Sorry old mate. But Ireland kept their foot on your throat and suffocated the Aussies.

As much as full back Kurtley Beale tried to weave his magic from the back, Ireland stood firm with a defence that refused to buckle under anything that the Wallabies threw at them.

Having won 20 of their 29 clashes with Ireland, with another match being drawn, Australia were favourites on paper, though these two countries have produced some epic battles over the years.

The Wallabies’ preparations suffered late setbacks, with star flanker David Pocock withdrawing on the morning of the game with a back strain. He was replaced by his Western Force teammate Ben McCalman, while Tatafu Polota-Nau came into the front-row for an ill Stephen Moore.

When Australia had the penalty right in front with 4 or 5 minutes to go they should have taken those 3 points. They were properly rattled and even the decission making there went haywire. A penalty then could have given them a much needed bonus point. Add to that that Ireland would then have to defend their win instead of just the lead makes the last 3 minutes so much harder.

    Many teams make this mistake.

    @ superBul:
I don’t understand the language: Stephen Moore pulled out minutes before kick off because he was ill. What does that mean? In-grown toenail? Nausea? Eye lash in his eye? What goes on here?

    Commiserations Oldie!

I don’t know if this is a good result for the Bokke… as far as I’m concerned the Wallabies in the quarters is a much harder proposition for the Bokke… and for that matter for the Wallabies.

I take it this result means the Wallabies will meet the Boks and possibly the ABs in the quarters and semis respectively.

On tonight’s performance, the Wallabies don’t deserve any favouritism, they were pathetic in their execution and I thought Robbie Deans should have brought the bench players on earlier. All in all, this is a challenging position for the Wallabies; no team which has lost a pool match has historically gone on to win the Webb Ellis Cup.

Mate, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

    @ grootblousmile:
Indeed mate, this is not a good thing for either of us. Boks v Wallabies in the quarters is a match worthy of the final and not the prelude. The way the Boks went about their work tonight, I don’t like the Wallabies’ chances. I would see this result as a bonus from left of field for PdV and his team and a slash to the throat for Robbie Deans and the Wallabies. Unfortunately, it adds credence to the criticisms from Campese and Farr-Jones of late.

I don’t know if this is a good or bad for us. I guess it depends on the weather conditions for the quarter final

    @ rugbybal:
I don’t think this result will auger well for either the Boks or the Wallabies.

    @ Old Griquas 14 in Sydney:179 – Howzit OldG,

Yeah it looks like a Wallabies/Bok quarter. Gonna be tough for both our teams cause whoever wins face the ABs after.

Wallabies have made it very hard for themselves now.

  • 194

Have to say congrats to Ireland. Never thought they would beat Oz. Then again Oz was without some of their top players.

From what I read they all will be back. Not too sure just read that.

So Wallabies will be tougher in the semi. But if Boks don’t pick up any injuries from here on Boks will be tough to beat if we can play like we done today.
