The Vodacom Blue Bulls are back in the hunt for the Absa Currie Cup thanks to their 72-16 victory of the Boland Cavaliers on a beautiful spring day in Wellington on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Bulls, who played in front of hordes of their fanatic supporters and scored 50 unanswered points in the second half, started off with some solid work in the scrums and lineouts and what was particularly impressive was they way that they have pounded the Cavaliers with their rolling mauls.

Thanks to their splendid start the Bulls camped in the Boland’s half in the first couple of minutes and it wasn’t long before John Mametsa score the first try after Heini Adams has taken a quick tap penalty.

In the 15th minute Mametsa’s partner on the wing, Gerhard van den Heever, finished off great work on his inside by Wynand Olivier, Zane Kirchner, Burton Francis and Heini Adams and at this stage the Bulls were playing the home side off the park.

Dewald Potgieter and his team mates were strutting their stuff with a lot of energy, commitment and enthusiasm and before they have reached the half hour mark centre Francois Hougaard scored his team’s third try thanks to a scintillating break by Olivier.

Olivier was as sharp as ever and after a couple of weeks on the sideline he showed that he is the perfect replacement in the national team for Jean de Villiers, who has departed for Ireland.

The Boland stayed within reach of the raging Bulls via three penalties by Danie Gerber’s son, Dandré and in the 35th minute they were suddenly close on the Bulls’ heels when lock Nico Esterhuyse dived over for his team’s first try.

Gerber converted and with Francis slotting a penalty after the siren has sounded the Blue Bulls were leading the Boland 22-16 at the break, but in the next 40 minutes the Bulls completely outplayed the Bulls.

The Bulls continued to chase the bonus point with some high pace, all out attacking rugby but unlike in the first 40 minutes Francis aimed for poles whenever his team received a kickable penalty.

Francis slotted his third penalty in the 46th minute and four minutes later Derick Kuün, who came on as a flank replacement, scored the Bulls’ bonus point try after another terrific rolling maul.

Kuün wasted no time to score his second in the 52nd minute and with the score at 37-16 coach Frans Ludeke decided to give a number of the substitutes game time. Francois Brummer replaced Francis at flyhalf, Hougaard move from centre to scrumhalf (with Marius Delport at outside centre) and due to Olivier’s ankle injury, Stefan Watermeyer played next to Delport in the midfield.

The Bulls did not lost a lot of momentum with most of the reserves on the park and in the 60th minute Kuün scored his hat-trick owing to another super rolling maul.

Tries by Gurthrö Steenkamp, Hougaard, Fudge Mabeta and Watermeyer followed in the last quarter and the end result was a stunning away victory for the Bulls where the forwards laid a solid foundation in the set pieces, with the backs striking whenever they had the chance.

For Ludeke and his team it was “mission accomplished” and now they will start focusing on next weekend’s crucial match at fort Loftus against the Free State Cheetahs.

    @Stan

    Ja, ek sien n paar van ons Bokke is volgende week ook nie beskikbaar nie. Ons moet daai een wen.

  • 14

  • 15

    Almal wat beskikbaar is sal volgende week speel.
    Wie is nie beskikbaar nie? Bakkies en die tandlose runaway Habana?

    @Supa Die Bloubul

  • 16

    @Stan

    Ja Bakkies en Habana en klink my FDP se skouer is nog beseer en dis ook nog nie 100% dat Pakslae en Vic gaan speel nie. Maar hopelik is almal reg behalwe Habana en Bakkies.

    Org Cronjé is currently the only father that has played for the Blue Bulls who has two sons who also represented the Union.
    Org is the father of Jacques and Geo Cronjé who both went on to play for South Africa after representing the Blue Bulls with distinction in the Currie Cup as well as the Super Rugby tournament and his two others sons, Werner and Johan, were also highly talented rugby players.

    Org set aside a few minutes to speak to bluebulls.co.za

    When did you play for Northern Transvaal?
    1975

    What position?
    Lock

    What was the highlight of your career?
    I would say our victory over the WP at Loftus in 1975. Province had a number of Springboks in their team, I think it was about eleven, and we managed to give them a proper hiding. The score was something like 25-13!

    For which club did you play in the Carlton League?
    Pretoria Police

    Which of your sons still play rugby?
    Jacques is playing in France (Paris) for Metro Racing after two seasons with Biarritz. That is the same club where Francois Steyn is going, but Geo had to retire due to an eye injury that he picked up whilst playing for the Lions.

    Nou op die lug by RSG is die konsertina klub vir die wat belangstel.

  • 26

    Sou dit nie makliker gewees het om net die link te plaas nie?
    Dan kan die res ook sien hoe lyk regte grugbyspelers.
    @superBul

  • 27

    Die konsertina is niks…
    Dis daai breindood advertensies… Hotel 224…sug.
    @Supa Die Bloubul

  • 28

    waars daai skelm moderator van ons?

  • 29

    @Stan@Supa Die Bloubul
    O, ok.
    Dan maak ons maar so, op RSG.
    Stan,
    Ek het klomp inligting opgespoor in Die Burger se argiwe oor Michael du plessis se skuif na Tvl
    Groot drama gewees gewees.
    Kyk Die Burger, 7 Maart 1987, bladsy 14, en wat Louis Luyt se rol was.

    Ook n drama rondom Michael met die eindstryd in 1989 teen NTvl, omdat hy nie op aandag wou staan tydens die speel van Die Stem nie (Die Burger, 3 Oktober, 1989).
    Sal bietjie later oor daai eindstryd meer gesels.

    O, en Pote Fourie het wel NTvl gespeel, Adri Geldenhuys ook.
    Johan Heunis was losskakel in die 1988 eindstryd, het jy dit geweet?

    Interessante leesstof daar in die argiewe.
