The Springboks completed a 2009 Tri-Nations WHITE-WASH over the All Blacks and claimed the Tri-Nations title for 2009 by beating their rivals 32 / 29 in a thrilling match which went right to the wire.

The All Blacks clearly showed their intentions early on that they wanted to run the ball at the Bokke and initially they had good field position.

Frans Steyn kicked a monster penalty, from his own 10m line to open the scoring, then added another huge one. He later added a third monster penalty conversion.

Dan Carter pulled the score back repeatedly converting some dodgy penalties into points.

Morne Steyn was equally on song with the boot, calmly slotting a drop goal, 2 penalties and 2 conversions… for his 100% kicking record for the day.

The Springboks scored 2 tries, one through Fourie du Preez, the undoubted BEST RUGBY PLAYER IN THE WORLD, and an intercept try by Jean De Villiers.

The All Blacks also scored 2 tries, one through Sivivatu and one through captain Richie MacCaw.

The game was won up front again, with the Springboks reigning supreme in the line-outs and getting parity in the scrums (with the Bokke absolutely monstering one All Black scrum).

On the deck, the combination between Schalk Burger and Heinrich Brussouw worked almost flawlessly, one complimenting the other.

At the back of the scrum, Pierre Spies had mixed fortunes… battling to pick up ball behind the scrum but putting in some very special tackles.

At the half time break, the Springboks were up 22 / 12.

In the second half the All Blacks gave their all, clawing their way back slowly but surely and when they scored through MacCaw with a couple of minutes to go, it was nail biting stuff.

They nearly scored with time up, but the Springboks held fast to record en epic win.

When Schalk Burger went off injured and Bakkies was subbed, one could again see that it affected the Bokke. In comparison, the All Blacks subs provided more impetus to their game.

The Bokke coaching staff replaced Fourie Du Preez with Ricky Januarie, near the end and also brought on Adi Jacobs, Jannie du Plessis and Chilliboy Ralapele.

It was like ice in the Bokke boots, our hearts in our throats, when these needless substitutions were made and ultimately nearly cost the Springboks the game.

When will the Bokke management ever learn that you do not HAVE TO make substitutions for the sake of substitutions. Why fix something that is NOT BROKEN ?

With this important win, the Bokke took the Freedom Cup and the Tri-Nations trophies.

Next week we see the All Blacks take on the Wallabies in the last Tri-Nations match of 2009,it having been reduced to a dead rubber, with the only thing at stake to see who ends SECOND and who ends LAST in ths year’s Tri-Nations.

Well done Bokke !

    @Puma – 504
Heard some interesting thoughts on that, it all come down to blooding new young fresh players into this winning squad. We cant expect to win a tournament where you play 7 games in a row with only old guys. Remember in 2007 we had Frans at 20 years , Wynand at 21 and so you can go on and on , we really had a young team.

  • 515

    @smallies72 – 513

Yes you are right there. Jeez some have been together for a long, long time. Read a nice article yesterday about Bakkies saying John Smit and him will be friends for life. They must get on like brothers. I know Bakkies and Victor will be mates for life too.

  • 516

    @superBul – 514

Yes agree we do need the experience with the young. Frans will only be 24 at the next world cup if he had stayed here. Brussow think he is quite young too.

Most will be under 30 if kept together until then. Only Victor, John and Bakkies will be 30 or over. Think Victor will be 34, John 33 and Bakkies 30 or 31. So this is still a young team mixed with some older ones. A good mix.

Okay out of here now super going to have lunch. Back later.

Save this and enjoy it over and over , we are the Champions.

