AFTER DIRECTING THE ALL BLACKS TO A RECORD BREAKING VICTORY, COACH STEVE HANSEN IS UNLIKELY TO TAKE HIS CHAMPION TEAM THROUGH TO THE NEXT WORLD CUP AS HIS ONLY CONTRACTED UNTIL 2017.
From being assistant coach when the All Blacks won in 2011, Hansen has enhanced his reputation since taking over as head coach four years ago. Under his guidance they have won 49 of 54 games and the win over Australia made the All Blacks the first side to defend the World crown and the first to win it three times.
But Hansen said the time is fast approaching for someone else to take over the prestigious coaching role.
“There’s a reason why it only goes to ’17, because I’m not sure about that. I wouldn’t say no but I’m certainly not saying yes either. I like the idea of changing the guard halfway through a four-year cycle which has the World Cup in the middle of it.
“When people come in it’s easy to get some real dramatic shift early and it’s a lot harder to keep that momentum going. I’d probably say it’s more likely I won’t be there after ’17, than being there,” he said.

Yet, when I just a few days ago, suggested that we appoint coaches in 2 year cycles from before to 2 years after WC tournaments it was deemed as a stupid idea.

@ nortie: lets get this clear Nortie. I don’t want him to continue as coach. He gave it his best shot and failed(IMHO). I did not enjoy the playing style of our rugby under Meyer. He believes otherwise. I guess the two points difference and Habs’ early charge at Carter to force a re-kick and Schalk’s turnover could be interpreted by him as the 2 point game-breakers and that is his right. I’m not buying it. We never deserved to win or even come close. The AB’s are a way better team than the Boks.
But what gets me, is the abuse Meyer has to take for his rugby philosophy and belief when he’s basically just a decent man when one breaks it all down. Rugby is a game. Not life and death. That’s my point.
@ nortie: doubt it. Unless I’m a complete sucker, I very much doubt Meyer is in it purely for the money. I’ll argue with you until the cows come home about it.
If per chance, Heyneke gets his contract renewed, I’m damn certain he wont continue along the same path he pursued in his attempt to secure us the Bill. He’d be an absolute tool to do that and I certainly don’t think Meyer is clueless. Everything I’ve read about the man suggests that he’s far from being an idiot. Conservative and stubborn maybe but stupid NOT. His is one of the most difficult jobs in the world. Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t. It’s a fine line to negotiate.

Meyer is a decent man…no doubt about it. But he hasn’t that something something to take the Bok to the next level. Maybe there is no one in the SA coaching set up who can do it. Therefore it is time for Saru to put their pride in their pocket and hunt down the person who can.
Other coaches may be judged on their rugby abilities alone, not Meyer.
Name me some coaches who were not decent people.
The Meyerites will be very happy if he gets 4 or even 8 more years, in their eyes he is the greatest and can do no wrong.
Forget about winning trophies, that doesn’t count in sport, unless maybe if he wins the Ms Congeniality Cup for being a decent and nice fellow.
I fail to understand how someone who has not been too bright for the last 4 years when it came to selections and game plans will now all of a sudden turn into the rugby equivalent of Einstein. If he wasn’t able to learn and change in the 4 years he had, why would that change now?
Actually, his job wasn’t that difficult.
He was still praised even when his team lost.
He could always blame the franchise coaches when he was unhappy with form and fitness of players.
He could blame his players for disregarding his game plan when they lost.
He could praise himself when we won by saying the players followed his game plan.
He could pick whoever he wanted without fear of failure.
The press was very lenient towards him.
And he was and is still loved and revered on RT and other Bulls orientated websites

Hi Nortie…. The Abs fulfilled their destiny and starting to come down now after 6 weeks or so of little work.
As for Meyer, he is getting desperate methinks pulling out his ANC card. It’s really strange that he could continue as Bok coach when everyone can see that he hasn’t got the game to take them to no 1…let alone beat the top teams consistently…to the point where he is getting ambushed by tier two sides.
One last thing brother…how about the Argies…finally they have the ranking they deserve…All is well…
@ nortie: most coaches are decent people Nortie. You miss my point completely. You’re so pissed off that its starting to cloud your normally sound judgement. I fear that if he stood in front of you, you’d shoot him.
I’ll repeat; Meyer’s 4 year stint as our national coach was an abject failure. He fails on every count. He should not be reappointed under any circumstances. That’s my opinion. And clearly yours. We can do better, even with our meagre local coaching resources. John Dobson would be a better coach and he’s just lost the CC.
I think we should drop the vitriol towards the man though. He did his best. It simply wasn’t good enough.
I did not like Jake White. Pre WC ’07 I thought he was a crap national coach. A stroke of genius (or maybe he rubbed a bottle) brought Eddie to the rescue. Our attack changed and we suddenly started scoring tries and the rest is history. But I never denigrated Jake like I’m seeing being focused on Meyer.
THAT’s the point.
