From Official WP Site

As senior professional coach, within the bounds of WP Rugby policy, as determined by the President and Executive Committee and the Chairman and the Board, I am responsible for on-field success of our teams. Core to success is our ability to identify, develop and nurture talent to ensure we have a pool of athletes capable of achieving success. Equally, where we are thin or in need of experience or specific skills, to identify and buy in that requirement with the approval of WP Rugby. I am very pleased to be able to say that the structures now in place at WP, from the Toyota School of Excellence (that identifies and prepares elite squads at U12, U15 and U17 age group levels for participation in relevant national rugby weeks), through our Institute in Stellenbosch and our junior U19 and U21 teams, are excellent. The results of all of these teams speak for themselves. (All junior WP teams went to the finals of their respective national weeks, with two winning, the WP U19 team is unbeaten, the U21´s are 3rd on the log with a game in hand and the senior team is in the running for a home semi.)

At junior levels we have a large pool of talent and the trick is to identify and pull through the best to ensure that at a senior level we have contracted the best players that we truly believe are going to make it. A huge amount of work and effort goes into this by many committed people and the results simply don´t lie. The simple reality is that we cannot offer everyone we develop contracts and it is not fair to keep players and not play them simply for the sake of keeping them away from other provinces.

 What is important in terms of home grown talent, is to spot and endeavour to retain the best (Juan de Jongh, JC Kritzinger, De Kock Steenkamp, Martin Muller, Dewaldt Duvenhage, and JJ Engelbrecht are all youngsters currently getting exposure at senior levels). Some athletes will inevitably slip through the net and some, like Francois Hougaard for instance, despite serious efforts, one is simply unable to retain.

In fact, we will actively look to develop players by allowing them to sign short term agreements with smaller unions, for example Boland and Griquas, where they can get game time they need to develop. This often with a signed agreement that should the player succeed, WP has an option on the player after that period. This whilst all the time endeavouring to ensure we have contracted the two best senior and a junior player available to us in each position.

On occasion, at senior team level, we will look to foreigners to provide mentoring roles to young athletes, to bring new ideas and insights and to fill gaps where we have an obvious and immediate need. Chris Jack and Tony Brown are great examples of athletes who benefitted the team and our young athletes enormously. In addition, we like all other professional sporting teams, will look to buy in star athletes ( Bryan Habana is an example at senior level and the SA U20 flyhalf Lionel Cronje another at junior level) , experience (Frikkie Welsh) or specific players for specific needs (Matt To´omua).

I remain cognisant of the passion, history and unique culture of rugby in this great province and, like any senior professional coach, I am striving to ensure that my tenure here results in professional, positive, winning teams that all are proud of. Balance and perspective remain crucial.

    How many CC and s14 trophies Rassie?

  • 2

    So the optionsfor upcoming players are play for Boland and get smashed every week or go to the Sharks or Bulls?

    I know where I would go.

  • 3

    Some of Rassie’s signings make sense for example Mossie and Habana are great players and maybe even Jack has taught the youngsters a few things.
    But Toomua for 4 or 5 weeks, or AJ or Lobberts etc doesnt make sense to me.
    I read WP are offering Mossie close to R4million and Habana get R3 million. Wynand were offered more than R2million and then there are Toomua, Jack, Vermeulen, Ricky, Mujati, Welsh etc.
    Does anyone have inside info on how much Rassie has to spend on players?

    Good statement Rassie.

    You will never please your cynical enemies, but it is not your job to please them. Do what’s good for WP rugby and ignore the noise

  • 5

    @Supa Die Bloubul – what you speak…we just got cc coach of the month :evilgrin:

  • 6

    @Martin

    Do you get a trophy for that? 😆

    Kyk hoeveel gebore Kapenaars is in die Wp span. Kyk hoeveel gebore Transvalers in die Bulle span. 24 van die bulle se gekontrakteerde spelers kom uit ander provinsies. Wat is die boodskap wat aan hulle skool laaties gaan? Wp het net te veel talent, magtag, hulle kan nie almal behou nie, dit sal hulle bankrot maak. Plus ek wil net weet as Namibiers vir n span speel, tel hulle ook as buitelanders, net soos die ander?

  • 8

    @WitenBlou – 🙂

    Moet nou tog nie die mense se plesier bederf met feite nie!

    Jy weet mos nou al dat ander reels geld vir die WP. 🙂

  • 9

    Pa: “ek hoop jy’t hom darem goed gebliksem?”
    Seun: “ek kon nie, pa”
    Pa: “hoekom nie?”
    Seun: “hy’s dan soooooooooo cute!!” :nerd:

    Shame poor Rassie, at FS people sympathised because he was at a union that lacked funds and depth. At Stormers he is castigated for his signings. The poor man can’t win.

    7@WitenBlou

    Ja, jy is reg, die Bulle het baie spelers wat nie in ons provinsie gebore is nie. Maar moenie dink dis anders by WP nie. Ek het vinnig op WP se webwerf gaan kyk. Hulle webwerf is nie heeltemal geupdate nie maar daar is 26 WP spelers wat nie in die Wes-Kaap gebore is nie. So dit gebeur nie net in Pta nie.
    Spelers gaan rondbeweeg vanaf geboorte, deur hoerskool en ook in die proffesionele era. Ons moet dit aanvaar. Dis nie altyd lekker nie en party aankope is vrotter as ander, maar dis verseker nie net die Bulle wat spelers van anders provinsies het nie!

    @Supa Die Bloubul – what??????…no trophy…ag nee man 😥 😥

    Ek dink net ons moet heeltemal wegbeweeg van hierdie onderwerp. Want baie ouens is gebore op een plek en word groot op n ander. Ek was saam met Schalk Brits op Laerskool en het saam met hom gespeel o/13 vir Park. Hy was van sub a in Park en is hoerskool na Stellenbosh toe. Maar sy geboorte plek se Empangeni dink ek. Blykbaar was hulle da met vakansie. Wat my eintlik pla is dat sommige moun oor die buitelandse spelers wat ons koop. Dan vra ek, tel Namibiers ook as buite landers?

  • 21

    @WitenBlou – 20

    As hy ‘n paspoort nodig het om die land in te kom en ‘n werkspermit nodig het, reken ek hy is ‘n buitelander, ongeag van watter land af hy kom

  • 22

Wanneer meet jy regtig of n ou van n ander provinsie af kom of nie? Jyt hierbo na die Bulle verwys wat min spelers het wat in hulle provinsie gebore is, so wou jou net wys, dis oral van pas, by WP ook.
    Oor jou vraag oor Namibiers ens. As n ou SA burgerskap het kwalifiseer hy seker as n Saffa?

  • 24

    rassie jou donnerse hanskakie

  • 25

  • 29

    @K9-MonsterLeeu
    Dink die “ons” is almal wat by hom gebraai het gisteraand. Hy het glo n groot party gehad! M.a.w. hy praat van hom en Ex player. hehe

  • 30
