Super RugbyWith Super Rugby fast approaching it is important to have a look at what each of the teams are doing in their preparations and who they have at their disposal.

As the teams prepare for this brusing competition there is the oppourtunity to test out combanations as well as see how the new boys go.

The Sharks will travel to French champions Toloun to test out their game plan against the Galacticos of rugby while the Bulls will take on the Cheetahs in a traditional pre-season match in Polokwane.

The Australasian sides will also warm up against each other with the Highlanders setting up a comprehensive pre-season schedule due to the first round bye.

The ‘transfer market’ has made the upcoming Super Rugby season an exciting prospect with some big names in James O’Connor and Nick Cummins returning to Australia.

Menawhile, the Bulls have bolstered their squad with some excellent former Cheetahs players.

Finally, and unsurprizingly, Ma’a Nonu has made another move – this time back to the Hurricanes.

South Africa:

Vodacom BullsVodacom Bulls:

The Bulls 2014 season was not one of their best, although they did rally late with a number of good wins towards the back end of the competition.

The South African conference was particularly weak, but the Bulls did manage to claim second spot in the conference and they will be looking to do better overall in 2015 with an impressive looking squad.

Pre-season game:

  • Saturday 24 January: Vodacom Bulls vs Toyota Cheetahs, Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane

CheetahsToyota Cheetahs:

The Cheetahs showed in 2013 that they were a team that could exceed expectations, however 2014 was a reminder that they are also a team that can fail dismally.

The men from Bloemfontein only managed four wins in the competition, equal to the rebels, but with a few more bonus points to come 14th.

They will hope to emulate their 2013 form again in 2015, however, after losing three big players in Trevor Nyakane, Pieter Labuschagné and skipper Ardriaan Strauss it might be a difficult task.

Emirates LionsEmirates Lions:

The Lions were the surprise package of the year in 2014, they may not have troubled the top tier of the table but by their standards it was an extremely successful year as they managed seven wins – a record for the men from Johannesburg.

The Currie Cup backed up the Lions good form as they reached the Final against Western Province. 2015 will be a defining year for the Lions as they looked to keep building on 2014.

Cell C SharksCell C Sharks:

The Sharks topped the South African conference at the end of the regular season in 2014, however a second meeting with the Crusaders in the semifinal proved to be a bridge too far for the Durban outfit.

The Sharks are a team that will be pushing for the title and after a good start to last year’s season they will be hoping that they can keep the intensity going for the whole of 2015.

StormersDHL Stormers:

The Stormers suffered from a dreadful draw that saw them lose all of their tour games early in the season, this made it hard for the men from the Cape to come back.

The Currie Cup season showed a change in mentality and form for Western province, The Stormers will be hoping some of that form can run over into Super Rugby 2015.

New Zealand:

HighlandersHighlanders:

The Highlanders impressed in the 2014 session of Super Rugby and will want to build on that with more solid performances from their key men.

ChiefsChiefs:

The Chiefs were the definition of an up-and-down side in the 2014 season as the defending champions started strong then stuttered after two back-to-back draws on South Africa.

The return of Sonny Bill Williams will be a major talking point and could even be a factor in getting the Chiefs back to their glory days.

BluesBlues:

The Blues had a season to forget in 2014 as they sat bottom of the New Zealand conference, albeit in a very tough conference.

The 2015 instalment does not promise to be any easier and with the likes of experienced campaigners Piri Weepu and Ma’a Nonu departing the Blues will have to rely on some of their exciting youngsters.

CrusadersCrusaders:

The Crusaders built up from an incredibly slow start to make their way to yet another Final in 2014, only to stumble to the Waratahs at the final hurdle.

The Crusaders are always a good bet to make it far in the competition and 2015 should not be any different with their class and pedigree.

HurricanesHurricanes:

The Hurricanes were impressive to watch as their backline ignited the 2014 Super Rugby with the likes of TJ Perenara, Julian Savea, Conrad Smith, Cory Jane and Beauden Barrett running the show.

They will hope to bring that attacking brand of rugby back in 2015 under new coach Chris Boyd with the departure of Mark Hammett to Cardiff Blues.

BrumbiesBrumbies:

The Brumbies continued on from their impressive 2013 season by making it to the semifinals of the 2014 competition with a good mix of experience and youthful players.

Western ForceWestern Force:

The perennial strugglers in the Australian conference impressed by their standards in 2014 racking up nine wins and finishing third over the Reds and the Rebels.

Melbourne RebelsMelbourne Rebels:

It was another poor season last year for the Rebels as they managed to rack up a measly four wins, one less than the Reds.