Time up on the clock, and the All Blacks are throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the Boks. SA have made a host of replacements, they have fresh legs on the pitch but NZ are running circles around anything that moves. Carter puts in a chip for Rokocoko, who takes it in well and motors down the touchline. Inside ball to Kieran Read who continues the momentum. This is tense, the crowd are on their feet! They can sense a last-minute victory. Last throw of the dice now for the home side as Carter goes cross field with a kick for Corey Jane… but he’s taken out into touch. That’s it folks, the whistle is blown and South Africa are the new Tri-Nations champions! What a game. The All Blacks will be gutted, but still have to pick themselves up for the last fixture of the tournament against Australia in Wellington. We hope to catch you then! Cheers for now.
78 The All Blacks are just 5m out now, Corey Jane was held up inches short. But the ABs get it back, Carter puts in a cross kick for Richie McCaw who simply has to catch it and put the ball down. He does just that! Try to New Zealand! Carter makes the conversion… this game is still anybodys folks!!!
76 Ryan Kankowski is on the field and has also made a telling impact as he sets off down the left-hand touchline. The Bok forwards try to get a maul going and run down the clock, but the All Blacks have stolen it. Through the hands it goes and again it’s the Boks who have to defend for their lives!
74 Morne Steyn wil want to make this count and take the All Blacks out of range – they’ll need to score twice if this goes over. It’s through! SA take one step closer to their Tri-Nations crown! 22-32
72 Carter can’t find touch, and Frans Steyn will run it back. He puts ball to boot, and again the South Africans give chase. Carter is under it, and tries to outrun Piere Spies but gets dragged down by his collar. Two Boks pounce on the All Black star and he struggles to release, which means another penalty to SA in kickable range.
70 Ruck formed close to the touchline now, and it’s the Boks in possession. A box kick from Du Preez will see Habana give chance. Rokocoko takes, but doesn’t call a mark. He’s taken out, but not in touch. Cowan back to clear, but his kick is charged down by Bismarck du Plessis! The All Blacks scramble back now and escape thanks to a penalty against the Boks for playing the ball off their feet.
68 Carter steps up, slots over the penalty – his fifth of the match – and closes the gap to just seven points! Game on! 22-29
66 Isaia Toeava has made a big difference since he came on for Donald. He passes inside to Rokocoko who again breaks the line… he’s so dangerous to stop in full flight. Ball lost though, Habana cleans up, but is stranded. Penalty to NZ, and this time they WILL go for posts.
64 What’s this? The All Blacks turn down a certain three points and opt for a scrum instead which actually goes against them after Owen Franks is blown up for standing up after the ball was put in. There is still plenty of time left in this match, why not take the points on offer?
60 Carter has been spot on so far with his attempts at goal. Again, the ball sails over! The All Blacks are right back in this match. Can the Boks hold on, or is there a potential fightback on the cards? It’s tense out there! 19-29
58 It ain’t over until the fat lady sings! The All Blacks strike back in deadly fashion as Ma’a Nonu again slices through the Bok midfield. Replacement Isaia Toeava is in support and takes the ball in at pace before offloading to Sivivatu for a fantastic touchdown in the corner. Wow, that’s more like it from the All Blacks!
56 Morne Steyn adds the conversion from bang in front… he’s missed from that position before but makes sure of it this time! SA take a comfortable lead now. 12-29
54 NZ will have another throw-in at the line-out, lets see if Hore can get it right this time. He does, as Ross taps down to Cowan who in turn feeds his backline. Donald throws a pass to Nonu, but Jean De Villiers intercepts! He’s away and cruising home… nobody is going to stop the centre touching down for an opportunist try under the sticks. Wow, could that be game, set and match?
50 Jimmy Cowan puts in and has a dart blind where he offloads to Rokocoko. The Rocketman can’t take off though as Habana puts in a big hit. Brad Thorn manages to keep the ball alive, but John Smit follows Habana’s lead with a monster tackle on the lock that sees the big man take three steps backwards. CRUNCH!
48 A decent attacking opportunity for SA is lost as Pierre Spies knocks on when picking up from the base of the scrum. That was a schoolboy error!
46 New Zealand’s woes in the line-out continues, Hore throwing skew. It gives SA a scrum. Morne Steyn puts in a neat grubber, but Nonu is on it like a flash and breaks free. Jean de Villiers puts in a big hit, disloding the ball from his opposite number. Odwa Ndungane recovers and thumps the ball into no-man’s land. Stephen Donald is back for it, but throws a wild pass to Sivivatu who can’t hang on. Scrum to the Boks on the All Blacks 22.
44 South Africa manage to win the ball back, but a little knock-on will give the All Blacks a relieved scrum 5m out from their line. The hosts will breath a sigh of relief there, they survived a massive Bok onslaught three minutes into the second half as Carter clears his lines. NZ had to push hard to get that ball back for their pivot.
42 Welcome back folks as Morne Steyn gets the second half underway. Early on the All Blacks are under all sorts of pressure as Rokocoko can’t hang on, as Morne Steyn comes speeding past to latch on to his fumble. The Bok pivot throws a dummy, and then passes inside to Bismarck du Plessis who is dragged down inches short of the line – sooo close!
40 Late surge from the All Blacks now, as Andrew Hore charges at the line, his opposite number Bismark du Plessis stops him in his tracks though. But the ball is spread through the hands towards the right-hand touchline. The Boks defence has been stretched here – NZ would love to score on the stroke of half-time. The visitors tackling as if their lives depend on it, as Mils Muliana gets it on the touchline. He has no choice but to stab ahead. Sitiveni Sivivatu gives chase, but Frans Steyn is back to save the day for his team and dots down to bring up half-time. What a cracking first half we’ve had. Some dubious calls from the ref, but SA have their nose in front. Stick around for the second half folks!
