Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder has taken a swipe at the SANZAR brains trust over their proposed Super Rugby innovations.
He called the proposed changes to the Super Rugby bonus point system “bizarre” and suggested there was a lack of consultation with franchises on the matter.
The SANZAR initiative, that is expected to formally unveiled early next week, also include a number of minor law variations for the 2016 Super Rugby season.
While some of the expected law innovations still require World Rugby approval, the biggest innovation – a change to the try-scoring bonus points – is what has caused the biggest stir.
The SANZAR change will see the bonus point awarded to teams who score 4 tries or more in a game scrapped and replaced by 1 for teams that score 3 tries more than their opponents.
Blackadder called the proposed change “bizarre” and queried the lack of consultation with franchises on the matter.
The mooted change, widely reported by media in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand on Thursday, is a copy of the system used in the French Top 14 league and aimed at keeping lopsided games alive for longer periods.
Blackadder, though, was hardly enthused by the move.
“It is a little bit bizarre,” he was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz website on Friday.
“It just means we have to score 3 tries more than anyone else. It will be really interesting when it comes to decisions.”
Blackadder, a former All Black captain who has coached the 7-times Super Rugby champion Crusaders since 2009, said he had not been consulted on the changes ahead of the new season which starts on 26 February.
“Honestly, no. We just got flicked an email,” the 44-year-old said.
“There hasn’t really been a lot of consulting, to be honest, which is disappointing. But it is what it is. Like anything we will ask our players to adapt and get on with it.”

Nice pics GBS, you must admit though, we know their rugby’s uber k*k but boy the beauty of the Cape is something else.
What are the thoughts on Varsity Cup rule changes especially tries worth different amounts? It mentions a 5, 7 and 9 point try depending on where play originated, although is before or after the conversion kick ie. how much is a conversion worth. If I am correct do they have 2 points for drop kicks and or penalties in Varsity Cup?

Will have to see, will be quite a chess board for the coaches when planning their strategy, teams might not play a territory game (kicking) but they may also not be very adventurous, so it might be wise to go with an all out counter attack gameplan.
Just imagine a scenario where team A is on attack on team B’s tryline, team A will get 8 points (5 for try and 3 for the conversion), if they lose the ball and team B intercepts or gathers a loose ball and runs the full length of the field they will get 10 points (7+3)… thats an 18 point swing!
This is not rugby and should not be labelled as such imo, to enforce these rules we might need 4 or 5 referees on the field as well, while they are at it, lets remove the scrum from varsity cup next year and just make it a free kick… that will encourage more running rugby too and “change our mindset”
