Allister Coetzee looks set to be named the new Springbok coach in December.
It has reliably been learnt that Heyneke Meyer has lost the support of the majority of South Africa’s provincial unions and will be replaced at the General Council meeting of the South African Rugby Union on 11 December.
SARU has already postponed their General Council meeting by a week, to 11 December. It will be preceeded by a meeting of the Executive Council on 9 December.
Current team manager Ian Schwartz, who is employed as a permanent staff member of SARU, has apparently flown to Japan to speak to former Springbok Assistant Coach and DHL Stormers Head Coach, Allister Coetzee, to take over the national team.
Coetzee has an exit clause in his contract with Kobelco Steelers – the club he coaches in the Japanese Top League.
It is uncertain at this stage what will happen to the rest of Meyer’s coaching staff – which include Ricardo Loubscher (backline), Johann van Graan (forwards), Pieter de Villiers (scrum) John McFarland (defence) and Basil Carzis (conditioning).
It is known that Van Graan has thrown his name into the Stormers coaching hat – a list that also includes John Mitchell (the apparently runaway leader in that race), John Dobson, Brendan Venter, Robbie Fleck, Paul Treu, Frans Ludeke and Jerome Paarwater.
The DHL Stormers and Southern Kings are the only franchises who have not finalised their coaching set-ups for 2016.
However, the Southern Kings will be run by SARU – which means the national body’s mobi unit is likely to fill the coaching position in Port Elizabeth.
The biggest gripe against Meyer has been that the Springboks have not progressed, but rather regressed, in the past 4 years.
There are also issues surrounding transformation by some of the political animals in the SARU structures.
Coetzee is also of course the man that will tick SARU’s transformation box (like Peter de Villiers did in 2008).

Now just how would the appointment of Toetie be better?
Maybe I’m missing something, but is Toetie not the man who had to be bailed out at the Bokke during the 2007 tournament when Jake White brought Eddie Jones on board?
Toetie’s approach whilst at the Stormers was to build a very, very competent defending team… and the tight forwards certainly improved… but there was still always the same achilles heel that was exactly the problem in 2007 under Jake White… the bluntness on attack. I do not think Toetie has an excuse to offer on the attacking stakes either, because WP and the Stormers certainly sat and still sits with some very, very potent players in the backline.
Toetie is a very nice chap, and if he is appointed I will give him my complete support.
… but NICE does not always translate to BEST…
The other thing is, I am sure we will see another 4-year term of appointment… I do not think any coach in his right mind would take a shorter term of employment. So, if the appointment is done right now and not only in a year or 2’s time, we will once again be bound to a “Watch us at the next World Cup” scenario… and that is not ideal either.
Whatever the situation…. Gooooooooooooooo Bokke!
Well, he will certainly fit some criteria very well. He is articulate, and handles the media very well. He has coached at SR level and has also been no2 at the Boks. He is a very competent previously disadvantaged individual. So far so good, but he definitely lacks the ability to develop an attacking game plan, which IMO is will rule him out. Unless he has a very good assistant that can help develop a good attacking style of play along with the defensive style favoured by Coetzee.
Just as the current assistant staf is being critisized… Maybe the misisng link for AC is assistant coaches that can influence him positively.

Mitchell and Eddie is incomparable, Eddie left, not only because there was nothing keeping him here, but also it was a better job… Mitchell is forced here because no one else wants him 😆

Ek hoop maar hy word nie aangestel nie. As hy wel aangestel word en hy behaal sukses met die Bokke, of ten minste meer sukses as HM, dan sal sy assistente natuurlik al die krediet kry.
Enigiemand behalwe HM, maar laat AC die laaste opsie van almal wees…vir nou.
Ek moet se, dis nogal interressant om deur die verskillende blogs oor AC se moontlike aanstelling te lees.
Baie se kommentaar: AC moet nie aangestel word nie, want hy’t nog niks bereik nie. ‘n Currie Beker (of 2) tel nie, want ons weet die CC standaard is Vodacombeker/Craven Week gehalte. Stel liewer vir Ackerman aan.
