The 2020/21 PRO Rugby season kicked off last night. The Champions, Leinster, have barely shaken off their hang-overs having lifted the PRO14 trophy for the 2019/20 season less than a month ago in Dublin.

Zebre hosted Cardiff Blues in the first match of the season. The Blues will return home with a victory under their belts. This in spite of a red card issued in the 43rd minute to their number 8 Josh Turnbull for what has been described in some quarters as a ‘Farrell-esque’ tackle on Zebre’s Maxime Mbanda. A reported 1000 spectators attended the match in the stadium which has a capacity of 5000.

There were wins for last seasons Finalists as Ulster eventually ran out as winners against Benetton in a match that was squared at 21 all at half time.

Winger Darcy Graham and flanker Magnus Bradbury return from injury as Edinburgh make 10 changes for Friday’s return match with Glasgow.

Edinburgh, who clinched a Pro14 home semi-final with last weekend’s 30-15 win, hand a first start to fly-half Nathan Chamberlain.

Glasgow make three alterations, with Huw Jones continuing at full-back.

George Horne replaces Ali Price at scrum-half, with Tom Gordon and Stafford McDowall also called up.

Rob Harley drops out as Gordon starts at openside, allowing Matt Fagerson to shift to number eight and Ryan Wilson to take the number six jersey.

Centre McDowall takes over from Peter Horne.

With a place in the last four against Ulster to plan for, Edinburgh coach Richard Cockerill gives Charlie Shiel a start at scrum-half and Jamie Hodgson replaces the injured Grant Gilchrist in the second-row.

Simon Berghan, Nick Haining, Pierre Schoeman, Mike Willemse and James Johnstone are the other men coming into the starting XV.

“We’ve got a good squad with plenty of depth, so it’s a great chance to blood some new players and give them some experience playing in a derby match,” said Cockerill, who has named three untested academy players on his bench.

“We’re also looking after our squad and some of those key guys who are important to the way we play. We want as full and as fit a compliment of players as we can going into the semi-final.”

Captain Fraser Brown will make his 100th Glasgow appearance at Murrayfield, with 700 spectators in attendance for Scotland’s first Covid-19 test event.

“We’ve got one eye on the start of the new season and we know that squad depth is going to be tested more than ever, so it’s another chance for us to look at certain players and combinations,” said head coach Danny Wilson.

“At the same time, though, it’s all about continuing to gel and grow as a squad, and we’re looking to build some momentum.”

Edinburgh: Kinghorn, Graham, Johnstone, Dean, Van der Merwe, Chamberlain, Shiel; Schoeman, Willemse, Berghan, Haining, Hodgson, Bradbury, Watson, Mata.

Replacements: McInally, Sutherland, Nell, Sykes, Crosbie, Frostwick, Van der Walt, Gordon.

Glasgow Warriors: Jones, Seymour, Grigg, McDowall, Tagive, Hastings, G Horne; Kebble, Brown, Z Fagerson, Gray, Cummings, Wilson, Gordon, M Fagerson.

Replacements: Turner, Chapps, Pieretto, Harley, Fusaro, Price, P Horne, Nairn.

The English Premiership started last weekend after a lengthy break due to restrictions imposed as a result of the Covid-19 virus. Domestic rugby competitions under the guise of ‘Super Rugby’ have been taking place in Australia and New Zealand. However the real rugby competition resumes tonight in Italy as Benetton and Zebre play the first of their two derby games in the re-jigged PRO14.

Clubs from 4 of the 5 nations taking part in the PRO14 will be in action this weekend, albeit in stadiums devoid of fans due to ongoing restrictions. When the South African teams, the Kings and the Cheetahs, play their next games remains a mystery. The PRO14 organizers will no doubt be pleased though that whether the Kings and Cheetahs play again this season or not it won’t make a difference to the knockout stages as neither team are in the running to get there. Had it still been possible for these teams to get to the Semi-Finals it could have posed a headache for the PRO14 with all the travel restrictions making it unlikely or very difficult for them to take part in knockout games.

Glasgow Warriors kicked off the New Year in the best possible fashion yesterday afternoon, running in six tries to claim a 38-19 win over Benetton in Treviso.

A brace from George Horne and a sterling defensive shift spearheaded the Warriors effort, as Dave Rennie’s men made sure all five points would be coming home with them from northern Italy.

