With the Lions making an announcement soon of who the new GLRU Director of coaching will be, more and more rumours and sites are reporting that Bok assistant coach Dick Muir, is the favourite to take over the position from Hans Coetzee.

A Couple of names are being mentioned, such as Heyneke Meyer, Rudy Joubert, Eddie Jones and Allistair Coetzee. But one starts to get the feeling, if the rumours are to be believed, that Dick Muir is the one to try and get the Lions back to one of the top provincial sides in the country.

There is no doubt about Muir’s coaching ability. He took over a struggling Sharks side from Kevin Putt in difficult circumstances, and within a couple of months, got the Sharks back to an impressive and competitive unit. He’s also played a huge part in the Springboks recent success.

The one question that should be asked if Muir is to get the job, is would he be able to juggle the job with the Lions and his role in the Springbok set-up, without neglecting either of them? For instance, the Lions will start their preparations for Super 14 2010 in November, but this is the same time that Muir will be overseas with the Springbok squad touring Europe. How will the Lions be able to prepare without their head coach present?

This would also mean that the Lions would have to have a second coach for the Currie Cup season, as Muir will once again be involved in the Springbok set-up. I personally have a huge problem with having two different coaches for the Super 14 and Currie Cup competitions. Continuity is a huge contributor to success, and with this plan of action, there will be no continuity whatsoever throughout the season.

Do I believe that he has the skills and ability to take the Lions back to the top? Yes, but only if the Lions are his main and only priority. Muir has to either resign from the Springbok set-up, which is highly unlikely, or the Lions should appoint Heyneke Meyer. The latter is my first choice for coach, and with his results and achievements, he should be the favourite by miles.

If Muir is appointed, and still involved within the Springbok squad, then the question must be asked if this decision is in the best interest of the GLRU.

This is all off-course ,speculation, and all will be known only once the GLRU make the announcement of who the coach will be. The announcement is expected by Friday, and hopefully the correct candidate gets the job for the correct reasons.

    Take time and choose correctly, as this appointment is crucial to the Lions future success.

    Thought it was going to be H. Meyer.

    If Muir does get the job there will have to be two coaches like they have at WP. Muir will have his hands full that is for sure.

    HM would be the peoples choice, RJ the poephols choice.

    So there are three favourites now: Meyer, Coetzee and Muir.

    A 3 course meal?

    Seriously, it will be great to have another S14 team which can compete seriously, home and away. Muir has the knowledge.

    Gold’s two jobs did not have a negative impact on the Springboks.

    Got told by a reliable guy it will be Meyer, not Muir.

    @Morné

    @Morné

    Deal.

    He’s the only guy IMO that can rebuild the union from top to bottom.

    Just don’t know how he’s gonna deal with Jake IF WW stay involved.

    Hulle sal stupid wees as hulle vir Muir vat. Dis net te veel werk vir een mens. As ‘n blou bul gaan ek lang trane huil as dit Heyneke is. Maar mens kan nie so goeie coach op die kantlyn laat sit nie, hy moet coach anders word sy talente gemors. So laat Heyneke nou maar die leeus gaan afrig.

    Toe Dick Muir vir Pirates oorgevat het, het hulle ook mos hulle koppie vir die eerste keer in jare gewen, of so iets, eks nie seker van my feite daar nie.

    Maar die punt is Dick Muir kan spanne uit die ashoop haal. En as mens kyk na die spelers wat hy Natal toe laat gaan het in sy tyd, sal die Deysels en Kocketts nie weer deur hulle vingers glip nie.

    Hosh. It has to be Meyer. At the moment I’m not so worried about the S14/Bok commitments. Gold does it, and that seems to work…

    BUT… what about the Super 15? If memory serves me right, won’t that be held before and after the Autumn tours? That will imply that Muir will have to coach the Lions, go to the Boks, then go back to the Lions, then go to the Boks again, maybe help out at the end of the CC, then go back to the Boks.

    Am I wrong?

    Maybe someone can enlighten me here. Whilst I know Mr Muir had success as a club coach, and when at the KZN Union he started to turn them around, but did he ever actually WIN anything with them?

    Help Anyone?
