Cape Town

Vodacom Western Province coach Allister Coetzee and Vodacom Free State Cheetahs winger Lionel Mapoe were on Wednesday named Absa Coach and Player of the Month for September.

Coetzee has coached a WP team with few individual stars to within one point of the top of the CC log and good momentum approaching the knockout stages of the competition.

The pleasing aspect of the 2009 WP model, is that they have added significant grunt under the bonnet and that the additional torque was remarkably effective in tight five off road conditions against the traditional power houses of the Bulls and Sharks. The 2009 model also boasts nippy performance at higher revolutions, with excellent stability through tight corners. The dual de Jongh and Pietersen fuel injection system has boosted acceleration considerably, giving chief WP CC engineer Coetzee a very solid and balanced base for further development.

Cheetahs speedster Lionel Mapoe has been a revelation this season. He has created havoc with his acceleration from zero to blur against most opposition. Mapoe and Juries are cutting defenses to ribbons with high octane performances in a Cheetah team that seems to be re-energized after a six game undefeated run before losing to the Sharks and suffering an unfortunate loss to the Bulls at Loftus.

There were many players in the running for the Absa Currie Cup Player of the Month award. However Mapoe’s impact on the field for the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs this month ensured that he walked away with the grand prize for the month of September.

What is the importance of these awards?
It’s an opinionated, immeasurable waste of time.
    Says nothing really.

Well i don’t know about the cheetahs being undefeated since the early part of the season. They have just lost two in a row.

It is widely used and constructive practice in all spheres of business and in life in general, to recognize even minor achievements through reward. Please note that, as was the case with coaches who were similarly rewarded earlier this season, Allister Coetzee did not receive a CC; he was only voted as coach of the month for September.

Awards of this nature will always be viewed with a measure of subjectivity, but even the most ardent critics of WP should agree that there was a substantial improvement in the areas that were problematic only a few moths ago i.e. tight forward play and penetration at the back.
