John Philip "Bakkies" Botha

John Philip “Bakkies” Botha

John Philip “Bakkies” Botha, born 22 September 1979 in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal has had a glittering international career that drew to a close on 22 November 2014.

He will continue to play for his French Club Toulon and has even hinted at retiring in South Africa with the Currie Cup.

In his professional career Botha has won everything there is to win.

With the Blue Bulls he won the Vodacom Cup in 2001 and then went on to add three Currie Cup titles to his name in 2002, 2004 and 2009.

With the Bulls in Super Rugby, Botha was part of the first South African team to lift the trophy in 2007 (in the professional era – with Transvaal winning the Super 10 in 1993), and then again in 2009 and 2010.

For the Springboks he has won the World Cup in 2007, the Tri-nations in 2004 and 2009 as well as a British and Irish Lions Series Trophy in 2009.

Botha has also picked up the Mandela Challenge plate in 2005 and 2009 against the Wallabies and the Freedom cup against the All Blacks in 2004 and 2009.

For Toulon, Botha won the European cup back-to-back in 2013 and 2014 as well as scooping the Top 14 League in 2014.

A true giant of the game in every sense, it is easy to smile when watching this clip…

    @ MacroBok:

Ek sal altwee ons verbeeldinglose crashball senters inruil vir ‘n Danie Gerber in sy prime

En al die S15 senters vir hom en Michael du Plessis saam

Hoe goed is Carel se seun by die Sharks, Jean-Luc du Plessis?

Is hy ‘n toekomstige Bok losskakel?

  • 17

    13 @ MacroBok:

@ Victoriabok: yip. And it brings tears to the eyes certainly. I watched this series. The Kiwi rebels were know as the NZ Cavaliers. Pretty decent side they were too.

  • 19

    @ Victoriabok:
ons sal al die senters in die land moet inruil vir Danie.

Ken nie die Du Plessis tweeling so goed nie.

Hehehe, Andy Dalton was their cappie, until my Cuzzie ended his tour in the 2nd game on tour… broke his jaw with a punch.

  • 22

@ grootblousmile: ja. Burger was a breker of note. Tell me you’re not a chip off the old block GB. One didn’t really want to make Burger de moer in intentionally. Ask Andy?

  • 23

@ MacroBok: both were outstanding for different reasons. Carel was the most famous because of his extreme skill on the wing but Michael was not far behind as a highly talented and creative centre. Then there was Willie and finally young Jacques. What a rugby family that was. Can’t see it happening again in a hurry.

  • 24

Then there is the new generation of players, probably the only bearable PW player Wink

    but what a player

Will always be compared to aplon because of his size, but overall better than the rest as well… looking forward to see what he can do in Super Rugby.

@ Victoriabok: en Schalk Jnr is nie langer n laaitjie nie. Hys nou a veteraan kan jy dit glo

    22 @ Tassies:
The Geldenhuys clan are all the same…

Think back on the Geldenhuys okes who played big rugby, Adri Geldenhuys (Springbok lock), cuzzie Burger Geldenhuys (Blue Bulls & Springbok openside flank), cuzzie Jan Geldenhuys or JP Geldenhuys as they called him (No 8 for WP)… moeilike klomp donners.

My dad was like that too when he was young… His cousins to this day still talk of how scared people were of the kaalkop Geldenhuys, who moerred first and asked questions afterwards on the rugby field.

We are fiery but very passionate.

I am not aggressive and take long to anger… till one farking day, when all hell breaks loose… hehehe

  • 27

    @ grootblousmile:

Ons het ‘n moerse span gehad in 1988-1991

Burger, Uli, Jan Lock, Adri Geldenhuys en Piet Pretorius

En moenie Robert du Preez weggooi nie, hy’t mos ‘n OP flank lights out geslaan
