Springbok Jaque Fourie has been banned for four weeks for a dangerous tackle in Saturday’s 30-13 defeat to Australia, dealing another blow to South Africa’s calamitous defence of their Tri-Nations title.

The outside centre will miss two domestic Curry Cup matches and their third Tri-Nations test against New Zealand on Aug. 21 after being cited for the spear tackle on Wallabies’ number eight Richard Brown in the second minute of the Brisbane match.

Fourie, who received a four-week ban for a dangerous tackle on All Blacks centre Ma’a Nonu in last year’s campaign, was yellow carded for the offence as the world champions fell to their third defeat in three Tri-Nations matches.

Australia flyhalf Quade Cooper was also cited for a dangerous tackle, but was handed a two-week ban because of “mitigating circumstances” which included Cooper’s “good record”.

South African winger Jean de Villiers was suspended for two weeks for a dangerous tackle during the Springboks’ 31-17 defeat to New Zealand last week in Wellington, while lock Bakkies Botha was banned for nine weeks for headbutting scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan in their 32-12 loss to the All Blacks in Auckland on July 10.

whats the difference between last year and this?
some of the senior players look like they went a season too far
bring in new blood and give them a chance to grow in their positions

  • 35

    on the warparth, i see?

Discipline seems to be a huge problem here.
Player fatigue is also a factor. The players need to rest, and some them are getting it. The other issue is selection. Replace like for like. HB out, bring in Steggman or similar player. RP and FH great scrummies, but never got to play there. While a fit Januarie brings a bit of mongrel and unpredictability, an unfit Januarie brings nothing.
And we were tactically useless. The kick chase game did not work, so why continue to employ it? Look for our other strengths, retain the possession, keep it tight till the red zone and then unleash the back line.

Looks like Snorre has a really lost it big time. He needs an urgent rethink of his support staff, and also playing personnel. But will he do it?

  • 39

    lions4ever @ 38
the kick and chase game was not so long ago described as “playing to our strength”
ie keeping the ball in the opposition half, force them to play from deep in their own territory and then milk them for penalties. pdv, on the other hand, when he took over talked about “heads-up” rugby
    ie
rugby in which you read the situation on the field, not just in defense, but especially on attack. he was ridiculed for that, and his approach described as helter-skelter rugby, headless rugby etc etc etc
what is the biggest difference between us and the 2 austalasian teams?
they can read situations on the field and adapt to it … we on the other hand, if a move has been called, go through with it even when we see that the opposition also has read our move, we move lateral over the field and we do not have dummy runners!!
    we
now bemoan the fact that we “didnt blood new players in our 2nd year” etc etc
    whilst nz were doing that
    but
we wanted results, when a bit of patience might now have paid off handsomely!!

    the way forward?
i cant see how we can go away from our “strength” at this late stage
so the obvious thing would be to keep a small nucleas of the current team and give younger players an oppertunity to prove their mettle as theres no way that we can retain the 3n trophy anymore!!

What does one say after a disasterous rugby weekend?

    Hello?

    Hehehehe

    @ tight head:

    TH

I said the same about the 7’s Bokke earlier this year.

They seemed to think the rest of the world would just let them pitch up and play with the same brand and intensity as last season.

“Sorry SARU, it don’t work like that”.

Ultimately (IMO) we need to look at the overall profesionalism of the Rugby structures in the country, and see whether those running the show have required business and Rugby acumen needed to continually improve and evolve the game at both National and domestic levels.

Currently it seems that there is no forward planning and implementation being done.

SARU, should go & look up what the Japanese work “kaizen” means, then apply it. CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT.

It works wonders ALL OVER THE WORLD IN MANY DIFFERENT BUSINESS’.

Either remove the collective head from the sand, or go live with the other ostriches in Oudshoorn.

My apologies to GBS, but I couldnt resist!!

Koos and Japie from BRAKPAN were in Pretoria for the Currie Cup Final when they suddenly spotted this sign on a shop window:

    Suits R20-00 each
    Shirts R10-00 each
    Trousers R8-00 per pair

Koos says to his pal. “Hey Japie, check at that! Bliksem, we could buy a whole load of those clothes… then when we get back we could resell them and make us a moerse fortune!”

“Now listen boet, when we go into the shop you keep your big mouth shut, hey!

Just you let me do all the talking and wheeling and dealing stuff, because if they hear your BRAKPAN accent, they might try to rip us off. I’ll be giving them my best PRETORIA accent so they think we’re locals.”

They go in and Koos says, “Excuse me sir, I’ll take 50 of your finest suits at R20 each, plus 100 shirts at R10 each, and 50 pairs of your trousers at just R8 each. I will be paying in cash, and taking those items with me today, if you don’t mind.”

The owner of the shop interrupts, “You from BRAKPAN, right?”

“Err….ja” says Koos, “how do you know?”

The owner says, “This is a dry-cleaner, you doos!”

    @ Scrumdown:
You are a breath of fresh air here!!
    Exactly!!
    It is not rocket science.
Rugby is a business, and needs the correct intellectual capital to direct it.
With all the best resources in the world, (read players and facilities)world class management is the imperative to get consistent results.
Talking about anything else right now, other than a coaching/management change is simply re arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
You have to resolve the root cause of the problem first.
My view is that despite the talk of PDV having a contract till 2011, and the political sensitivity around firing him, he will not last till 2011.
SARU will very soon realize that their real problem is how to make the change and still save face.
I expect a sideways movement for PDV that is carefully disguised as a face saving option, while they bring in the next coach, and all the while deny that PDV has failed.

  • 49

    48@ tight head:
Snor-tor and both his Assistance will last till after a disasterous RWC in 2011.

There’s not brass balls heavy enough in SARU to act otherwise….

Here is a synopsis of Garry Golds coaching experience. One should perhaps look at his family connections to get an understanding of how he could rise so quickly to a top job.
The only thing he has going for him is the fact that Jake was a great technical analyst before getting into big time coaching. Perhaps we should consider the main coach at Stormers…Rassie, he pretty much hasnt put a foot wrong.

“Gary Gold has served with distinction at the Vodacom Stormers as their assistant coach and previously as their technical director. As one of the most respected tactical analysts in the game, Gold is renowned for his academic and precise approach to coaching. He is a previous head coach of Western Province and London Irish. He will continue as an assistant coach with the Vodacom Stormers to the end of the 2010 season.”

  • 51

    @ grootblousmile:
I would not argue that point against you GBS, as you are right.
I am hoping that the build up of pressure becomes too much.
I also do not discount PDV resigning himself under the pressure.
You know like his famous quote of “giving it back to the whites”

  • 52

    tighthead @ 51
    and
that comment was made under trying circumstances, wasnt it?
    it
was during a time that unconfirmed statements was sold as the truth in newspapers
    and
when he was harassed by sports writers from especially the afrikaans papers
    ….
if ive been under the same circumstances? well maybe i wouldve had the same impression (that white people would stoop that low only to keep the running of rugby within a selected few .. cause that was sure as hell the impression generated during that time) and have said the same thing!!
most of us would say things that we regret under that exact same circumstances, wouldnt we?