36 Hore throws in, and the ref blows his wee whistle. Bakkies Botha has been penalised for bringing down Brad Thorn. Carter will have his fourth shot at goal here and one can’t see him missing… he’s proves us right as the flags go up – Carter’s boot keeping his team in the game. 12-22
34 Morne Steyn’s kick isn’t out, Mils Muliana takes it in and launches a big bomb towards the Bok back three. Frans Steyn takes cleanly but slices his return kick into touch. That was his first mistake of the match, lets see how costly though as NZ step up for the line-out 10m out from the Boks 22.
32 New Zealand caught napping as Fourie du Preez takes a quick throw-in. Down the line it goes, the ball hasn’t seen the likes of Habana or Ndungane yet in this game. Oh, but when it does, Ndungane puts it down. Maa Nonu recovers the loose ball, and sets off down the touchline! He’s dragged to the deck by Jean de Villiers though, support slow in coming for New Zealand and SA will win the penalty for Nonu holding on.
27 This is a real see-saw battle going on here folks! All Black lock Isaac Ross is the man penalised this time, not rolling away in the tackle. Frans Steyn will have another pot at goal here. The Bok full-back keeps his 100 per cent kicking record intact as the South Africans extend their lead once more. 9-19
23 Whatever SA throw at NZ, the home side will throw right back at them as Dan Carter lines up his third penalty attempt of the match. Schalk Burger blown up for offsides. It’s Carter’s toughest kick of the half, but once again, he strikes it straight and true. The All Blacks close the gap to seven points. 9-16
21 Morne Steyn lines up the tricky touchline conversion, but again, the ball is struck well and sails between the uprights. The Boks now hold a ten-point lead over their hosts. Can they keep this up? 6-16
19 Another throw by Andrew Hore is pinched, this time Victor Matfield does the business and taps down to Fourie du Preez who stabs the ball ahead. Oh my word, a nasty bounce of the pigskin allows big Bakkies Botha to pick up and charge his way towards the line. He’s pulled down inches short! Du Preez again, he has options to his left and right but goes on his own… it’s a try! The ref will go upstairs, but he only needs a second or two to confirm. The Boks extend their lead with a conversion to follow. You can hear a pin drop in the Waikato Stadium.
17 The Boks have had little possesion and territory to play with so far in this match. They playing off scraps, but Morne Steyn makes the most of it by putting in a cheeky drop to take his side back in the lead… the crowd remain silent. 6-9
14 Scrum down now and the hosts will have the feed. John Smit loses his footing, and the scrum collapses. Oh my word, the ref has awarded a penalty to NZ! Surely that is a reset? Apparently not. This will allow Carter to level the scores once more, again from bang in front. The All Black pivot makes no mistake! We are dead even here folks – it’s can’t get closer than this. 6-6
12 Carter gets us underway once more, Joe Rokocoko gives chase but his opposite number Bryan Habana is underneath it. Bang! The two wingers crash into one another as Habana hits the deck. Rokocoko made no attempt to pull out of his charge, but gets away with a warning only. The small amount of Bok supporters give the ref a piece of his mind, who is really having a shocker so far in this match.
9 The Bok full-back lines it up… he’s struck it sweetly once again and the flags are raised again too! He’s got his kicking boots on today, that’s for sure as the Boks take the lead. 3-6.
7 The All Blacks have their first throw-in at the line-out, but get it horribly wrong … Andrew Hore going long, and throws over the top of Kieran Read’s head. Richie McCaw manages to clear it up, but he is penalised for holding on. The Boks get a chance to take the lead here, it’s about 45m out but Frans Steyn won’t have any trouble with the distance.
5 The Boks dust themselves off and finally get awarded a penalty 60m out. There’s only one player on the pitch that can step up and attempt this one – and Frans Steyn does just that! The crowd can’t believe the young man is going for posts, but he silences the All Black supporters with a miraculous kick – wow, the flags go up. That was phenominal! Scores are level! 3-3
3 The Boks hit back hard though and make some hard yards up the middle through hard number eight Pierre Spies. Jaque Fourie now with ball in hand and looking dangerous. The men in green and gold are just five metres out now, but are blown up for holding on to the ball. It was Morne Steyn in possesion, and one feels he could feel hard done by from that second dubious decision from the Welsh referee.
1 Dan Carter gets us underway, and immediately it’s an early penalty to New Zealand! As Victor Matfield took the ball in, referee Nigel Owens penalises captain John Smit for blocking the incoming traffic. Carter has an easy first attempt here as he lines it up bang in front – over!!! First blood to the All Blacks. 3-0
0 Welcome to Waikato Stadium in Hamilton where the All Blacks take on the world champion Springboks for this Tri-Nations decider! South Africa stand on the brink of their first Tri-nations title since 2004, but New Zealand will do all they can to deny the visitors this feat. Can the All Blacks win by more than seven points and score four tries? Can the Springboks win? Can the Springboks score four tries? Can the Springboks be within seven points at the end of the match? The answer to all those questions is Yes…but which will it be? Where will Yes be? Stick around to find out!
0 There has been a late change to the Boks’ starting line-up: Juan Smith pulled out in the last minute and will be replaced by Schalk Burger, which means Ryan Kankowski will take his place on the bench.

