In a truly magnanimous gesture, John Allan, chief executive of the Legends (former Springbok and Scottland hooker), confirmed that the South African Rugby Legends Association are dissatisfied with the manner in which the IRB acted against the Boks and will therefore pay the fines imposed on the Springboks by the International Rugby Board.
The IRB fined the Springboks and South African Rugby Union (SARU) about R220 000 for bringing the game into disrepute with an armband protest against Bakkies Botha’s ban in the third Test against the British and Irish Lions.
Every player was fined about R3 000, captain John Smit R13 000 and SARU R130 000.
The players and members of team management wore white armbands with the words “Justice 4” on their jerseys.
“We are here to safeguard rugby’s values and believe the IRB are targeting the Springboks,” said Allan.
“The Springboks are the best team in the world because they stick together and the IRB do not like it.”
Allan believes Botha was punished for something that did not warrant punishment.
He believes the IRB applies double standards. “Bakkies is punished, but Wallaby flyhalf Matt Giteau, who took Fourie du Preez (Bok scrumhalf) out, is not.”
The South African Rugby Legends Assosiation is doing marvelous work, not only getting old players together, but also doing monsterous work with the youth of South Africa. I don’t fully agree with the Legends paying the fines.
IMHO SA Rugby (PTY) LTD, as the employer of the Springbok players should pay the fines. Then again, I’m sure they’re too banana coloured to do anything that may upset the French Puppet and his cronies sitting in Dublin. (The IRB “old farts”.
5@Scrumdown – SARU often comes accross as soft-cocks who jump when anybody asks, whether it be the IRB or their Sanzar Partners.
Couple that with the way SARU handles a lot of internal issues and their recent history in handling Regional Issues like the Spears, and for that matter the whole Eastern Cape situation… and it is easy for the perception to take hold that they are baffoons, the whole lot of them.
The ineptitude of a system where the Presidents Council sways all influence and has all the say in rugby is SA Rugby’s biggest downfall at the moment.
I would rather have a Dictatorial system in place, like when Doc Craven ruled, or when Louis Luyt ruled the Lions Union, than have these lame-arsed soft-cocks ruling as is the case at present.
In line with that, somebody had to stand up for certain values (Bokke) and somebody has to stand up now and indicate to the IRB (Legends) that they were ineffective in metering out punishment !

Ja, dis eintlik ironies dat die s14 speler wat veronderstel is om uit te staan, dit nog nie doen nie. Selfs Stegmann is maar stil in vergelyking met die s14. Potgieter speel goed.

Hule sal dom wees om so te dink want hulle speel vir s14 plekke vir volgende jaar. Maar n ou soos Delport. Hy was n helse talent toe hy jonk was, maar hy kom net nie reg nie. En dis nie asof hy tussen swak spelers speel nie.

Hoop ons senters het hul hardloopskoene aan, nie skopskoene nie. Los die skopwerk vir die wat kan.

Ja, o/21 Sa juniors en Bulle was hy vir my goed. Ek onthou in een van sy eerste CC games toe druk hy drie driee. MAar die afgelope paar jaar is hy swak.
