Junior Bulumakau

New Glasgow Warrior’s winger Junior Bulumakau

Glasgow Warriors have signed winger Junior Bulumakau from the British Army on a 1 year contract.

The 24-year-old, who has been training with the Warriors for the last couple of months, played in the 28 / 10 defeat to Clermont in the pre-season fixture in France last Friday and scored a spectacular try from the halfway line.

Junior was born in Fiji and moved to Scotland at the age of 10 with his parents. He has served as an infantryman with The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland since February 2010, deploying on overseas training exercises to Kenya and Cyprus.

He has played for Heriot’s in the BT Premiership, while in May he scored a try for the British Army and was named man of the match in their 36 / 18 win over the Royal Navy in front of 80 000 supporters at Twickenham.

He becomes the 2nd winger to join the club ahead of the new campaign, along with Taqele Naiyaravoro from the Waratahs, while Scotland 7s wingers Mark Robertson and Nyle Godsmark are training with the squad.

Speaking about joining Glasgow Warriors, Junior Bulumakau said: “It’s a huge honour to sign for the Guinness PRO12 champions and I’m really happy to be here.”

“I’d like to thank Glasgow Warriors for taking me on trial and offering me a contract. Opportunities like this only come along once and you need to grab them. ”

“I enjoyed playing my 1st game for the club on Friday and I can’t wait to run out at Scotstoun.”

Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: “We’re delighted to welcome Junior from the British Army and he’s fitted in very well in our environment.

“He’s now officially joined us after training with us for most of pre-season and scored a cracking try in his 1st game for the club on Friday. Junior has a very good understanding of the game and has shown an excellent work ethic on and off the field.  He will add further competition for places in our back 3 and we’re looking forward to seeing him challenge for a starting place over the next few weeks.”

Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Platt of The Royal Regiment of Scotland added: “We are delighted that Private Bulumakau is able to take his rugby to the next level by signing for the Guinness PRO12 champions.

“Sport is a big part of life in The Royal Regiment of Scotland and many of the skills that we drill into our infantrymen – leadership, communications, team cohesion – are directly transferable to the rugby field, so we have every faith that Junior can be a big hit with Glasgow Warriors.”

“As a Regiment, we wish him every success over the next year.”

Welcome to the Warrriors Junior, hopefully he plays many great games and scores lots of tries. Also interesting to note that he is Scotland qualified so who knows where this may lead for him.

Junior Bulumakau sounds like a good bloke, enjoyed the interview think it is well worth a viewing. Quite a funny bit about the stint of pres-season training he did with the Warriors under the Marines – from around the 2 min mark, also shows he scored a good try against Clermont last weekend – from around 3min 15s.