Congrats Boks. True champions. Winning it in Hamilton on top of it all. Glad JdV is coming to Munster – man he can read a game well. Do you think the Boks will still use him or doesn’t he qualify to play for the boks now.

  • 524

523@Irish Devil – He certianly still qualifies BUT the current Bokke policy is that they will not utilise overseas players.

    Hello, by the way

  • 525

@grootblousmile – Hey GBS. I went mad today. My mates thouught I was nuts. The Boks were great. Agree with most silly replacements almost cost them again. I like that combination of Fourie and JdV too. Also thought Burger played a great game. Back to his best.

  • 526

    525@Irish Devil – Hint, hint… you are nuts… hehehe

Man, the fact that the Bokke is now becoming a home-and-away winning Team is just absolutely fabulous !

Cannot tell you how swolen-chested I am after our win today…

Now the Bulls must just also do it later today against the Sharks….

  • 527

Congrats Saffas on winning the 3N. It was a good game & for once no cards issued, as it should be. Du Preez is the glue that holds this team together. He is always a threat on offense & he always seems to be back fielding kicks. Better keep him wrapped up in cotton wool, should be banned from riding in cars, also someone needs to be employed as his food taster. 🙂

For the life of me I don’t understand why the ABs elected for scrum instead of the 3 pts late in the game. Then a few minutes later they elect to kick from a more difficult position. That first decision cost them a draw, not very professional IMO. I think the ABs made a mistake in starting Donald, he never looked as if he was ever going to break the line. Switching Carter & Donald back & forth disrupted their rhythm too.

But today was the Boks day, dominating the line outs as usual, holding their own in the scrums, maybe a tad off in the breakdowns, a solid, punishing defense & opportunistic (a la JDV, how infuriating to give up those kind of tries).

Savour your title my friends. And the whitewash. Wait until next year. 🙂

  • 528

@Puma – I would like to see that again. How can he not be offside? Can someone illuminate?

  • 529

I’m disappointed that Treehugger couldn’t be more objective about the reffing today, heh, heh 🙂

  • 530

Time to sign off. I’m in a foul mood tonight my ABs lost a nail biter. Better lock myself away or I might commit grievous bodily harm on someone. Then I might miss next week’s game. 🙂

  • 531

Congrats to the Boks & their Supporters 😀

I would have posted sooner but was away for the weekend … watched at a friends house & not in public thank goodness else I may have ended up in jail cos my language would have made an SAS Commando blush 😳

Oohh well, next year is a whole new comp & in the meantime ABs can regain some spirit by heading north & thumping some Poms 😆

Last word – Well done Boks on a deserved victory.
