Bulls star faces the blues

Bulls forward Gurthro Steenkamp has been summonsed by Standard Bank in the Pretoria High Court for allegedly being indebted to the bank in the amount of R1.2 million with regards to the bond on his Moreletapark home.
The bank stated that he has failed to pay his monthly instalments – which is R14 368 – in spite of the bank issuing him with notices in this regard.
In a letter addressed to him dated December 4, 2008, the bank informed Steenkamp that he was in arrears and had to pay up immediately. The bank at that stage already threatened that it might head to court if the arrears were not paid.

Gurthrö Steenkamp would like to make the following statement through his manager, James Adams of In Touch Sports:
Steenkamp would like to clear the air regarding articles in the various newspapers on 23 September 2009, relating to him being “sued” over his house bond.
Steenkamp was informed a few weeks ago, just before he left on the Tri-Nations tour that a summons had been issued against him. This was the first that he knew that money was owing to Standard Bank. At no stage did anybody call him or send him letters advising this was the case. Steenkamp was under the impression that all was up to date with his payments.
Before leaving on the Tri-Nations Tour he spoke to the respective lawyers of Standard Bank and he agreed that it would be settled in full upon his return. He went overseas and only upon reading the newspaper, realised that the bank was not informed of such an correspondence. Steenkamp has since spoken to Standard Bank and arranged settlement with the bank.
We would like to make it clear that at no stage did Steenkamp avoid paying his bond.
