This must surely be the bottom of the barrell as far as games go, it was scrappy and error-ridden and UJ looked listless and dumb, with a very brave Madibas team trying their hearts out to make a game of it and nearly succeeding at the end.
Maties (6) 32 / Pukke (6) 6 (Final Score)
FNB Maties hosted FNB Pukke at the Danie Craven Stadium, Stellenbosch at 19:00 SA Time. This was the match thread for discussion of the game. The match was broadcast live on SuperSport 1 & SHD on TV in SA.
With both teams starting slowly and the halftime score at 6 / 6 it did not look too exciting but Maties came out firing in the second half and scored a furthr 26 points to none by Pukke, eventually ending as comfortable winners by 32 / 6.
Shimlas 10 / Ikeys 23 (Final Score)
Shimlas hosted FNB UCT (Ikeys) at Shimla Park, Bloemfontein at 17:00 SA Time. This was the match thread for discussion of the game. The match was broadcast live on SuperSport 1 and CSN on TV in SA.
FNB UCT controlled the game well and led right through, with Shimlas making far too many basic mistakes.
This mtch was scrappy in general.
The Maties have won three titles in a row and even though some find winning boring – those who lose tend to find it boring, it seems! – there is no doubting the overall excellence of the Men in Maroon since 2008.
A packed calendar of events awaits those hungry to sample some rugby again. Diarise the following provisional DHL Stormers dates so that you don’t miss out.
The fixtures for the fourth-ever FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International have been announced; with the 2011 tournament kicking-off in Bloemfontein in February when Shimlas play host to UCT in a repeat of one of last season’s semifinals.
The importance of the Varsity Cup has been underlined once again by several SA rugby heavyweights joining various coaching staffs.
Heyneke Meyer, the Blue Bulls director of rugby, Herkie Kruger, Lions flyhalf, and David de Villiers, Cheetahs lock, have all joined Varsity Cup coaching staffs.
The FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International will expand its
involvement in South African university rugby, with the creation of a new second tier competition from 2011 onwards.
As a result, five ‘B-Section’ universities will compete against each other in a double round competition starting next year, called the Varsity Shield – a decision that was officially ratified at the special general meeting of the Varsity Cup (Pty) Ltd in Sandton on Friday.