Petrus du Plessis, tighthead and scrum coach, made his season debut coming off the bench and playing 35 minutes for the men from Scotstoun.

“This is a much-needed win for the squad,” said the 38-year-old.

“People would have counted us out because a few of our big names weren’t playing, but we believed in our squad and we did the job.”

Dave Rennie has confirmed he will leave his role as Glasgow Warriors Head Coach at the end of the season, to become the next Head Coach of Australia.

Rennie, who joined the Warriors in 2017 from Super Rugby side the Chiefs, guided his side to the Guinness PRO14 Final at Celtic Park and the quarter-finals of the Heineken Champions Cup last season.

The club came top of its Guinness PRO14 Conference in both the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons, securing a record number of bonus point wins last season in the process as his attacking, all-court style of play maintained the Warriors’ position as one of the top teams in the competition.

Glasgow Warriors continued to develop exciting young talent during his first two seasons with many going on to secure international honours with Scotland, demonstrated with the selection of 19 players in Gregor Townsend’s Rugby World Cup training squad this summer.

Glasgow Warriors head coach Dave Rennie has named an unchanged line-up for Saturday’s Pro14 final against holders Leinster at Celtic Park.

Callum Gibbins captains the side, while Stuart Hogg makes his final appearance before joining Exeter Chiefs.

Ireland duo Rob Kearney and Jonny Sexton and former Australia lock Scott Fardy come into the Leinster team.

Sexton skippers Leo Cullen’s side, having last started in the Champions Cup final defeat by Saracens.

Kearney’s place at full-back means Jordan Larmour moves to the wing, while Ross Byrne drops to the bench and Devin Toner, Dave Kearney and Sean O’Brien do not feature, with O’Brien expected to leave for London Irish this summer.

Warriors head coach Dave Rennie has urged “excitement machine” Hogg to concentrate on reproducing his recent form.

“We tried to put the brakes on him today – he went berserk yesterday at training,” Rennie said.

“He’s an excitement machine. He’s desperate to go out on a big note and all we need him to do is to play as well as he has in the last few weeks and hopefully it’s enough.”

Johnny Sexton starts on the bench as Pro14 champions Leinster defend their title in the semi-final on Saturday against Munster in Dublin.
Leinster make four changes from the Champions Cup final defeat by Saracens.

Ross Byrne, Dave Kearney, Rhys Ruddock and fit-again Josh van der Flier, in his first game since Ireland’s Six Nations win over France, all start.

Munster also make four changes from the quarter-final win over Benetton with Keith Earls and Joey Carbery included.

Van der Flier has not played for Leinster since January, after sustaining a groin injury while on Six Nations duty. There were doubts whether he would be available again this season and his return is a timely boost for club and country in a World Cup year.

He replaces Sean O’Brien in the back row with Rhys Ruddock, who will captain the team, coming in for Scott Fardy.

Glasgow head coach Dave Rennie has named his team to face Ulster in Friday night’s PRO14 semi-final at Scotstoun.

DTH van der Merwe returns to the Glasgow Warriors starting XV. The Canada international winger, who was ruled out for the remainder of the season following shoulder surgery in February, has recovered four weeks ahead of schedule.

The 33-year-old scored the dramatic winning try in Glasgow’s last league semi-final victory in 2015, also against Ulster at Scotstoun.

Club co-captain Callum Gibbins returns to lead the side having not played since suffering a head injury against Saracens in March.

Stuart Hogg will play his final game at Scostoun before joining English Premiership side Exeter Chiefs next season, he joins DTH in the backfield, along with fellow club centurion Tommy Seymour.

Sam Johnson and Kyle Steyn start in midfield for the fourth consecutive game while recent recipient of the Guinness PRO14 Young Player of the Season award, Adam Hastings starts at fly-half and Ali Price is once again named at scrum-half.

Kyle Steyn in action for Scotland 7s

Kyle Steyn tells a story about unity, forgiveness and love, the tale of a white South African cop assigned to protect Nelson Mandela amid some of the most volatile days the nation had seen.

The subject of the yarn is Steyn’s father, Rory, a former Johannesburg police officer raised in the days of apartheid and conditioned by division. In 1994, he was hired to lead the security team who watched over the newly-elected president during his five-year term – he knew little of what to expect or what kind of man he had been tasked with guarding.

Zander Fagerson will play his first game in five months tomorrow, having recovered from a broken leg.

