After initially indicating that the Springboks would not call on replacements from SA, following the injury of Andries Bekker and J P Pietersen, Bokke management has decided to call on Johan Muller to strenghten the Bokke squad for their remaining two matches on the Tri-Nations Tour.
With Danie Rossouw having had injury worries and with slight niggles to the knees of Bakkies Botha, it makes sense to call on a decent lock as cover down under. Questions must be asked however whether Johan Muller was the suitable candidate for the job.
Johan has ample Bokke experience but David de Villiers or Anton van Zyl might have proven better choices, whilst at the same time getting them used to the Bokke setup.

Nou wonder ek wat die Bokke se ‘mindset’ gaan wees vir saterdag se wedstryd. Natuurlik om te wen, want ons kort nog daardie een bonuspunt, maar die beste manier om hom te kry, is om bloot te wen. Maar, gaan ons weer aanvallend speel of meer van skoppe gebruik maak.
Dit was in Brisbane gewees waar ons daardie groot pakslae gekry het (49-0). Dalk is dit tyd om dit uit te wis ?

@grootblousmile – 330 To be truthful it’s difficult to tell these days. Front row play has changed so much. In the old days one could engage early, which allowed you to burrow into your opponent & apply your technique to overcome him. But today with the crouch, touch, pause & engage that advantage seems to be lost. Plus changing to a 3-4-1 formation from the old 3-2-3 formation puts more pressure on the props. Probably also eliminates the chance to win a tight head because the #3’s legs are not so free.
The net result of all this is the frequent collapsing of scrums & resets. Front row play has become more of a hit/miss affair. If your body angle is not just right & the locks/flankers are not properly controlling their push then any prop can go down. Consequently the performance of an individual prop can vary from game to game. I think the IRB needs to rethink scrummaging & put the individual skills back into the game. It would also serve to make scummaging more unpredictable, i.e. more heels against the head.

@bdb – Ek hoor jou, maar ek dink ons gee te veel manne n game. Ons moes meer n kern gebou het , maar dan weer daar is nog baie water wat in die see moet loop. Ons is tans net 3 liga punte agter die voorlopers, en ons het 3 games wat maklik vir ons 15 punte kan gee, dan het ons dalk net een ander wen en n bonuspuntjie nodig.
