David Pocock
The Brumbies are following protocol regarding the concussion of flank David Pocock in the hopes that he will be available for their must-win game against the DHL Stormers on Saturday.
Pocock was taken out of the Crusaders game just before halftime on Saturday, after he copped a knock to the head from a Richie McCaw cleanout at the breakdown.
The Brumbies No 7 stayed down for several seconds, but played on for about 5 minutes before coming off.
“After a concussion someone should rest up for a day or so and then they can start a very graduated program of physical activity… because we do know just returning to non-contact exercise can potentially exacerbate symptoms,” Australian Institute of Sport chief medical officer David Hughes said.
“Sometimes even people just doing things like reading computers and doing cognitive tasks such as reading or concentrating can exacerbate their symptoms.
“If someone’s had a pretty uncomplicated concussion where they really didn’t have any symptoms the following day then they can potentially return to sport in about 6 days or so.
“It appears to me, as an external observer, that the Brumbies are following best practice in relation to how they manage concussion.”
Brumbies’ coach Stephen Larkham expected Pocock to be fine to play in their play-off against the Stormers.
The Brumbies have taken a 25-man squad to Cape Town, which included all of the game-day 23 from the Crusaders game plus back Nigel Ah Wong and prop Les Makin.

Yeah…if it wasn’t for his “training camp” we would’v been able to train the whole week with the squad to face the Lions (and beat them). Played with a full strength team against the Sharks and beat them and people like you would’nt have something to say about or 7th position because we would’ve ended up in 2nd place on the log.

Can’t wait for the gnashing of teeth and crying of tears (about our log position) when we host the final at Newlands against the Highlanders in a few weeks’ time. Sommer take revenge for 1999 and be crowned champs.

Stormers will lose on the weekend. I watched the Lions game (at Newlands) and I have unfortunate visions of a repeat, with worse results. I am sorry but our SA teams have collectively hit a low point this year.
The Baby Boks yesterday, were ‘owned’ by the Poms in the set pieces. The game was lost right there. Their backline was better than ours. Pretty much sums up our rugby across the board.
We need a new template.

@ MacroPolo: what disadvantages? They did it last time didn’t they(without Pocock)? Travel isn’t everything. Quality usually prevails.

But I think it is quite possible that the Stormers can beat the Brumbies on Saturday (already did it this year) and the Tahs away (already did it this year)
Highlanders can beat the Chiefs at home (already did it this year) and surprise the Canes away from home.

I am sure you guys will win this weekend at least, you honestly have a fairly good chance this year, albeit away from home, at the worst you only have to play 1 NZ team out of the 3 games as the NZ teams have to take each other out before the final.

@ MacroPolo: Brumbies maybe. Big maybe. If we couldn’t deal with the Lions(at home) recently then how can we be sure we’ll manage against the Brumbies without the services of Vermeulen? They snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at Newlands last time if you’ll recall. The difference was a pole.

The Stormers hosting a final from 7th position would actually be quite comical 😆 I dont think SANZAR ever thought that far when setting up the conference system, Highlanders are still dark horses, with the Hurricanes that will probably choke.
