    Am a bit confused thought the University in Bloem was also known as Kovsies where is this Shilmas from

    125 @ Bullscot:
    Shimlas = Kovsies… same thing

    They have always been known as Shimlas for their rugby.

    Kovsies was and I suppose still is the nickname for the University itself.

    The Universities were known as Colleges (Kollege in Afrikaans) before they became Universities, hence:

    Tukkies – Transvaal(se) Universiteitskollege
    Kovsies – Kollege vir (van?) die Oranje Vrystaat

    The name, Kovsies, refers to the Instititution; Shimlas to the 1st rugby team, & if my memory does not fail me, Irawas to the 2nd rugby team of the Kovsies.

    I’m not sure whether the word, Shimlas, is also used when referring to the 1st teams of other sporting codes at the university, or not …

    Interesting too the nicknames of the 2nd teams of other Universities.

    Prior to acquiring university status, Stellenbosch University was named Victoria Kollege – & their 2nd rugby team was called “die Viktoriane” in recognition of that fact.

    In days gone by, before the renaming fad took hold, NMMU was the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) & hence the Uppies. In the 70s UPE had a powerful cricket club to the extent that UPE fielded 2 teams in the Port Elizabeth/Uitenhage 1st Division Cricket Club Championship. The 2nd team was called the “Pollocks” in honour of the contributions to Port Elizabeth, Eastern Province & South African cricket of the great Peter & Graeme Pollock. Their father was the editor of the Eastern Province Herald, the daily morning newspaper, & in that capacity he also made a substantial contribution to cricket in the province.
    PS – In those (amateur/semi-professional) days Test & Provincial cricketers still regularly played club cricket. How times have changed.