The tight-head prop was injured against the Cheetahs on Glasgow’s trip to South Africa in September and is named to start against Cardiff Blues following five months of rehabilitation.

George Turner also returns from injury to start, the hooker hasn’t played since picking up an ankle injury in Glasgow’s home game against Lyon in the Champions Cup in December. Alex Allan completes the front-row.

Scott Cummings will play his 50th game for the club behind them, Tim Swinson is his partner in the engine room.

Edinburgh have retained the 1872 Cup after a strong second-half performance was enough to put Glasgow Warriors to the sword at a blustery Scotstoun.

Leading 6-3 at the half, the capital side capitalised on robust forward play and set-piece dominance to eventually grab a well-deserved win on the road, with captain Stuart McInally snatching the only try of the contest.

The victory now means Edinburgh have lifted the trophy in four of the last five seasons, whilst the four league points gained keeps the capital side well within the race for both the Guinness PRO14 Finals Series and Heineken Champions Cup qualification.

Pete Horne will play his 150th game for Glasgow Warriors in today’s 1872 Cup first leg at BT Murrayfield.

Pete Horne made his Warriors debut against Ulster nine years ago and has 343 points to his name to date, including 20 tries.

The 29-year-old has represented Scotland 38 times during his Warriors tenure and started Glasgow’s 2015 Guinness PRO12 Final win.

He starts again this weekend, at inside centre with Nick Grigg outside of him in midfield.

His younger brother George starts at scrum-half with Adam Hastings his half-back partner, both fresh from signing new contracts with the club this week.

The magical skill and power of Fijian players was on display last night as Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh both picked up valuable bonus points wins against Ospreys and Scarlets respectively.

Fijian Niko Matawalu came on as an early replacement to score a stunning hat-trick for Glasgow and inspire a bonus-point victory over Ospreys.

Wing Matawalu replaced Ruaridh Jackson after three minutes and crossed for three tries as Warriors extended their Pro14 Conference A lead to nine points.

Edinburgh climbed to third in Pro14 Conference B after an entertaining bonus-point win over Scarlets.

Bill Mata and Tom Brown – twice – scored first-half tries for the hosts but Scarlets struck through Morgan Williams and Paul Asquith to trail by just three points at the break.

Glasgow Warriors Head Coach Dave Rennie will be hoping a couple of weekends off is just what his squad needed to freshen up after a long and attritional season. It’s certainly been good for the Warriors’ injury list with just 4 longer-term absentees unavailable.

The coaches would have had 44 members of the full-time squad to select from this week – that’s a lot higher than the season average of 31 and there would have been some big debates before the final calls were made. The selection is a high quality one and predominantly homegrown as Glasgow seek to make it to their third Grand Final.

19 of the 23 are Scottish qualified
19 of the 23 are capped internationals
15 of the 23 came through either the Scottish Rugby Academy or Elite Development Programme

Glasgow Warriors are back in action at Scotstoun tonight Friday 23rd March . Kick off 7.35pm UK time (9.35pm SA time) at Scotstoun Stadium.

This will be just the second home PRO14 match of 2018 for Glasgow and there will only be one more in the current regular season. Scheduling around the Champions Cup and Six Nations is tricky but hopefully next season the league can avoid front-loading Warriors’ home games into the first half of the campaign and provide a more even distribution. It should mean a rowdy reception for the team though – after all absence does make the heart grow fonder…

On the pitch only 10 of 30 players started the same match last season – 6 for Glasgow and 4 for Zebre. The Italians’ answer to Nikola Matawalu – Guglielmo Palazzani – started at full back on his last trip to Scotstoun but will captain his side from scrum half this time around.

Zane Kirchner

Brandon Thomson

Glasgow Warriors are away to the Dragons tonight in Newport as Guinness PRO14 action resumes following a short break.

The Glasgow Warriors squad is a much depleted one with various players away on international duty and even more injured. Nine players are away with the Scotland squad while fourteen players are listed as injured including three hookers. One could pick a very strong team for Glasgow from the injured players alone with a good match day squad there if it was topped up with the players away on international duty.

