Former Springbok and Sharks legend Mark Andrews says the Sharks need a coach who understands their culture.

Gary Gold took charge of the Sharks in Super Rugby, but it was recently announced that Gold would not coach the team in future and instead focus on his Director of Rugby role.

Andrews feels former Sharks centre Dick Muir would be the ideal candidate to take the coaching reins in Durban.

“I hear the names of New Zealanders Robbie Deans and Todd Blackadder are also mentioned as possibilities – but would they fit in with the Sharks culture? Andrews questioned.

The former Sharks skipper spoke to reporters at Ellis Park on Wednesday where the 1995 World Cup winning Springboks gathered for their 20-year reunion.

“One of the big problems is that the Sharks have had 5 coaches in 2-and-a-half years. They should get it right with the new coach appointed.

“Things are done differently in Durban. It’s a more laid back atmosphere and things happen at a more sedate tempo. It’s not every coach that can adapt there.

“Jake White didn’t know their culture and couldn’t adapt to it. Dick Muir understands that culture because he played for the Sharks  and hails from Durban. He’ll know how to handle the players.”
