Duane Vermeulen

Duane Vermeulen

Stormers captain Duane Vermeulen will not play in the team’s next Super Rugby match, against the Highlanders in Dunedin on 28 March.

Vermeulen played his 5th consecutive match for the Stormers when they hosted the Chiefs at Newlands this past weekend.

According an agreement between the SA Rugby Union and the Super Rugby franchises, key Springboks will not be allowed to play more than 5 games on the trot in this year’s competition, in order to keep them fresh for the Rugby World Cup later in the year.

This means centre Juan de Jongh will take over the captaincy for the game against the Highlanders, with Schalk Burger likely to be included in the starting team.

After the Highlanders game, the Stormers also face the Hurricanes (3 April), Waratahs (11 April) and Western Force (18 April) on their Australasian tour.

The Stormers have a BYE this coming weekend.

    1 @ MacroBull:
Both Tera Mtembu & Willem Alberts are injured… see the Pieter-Steph du Toit Article, which includes a Sharks Fitness Report at the bottom.

    1 @ MacroBull:
Regarding the Bulls: There is no way one can thow Jaco Visagie in as starting hooker… and I would think that is the Visagie you mention, seeing as Callie Visagie is out injured for 2 or 3 weeks. Akona Ndungane has broken his hand, and is out for a month.

There is also no way that Frans Ludeke will make that many changes from the previous game to the next… no way in hell!

    @ MacroBull:
Want to take a bet that the Sharks will play Lambie and Coetzee, even though they have had 5 straight games?

    @ grootblousmile:
We have to rest strauss eventually (no more than 5 consecutive weeks). Id rather rest him vs the force than have him rested for the crusaders game… Who else will ludeke select but visagie?

    @ nortie:
No need. I suspect that as well.

    @ grootblousmile:
That team was the “worst case scenario” also having our best available for the saders game who will have keiran read and sam whitelock back as well.

Then basson will play as well In akonas place.

I suspect that the bulls will pull the same “dick move” as the sharks and play the main boks more than 5 games in a row.

    1 @ MacroBull:

Sharks team may very well look like this:

    1. Beast Mtwarira
    2. Bismarck du Plessis
    3. Jannie du Plessis
    4. Mouritz Botha
    5. Marco Wentzel
    6. Khaya Majola
    7. Renaldo Bothma
    8. Ryan Kankowski
    9. Conrad Hoffman
    10. Fred Zeilinga
    11. Jack Wilson
    12. Frans Steyn
    13. JP Pietersen
    14. Odwa Ndungane
    15. SP Marais

    16. Dale Chadwick
    17. Kyle Cooper
    18. Lourens Adriaanse/Matt Stevens ?
    19. Lubabalo Mtyanda
    20. Etienne Oosthuizen/Dan du Preez ?
    21. Stefan Ungerer/Cameron Wright ?
    22. Lionel Cronjé
    23. S’bura Sithole

Plenty players that have to be rested or are out injured, but still a strong 23.
