Exeter have signed lock Jannes Kirsten from South African Super Rugby side the Bulls on a one-year deal.
The 25-year-old joined the Bulls in 2012 and this will be his first time playing for another club.
Kirsten, who can also play back row, is the sixth signing of the summer for Chiefs’ director of rugby Rob Baxter.
Kirsten told the club website: “If you ask any South African player, they want to come here and have a taste of the Premiership.”

Duhan van der Merwe freely admits he viewed Edinburgh more as a club that could help kickstart his career than one which would be competing for honours when he joined last year.
The imposing 6ft 4in, 16 stone South African wing signed a two-year deal from Montpellier but was frustrated by a five-month injury which delayed his Edinburgh debut until November, which ironically came in his homeland during the back-to-back games against Cheetahs and Southern Kings. Since then, his five tries have helped contribute to Richard Cockerill’s men pushing themselves into play-off contention and the winger is now hoping to add a European semi-final to what is unfolding as an excellent season when Cardiff Blues come to BT Murrayfield tomorrow evening in the Challenge Cup quarter-final.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls added more silverware to their impressive trophy cabinet with overall victory at the Beachcomber World Club 10s in Mauritius on Sunday.
The Beachcomber 10s trophy will sit proudly alongside three Super Rugby trophies and 23 Currie Cup winners’ medals at Loftus Versfeld after some excellent play from the Blue Bulls.
In the final, the Pretoria based franchise beat the Toyota Cheetahs 26-7, using smothering defence and good options from turnover ball to create opportunities and frustrate their opponents in a hugely physical contest.
Fullback Duncan Matthews opened the scoring in the final when he ran on to a well-weighted grubber by scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl.
After the halftime hooter sounded, it was the Bulls who kept probing. Wing Sibhale Mxwane made a good break from deep and produced a deft offload to the supporting Shaun Adendorff, who went in for the score.
The Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd have named New Zealander John Mitchell as the new Executive of Rugby at the franchise.
Mitchell, currently in charge of the United States Eagles, will assume the role in Pretoria in July – following the Eagles’ June Tests and World Cup 2019 qualifying matches.
Nollis Marais will continue a head coach of the Bulls through to the end of the Super Rugby season and will also coach the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup.
The former All Black, Western Force and Emirates Lions coach said he feels “privileged” and will look to implement the same strong team culture he introduced within the Eagles player pool.
