Sydney – Springbok loose forward Schalk Burger believes he might have cracked a rib in South Africa’s 32-29 Tri-Nations victory against the All Blacks in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Saturday.

Juan Smith, who is suffering from a lower back injury, failed a fitness test on the morning of the Test and Burger was drafted into the starting line-up as late replacement.

The loose trio of Pierre Spies, Heinrich Brüssow and Burger however combined well. Burger had just started to regain his form of old when he had to leave the field in the 68th minute with a suspected broken rib and was replaced by Ryan Kankowski on the side of the scrum.

“I think one of my ribs is broken. You can feel the bone sticking out here,” he said at Auckland airport before the team’s departure via Sydney for South Africa on Monday.

“At this stage I don’t know how serious it is. I will go to the Western Province High Performance centre in Bellville to ask the doctor to assess the extent of the injury.”

Burger has not played much rugby recently. He was suspended for eight weeks after he was found guilty of making reckless contact in the eye area Irish centre Luke Fitzgerald during the British and Irish Lions series.

Free Stater Heinrich Brüssow stepped into the team in Burger’s absence and grabbed his opportunity with both hands. As a result the fiery WP loose forward has struggled to regain his place in the Bok starting line-up.

“I would really have loved to be able to play in the Currie Cup for WP again, but now it seems that is not going to happen. I will have to wait to hear what the doctors have to say. I have already experienced a broken rib in the past and this injury feels the same to me,” said a disappointed Burger.

    WP ‘s stand out F Louw is a super replacement.

    Shame if Burger has a injury. Finally gets to play and gets injured. Just pleased that Boks have finished their Tri-Nations games and if he is injured can take a break and get better. Ribs don’t take that long to heal. WP will miss him though.

    GBS and Ed if you read this. Please try and put the threads on the bottom of the submit comment or to the side. Otherwise we have to go back to the home page to get into another thread.

    I know I am being a pain in the butt, you both have done a great job on this blog, but that will just make it a little faster to get to the threads.

    Thanks.

  • 11

    2@Loosehead

    Yes, he has been playing well, but he is no Schalk! Luke should be glad Schalk is not returning…

    @Supa Die Bloubul – 10

    Wish boet, wish. On a health diet and only drinking water and coffee and decaf coffee. Just ate and had too much of a party with my Scots visitors here for 5 weeks.

    Maybe too much water 😆 making my head do the ‘deurmekaar’ thing 😀

    @Supa Die Bloubul – Do you follow the GP? I just had 1/2 an eye on the Saracens / Northampton game. Joubert, Brits, De Kock, Wikus, Barritt and Liefling did well for Sarries. Mujati came on for Saints in the 2nd 1/2.

    Whats the weather like in England Supa? Must be getting colder now and those lovely long summer nights must be getting shorter now.

    Our summer is here for sure. Saw it was 32 in Pretoria today. Here in Durbs it was 26 and the humidity is picking up.

  • 15

    @Puma – I hope that the Tjarks are on next Saturday as deurmekaar as you are today. 😉

  • 16

    @Puma – Crap weather in CT, but at least we have the mountain.

  • 17

    @Loosehead – 😆 Then Cheetahs will win…hahaha. Think we should have some of our Boks back. Going to be a great game. Cheetahs played well against WP. You know that Cheetahs too are our bogey team. So hoping we win.

    Weather lovely here today in Umhlanga. Full sun and not too much wind. The humidity is picking up a bit at night. Really don’t enjoy the humidity but love our winter months here.

    Yip, Cape will have the mountain bad weather or good its always there the magnificent beauty. Really love Cape Town’s beauty only don’t enjoy the weather you folks get there in the winter months. Summer is brilliant in the Cape.

    Weather is still nice Puma. Kortbroek weather still, but we probably only have about a month left.

  • 21

    So WP only has Ricky Mechanic returning? He should make a huge impact, especially at scrumtime. 😆

  • 22

    @Supa Die Bloubul – 20

    Good to hear that the weather is still nice over there.

    Have you done some travel over there? Spain, France, Holland? Some nice places on your doorstep there. Especially this time of year.

    Oh yes, its great to be a Shark supporter….hahaha.

    Now really hoping the Bulls make it to the final and hope its at the tank. NOTHING better than a Sharks/Bulls final.
    Almost as good as watching the Boks/Abs game.

  • 27

    @Puma – yup would be a great final

    hopefully both sides have no injuries

  • 28

    @sharky_forever – Wen eers sat die cheetahs chom ek kry die gevoel ons gaan weer n s14 op julle trek lol

  • 29

    @sharky_forever – 27

    That is the fear from here on. So much rugga has been played by both teams. Not only in the CC but both have had many in the Boks squad.

    We will miss JPP but Mvovo is playing some nice rugby.

  • 30

    @smallies72 – Smallies you a Cheetah supporter? Well you know your team is our bogey team. Just think with our Boks back we should do it. Not sure who is coming in from the front row. Don’t think Smitty will play think he will be rested. Sharky will know more who will play. Maybe Beast and Bissie could play this week and rest the following.
