Well, well, well… this sets up the Springboks vs All Blacks opener in the Rugby World Cup as a massive game!!
We should have won this match. Lack of composure in crucial moments was the problems. Last AB penalty also not one; bad ref decision.
Kolbe had a great match.
Overall performances…
Springboks did massive work in the 1st half and defended well in the 2nd half when the All Blacks really came at the Springboks!
Player performances on the Springboks side:
– Front row: Good performance… Malcolm Malcolm Marx far too quiet in general play… not his usual self.
– Locks: Good… a few early lineout losses, but they were part of the Springbok 1st half dominance, so they did their hard work.
– Loose forwards: A few penalties given away but a solid performance… Francois Louw came on and made an immediate impact… I think the loosies are sorted out for the World Cup.
– Scrumhalves: Faf de Klerk was solid but maybe a bit guilty of overdoing the box kicks… Herschell Jantjies was good… and of course he got the try which ended the game in a draw.
– Flyhalf: Pollard was solid… one miss at posts and a couple of badly placed box kicks… but he is undoubtably SA’s premier flyhalf.
– Centres: Sterling defence but Damian de Allende still only runs crash-ball. Am a little quiet… but Frans Steyn and Jesse Kriel made good impacts.
– Wings: Makazole Mapimpi, well I am not convinced by him. Cheslin Kolbe was dangerous the whole time and he’s a good choice for 1st choice right wing.
– Fullback: Willie le Roux had a mixed bag… some good options, some average ones.
– Replacements: The bench all made good impact.
On the All Blacks side, a few players stood out for me…
– Dane Coles – very busy and made a lot of ground
– Ben Smith – always dangerous
– Jack Goodhue – very dangerous and a hard runner
– Matt Todd – worked very hard
– Shannon Frizell – worked very hard
Beauden Barrett a bit of an off-day, so too maybe Richie Mo’unga.
Kieran Read also not great…
Draw a fair result.
Both Hansen and Rassie given some good insight into what needs some work.

The All Blacks made a lot of errors in this game, something we are not used to.
Last weekend against Los Pumas it was also an ugly game from the All Blacks.
I recon they will not be happy with where they currently are in preparation for the Rugby World Cup.
In comparison, I think the Springboks will be the more satisfied of the 2 sides… with a very good game last weekend and then a draw against the world’s best, away from home.

Sonny Bill Williams is over his prime.. I would not have picked him for the All Blacks anymore…
Rieko Ioane actually had a shocking game as well.
The starting All Blacks front row also did not impress me at all… their replacements were all way better than the starters, if you ask me. Owen Franks far too long in the teeth and Codie Taylor not in the same class as Dane Coles.
Brodie Retallic’s shoulder injury seemed quite severe… so he might be out for a while and might even miss the Rugby World Cup.

Yes Groot, Honestly. It’s a bit of a generational thing. Those over 70 yrs of age still think the best Team to ever Tour NZ, (and the best Team to EVER depart NZ shores) were the 1937 Springboks. (i.e.The best Team ever).
For the Baby Boomers (born 1947 to 1969) still the Springboks…………………….without doubt.
For those born after that, I would say they would rate Australia and SA equally.
Many things have had an effect on the rivalry………the years of SA isolation, the anti-apartheid movement, the loss of players to the NORTH, the rise of the Wallaby’s in the isolation years, etc.
But……………. for all that, among the Test Players themselves, the greatest challenge of all ……………….remains a Test Match against Springboks in SA, without question.
Honestly.
