Stormers (3) 16 / Bulls (6) 19 (Final Score)

The DHL Stormers hosted the Vodacom Bulls at Newlands, Cape Town at 18:10 SA Time. This was the match thread for discussion of the game. The match was broadcast live on SuperSport 1, SHD & M-Net on TV in SA.

This game cannot be described as rugby, it was rather trench warfare… and the Bulls won the brutal war, revenging the Stormers win of earlier in the season at Loftus.

The Bulls were just simply better in the set pieces, the rest was all equal.

Scorers:

Stormers: 1 Penalty Kurt Coleman, 2 Penalties & 1 Conversion Dewaldt Duvenage, 1 Try Andries Bekker

Bulls: 4 Penalties & 1 Conversion Morné Steyn, 1 Try Francois Hougaard

What did this game reveal yesterday….

It revealed that Matfield was still the master and Bekker the student with some distance between them.
It accentuated that the Bulls dominated the set pieces (scrums and lineouts) and that this domination mattered enough.
It clearly showed why Ricky Januarie does not belong anywhere near the Springbok side.
It showed us again, for the umpteenth time, that Habana is lucky to even be in the Stormers side, let alone the Bokke.
It revealed to me that neither Deon Fourie or Tiaan Liebenverg or Gary Botha for that matter are Springbok contenders any more…. why, the bad lineout throwing by all 3!
It made me look with new anticipation at Dewaldt Duvenage as a Bok candidate to fill both scrumhalf and flyhalf substitute roles at the Bokke due to his versatility, consistency and goal kicking ability… he could be a welcome 3rd choice scrummie / flyhalf for the World Cup.

    goodmorning everyone
congrats to the bulls … you were the better side on saturday … still worried about the stormers’ bmt, though …. they seemed to be sitting back, waiting to see what the surprises were that matfield were referring to earlier last week!!
    ..
anyway, in hindsight (and although i’m still gutted by the loss) i do feel that this was the ideal result from a sa perspective. had the sharks achieved their (obvious) goal of 5 points from the lions’ game, we couldve had an easier road to getting 3 sa teams in the play-offs!! hopefully the brumbies can do us a favour again … will have to wait and see!!