Taking a look at the squads for tonight’s game it was interesting to note that Brandon Thomson has been selected to play as centre for Glasgow Warriors while Zane Kirchner is due to start at flyhalf for Dragons. It would be interesting to hear from those in the know about how often Thomson and Kirchner have played in these positions at professional level if at all. I can remember quite a long time ago fullback Zane Kirchner played in the number 13 jersery for the Springboks but don’t recall him playing at flyhalf. He has also featured on the wing for Leinster when he was still with them. Likewise, Brandon Thomson is becoming Mr Versatile for Glasgow Warriors as the former Stormers flyhalf shifts into the centre and also can play fullback, in fact I have even seen him playing on the wing for the Warriors.

The winner of world’s oldest inter-city rugby rivalry will be decided by the ‘best of three’ format used in the international arena it was confirmed today.

Edinburgh Rugby host Glasgow Warriors in the opening leg of the 1872 Cup this Saturday (23 December, kick-off 5.10pm UK time; 7.10pm SA time) at BT Murrayfield in round 11 of the Guinness PRO14.The sides will meet again at Glasgow’s Scotstoun home a week later (Saturday 30 December, kick-off 3.15pm UK time; 5.15pm SA time), with a third, potentially decisive derby held at the home of Scottish rugby on the last weekend of the regular season (27/28/29 April).

Previously the 1872 Cup was awarded to the aggregate winner of the two league matches between the clubs, however with the expansion of the Guinness PRO14 – to include South African sides Southern Kings and Toyota Cheetahs – means that the Scottish sides now meet three times in a season instead of two.

The derbies attract the biggest rugby audiences in Scotland outside of national team test matches and will see many of the stars who lit up the recent Autumn Test campaign go head-to-head with their club sides – battling it out for PRO14 points, bragging rights and the chance to get a hand on the coveted 1872 Cup.

For someone who is both a Blue Bulls and Glasgow Warriors Fan there will be fewer places in the world to rather be than in Bloemfontein on Friday night. Unfortunately though this will not be possible, but the action will still be followed with much interest from many miles away.

Brandon Thomson to return to Scotstoun

Stormers fly-half Brandon Thomson will return to Glasgow Warriors on a permanent contract ahead of the 2017/18 season, subject to medical.

The 22-year-old impressed during a short loan spell earlier this year and will return to Scotstoun on a two-year deal within the next couple of months.

Thomson played three times for Glasgow and scored a try on his debut against Ulster.

He can play at fly-half and full-back and has scored 26 points for the Stormers in seven Super Rugby appearances.

Thomson has also represented South Africa U20 at the Junior World Rugby Championship and has played for Western Province in the Provincial Cup and Currie Cup.

His current Stormers teammates Huw Jones and Oli Kebble will also join this summer and other additions to the squad include Adam Hastings from Bath, Callum Gibbins from the Hurricanes, Lelia Masaga from the Chiefs and Samuela Vunisa from Saracens.

Grayson Hart

Grayson Hart is set to become the second player to join Ealing Trailfinders from Glasgow Warriors this year when the international scrum-half signs on in time for pre-season.

Hart has won three caps for Scotland and follows the route paved by fly-half Rory Clegg who arrived from Glasgow Warriors in February.

“It is such an exciting time to be joining the Ealing Trailfinders as they are playing some excellent rugby and I want to help the club continue to grow.

“I want to contribute to the club on and off the field as best as I possibly can and keep developing as a player and a person.”

The 28-year-old Hart hails from Kaitaia in New Zealand and helped their U20 side win the 2008 U20 World Championship with a 38-3 win over England in the final.

However, he qualified to play for Scotland through his maternal grandmother and won his first cap away to Canada on Scotland’s 2016 summer tour. He then won a further two against Argentina and South Africa.

Oli Kebble

Oli Kebble will join the Warriors next season and the South African-born prop says he has ambitions to play international rugby for Scotland.

Oli will join Glasgow Warriors from the Cape Town-based Stormers after his Super Rugby commitments and will qualify for Scotland honours after completing three years of residency under World Rugby’s eligibility criteria.

He could follow in the footsteps of fellow-prop WP Nel who qualified for Scotland during his time with Edinburgh.

Oli said: “That’s definitely a goal of mine. I’d love to play international rugby and to play for Scotland would be a great honour. I know there’s a three-year waiting period and we’ll see how far I come, but it would definitely be a great thing if I could represent Scotland one day.

“For any rugby player, the ultimate goal would be to play international rugby, so I definitely considered that when talking to the Scottish Rugby Union, and that’s why I chose Glasgow in the end.”
