All BlacksThe All Blacks selectors gave their 1st hint of World Cup thinking, naming 5 new faces in an enlarged 41-man squad.

Coach Steve Hansen has named 33 new All Blacks since they won the last World Cup in 2011 with the latest additions being Crusaders hooker Codie Taylor, Hurricanes lock James Broadhurst and fullback Nehe Milner-Skudder, Highlanders flyhalf Lima Sopoaga and wing Waisake Naholo.

Naholo is the leading try-scorer in Super Rugby this year, touching down twice in the Highlanders 24 / 14 play-off victory over the Chiefs on Saturday to take his total for the year to 11.

Milner-Skudder is a cousin of Buff Milner and a nephew of George Skudder, both former All Blacks.

There is also a recall for 3-Test hooker Hika Elliot who has not been required for international duty since June 2012.

A final group of 31 to defend their world crown will be named at the end of August following The Rugby Championship Tests against South Africa, Australia and Argentina as well as a 1-off Test with Samoa and an extra clash with Australia.

Hansen indicated the huge squad would allow him to balance World Cup tapering with laying the foundations for next year when several senior players will have left and others may be seconded for Olympic Games duty.

Skipper Richie McCaw is 1 of several players including Dan Carter, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith and Keven Mealamu who are expected to retire or move overseas after the World Cup.

“As always, our planning is about today, tomorrow and the future. But our main priority now will be to get this group functioning as its own team as quickly as possible,” Hansen said.

“With only 5 games before the World Cup, it’s important that we get gameplans and other aspects of our environment embedded as quickly as possible.”

Hansen said the large squad gave the selectors an opportunity to see how the new players “cope at Test level”.

“This will allow us to make better decisions when it comes to selecting our World Cup team in August,” he added.

Nepo Laulala, a brother of Racing Metro centre and former All Black Casey Laulala, was added to the squad as cover for injured prop Charlie Faumuina, while veteran scrumhalf Andy Ellis is cover for Tawera Kerr-Barlow who missed the entire Super Rugby season with a knee injury.

Players not considered due to injury included Augustine Pulu, Aaron Cruden, Nathan Harris, Steven Luatua and lock Patrick Tuipulotu.

Hurricanes and Highlanders players will not be available until after their involvement in Super Rugby.

2 Responses to New Zealand Rugby: 5 Newbies in the All Blacks mix

Naholo is going to put plenty of heat on for that right wing spot… Jane has the inside running of been there done that and also being capable of playing at fullback but the x factor try scoring ability of Naholo can’t be denied…tough choices ahead…
Milner Skudder has been a sensation outta nowhere this year and whilst he probably won’t make it this year…he’s definitely a real chance for 2016…
Sopoaga just needs to keep up his form….he’s moved into fourth in the rankings and if another falls over ahead of him…then he’s a shot…
