIS as the BEST flyhalf in SA and BETTER than Carter and Hernandez, so forgive me if I dont take you serious when it comes to flyhalves.

  • 29

    28@Supa Die Bloubul
    He is the fly-half with the most potential. He didn’t live up to his potential this season because he didn’t have enough game time. Francis have all the attributes to become an all round world class fly-half. He needs some more time to refine his skills but the fact is the basics is there already. I never said that he is better than Carter but I said that he has the potential to be better (Mainly he can add the ability to be a lethal field goal kicker to the Carter repetiore if he ever evolves that far). I would always rate him above Hernandez. Hernandez remains a headless chicken who goes for a drop-goal when he doesn’t know what to do, or kicks an up and under. Hernandez like Morne Steyn is a weak defender. The best defensive fly-halves in the Currie Cup and there aren’t a lot of them is Monty Dumond, and Francois Brummer.

    I haven’t been to the Bulls website in ages, so that’s why I didn’t know. In any case I think I did apologize.

    South Africa over coach our fly-halves and backline players. We have coaches to help our players with decision making… Decision making in any sport is something that should come natural. I honestly believe the best of players are born with that ability to make the right decisions most of the time on the field.

    @Supa Die Bloubul
    Supa I’ve watched you guys throughout the Currie Cup (Note the spelling of Currie Cup (and I know I make spelling and grammatical errors), it’s not Curry like Curry and Rice) and I’ve seen how fickle you are week after week. Your opinions on both young fly-halves were undulating like a Sine wave. I’m glad Burton is going to the Lions he will serve them well.
