Your post 87 is teeming with red herrings totally irrelevant to your assertion after their round 1 victory vs. the Lions that the Hurricanes is a quality team; that is what I took issue with. They ARE a mediocre franchise however much you like to resort to puffery.

Your final paragraph indicates that you have not properly applied your mind to the data, or have not properly digested/interpreted the data. Firstly data of the late 90s/early 2000s are imo irrelevant for being too distant in time. My analysis relates to only S14 & S15, i.e. the past 9 years. During these 9 years, in the context of the tournament as a whole, the Bulls had 5 superior performance years, & the Sharks & the Stormers merely 3 superior performance years each.

I have not concerned myself with or visited the overall win/loss ratio of the mentioned 3 saffa franchises. Taken in isolation the win/loss ratio without any special consideration of which franchises reach the semi finals & finals & the outcomes of those knockout matches, at best determines who will end up regular tournament bridesmaids & confetti girls. Win/loss ratio is in any event less than perfect given tournament conditions where bonus points play an important role.
Since 2006 to date (during the terms of S14 & S15) the Bulls may, or may not, have best win/loss ratio of the saffa franchises, but viewed in isolation it is irrelevant.

Fact is giving proper consideration & weight (for the duration of the 2006 – 2014 tournament period) to where the franchises position at the conclusion of the log stages, which franchises are the 2nd & 1st losing semi – finalists, which franchises are the runners-up and which franchises are the tournament champions, & then tallying, weighting (in favour of recency), & averaging those scores, results in my following ranking & ratings:

    Quality Franchises

    Crusaders – 21.129
    Chiefs – 18.392
    Bulls – 16.982
    Waratahs – 15.645
    Sharks – 14.268

    Mediocre Franchises

    Stormers – 12.957
    Brumbies – 12.394
    Reds – 10.775
    Hurricanes – 9.253
    Blues – 8.008

Over the duration of this year’s S15 my expectation remains that cream will rise to the top & that the semi-finalists, & ergo the eventual winner, will come from the Top 5 ranked (quality) franchises. At least I have a basis for my opinion.