2015 may be another tough year for the Rebels who have a lot of ground to make up on their Australian counterparts, not to mention the overseas opponents.

RedsReds:

The Reds 2014 season harped back to their darker days when the Queenslanders propped up the foot of the table, not like the 2012 season where they were crowned champions.

A lot of work is needed to get the Reds back to their best, and that has been admitted by coach Richard Graham, however the influx of quality players like James O’Connor and Karmichael Hunt may be the required spark.

WaratahsWaratahs:

The reigning champions have a lot to prove after they set a huge marker in 2014 by lifting the trophy after defeating the Crusader.

They have huge stars in the squad and controversial, yet effective, coach Michael Cheika will be the driving force behind them defending their crown.

24 Responses to Super Rugby: All 15 Super Rugby sides… in a nutshell

  • 1

? Where did Wiaan Liebenberg go?

  • 2

lots of turnover, balanced with the Kiwi sides and the Tjarks, more players leaving than coming in for the other Saffa sides.

Some consistency for the Tahs, so it would be tough to bet against them for back to back titles in 2015… only problem will be the oddness of having the Wallaby coach.

  • 3

Sharks again to be the top SA side, Bulls will again probably go unbeaten at Loftus, but they can’t afford another year without an away win.
The problem the Bulls and Stormers have is in the last 2 years the Cheetahs have learnt to beat them in Bloem, whereas in the past those games were a sure fire 4 points.
The Lions will contend this year and be difficult, especially at Ellis Park.
Stormers and Cheetahs to upset one or two opponents here and there, but won’t be close to competing for any other honors than the wooden spoon.
The NZ conference will be interesting, but I’m giving it to the Chiefs over the Crusaders this year, especially with SBW back ( also think they will be overall winners)
Aussies to be between the Tahs and the Reds. The Reds have some very good acquisitions, only question is whether they will play ball or self implode with brain farts and all night parties.

  • 4

Hopefully the Bulls had worked on their ball skills a bit in the off season. They’ve got the players, they just need some fresh ideas.

  • 5

In terms of the balance between the inflow and outflow of players the Stormers are the worst off as the have gained two players while losing 13.

  • 6

A bit confused regarding the Stormers squad, it lists Gary van Aswegen as an ‘out’ player – to Eastern Province Kings but has him in the squad, and the squad also has Jean de Villiers in it, surely he is out for a long time will be make any Super rugby? Even if de Villiers does make it back right towards the end of Super rugby surely you can’t have him taking up a place in the squad for all the time he won’t be playing.

“Stormers squad: Martin Dreyer, Vincent Koch, Oli Kebble, Steven Kitshoff, Frans Malherbe, Sti Sithole, Alistair Vermaak, Bongi Mbonambi, Siyabonga Ntubeni, Mike Willemse, Ruan Botha, Manuel Carizza, Eben Etzebeth, Jean Kleyn, Jurie van Vuuren, Schalk Burger, Nizaam Carr, Rynhardt Elstadt, Rohan Kitshoff, Siya Kolisi, Sikhumbuzo Notshe, Michael Rhodes, Duane Vermeulen, Nic Groom, Godlen Masimla, Louis Schreuder, Demetri Catrakilis, Kurt Coleman, Ryno Eksteen, Gary van Aswegen, Damian de Allende, Juan de Jongh, Jean de Villiers, Seabelo Senatla, Kobus van Wyk, Devon Williams, Cheslin Kolbe, Jaco Taute”

Was wondering who Jason Jenkins in the Bulls squad was so did a search. Still very young (turned 19 in December) but a big lad 2.02m, 123kg, and quite a versatile sportsman from St Albans (past head boy), from this interview it seems he was more into his cricket a few years ago, only recently coming into rugby:

  • 8

    7 @ Bullscot:
Entertaining interview, his last option is to go study 😀

He is huge even as a 16 year old, when he only converted to rugby.

    SA Sides:

My predictions, ranked form 1 to 5 and including the loss of Springbok players later on in the competition due to the RWC

Stormers – They have a stable squad with lots of game breakers and decent depth; and have successfully shifted to an attacking approach.
Sharks – Few good gains in new players on wing and no 8 but the same bogey man will visit them close to the play-offs
Bulls – They are where Provnice was last year, between two styles of play, they will get better this year but not fully transform. They have the personnel, heck they have always had the players, the coaching (or lack of) screws them
Lions – Might even end 3rd in the SA standings, the pack will dominate but the proof would be when the injuries comes along
Cheetahs – Lost a lot of good players but their main issue is the lack of vision from the coaching staff. They will be dismal this year

    NZ Sides:

Chiefs – Losing finalist, and with SBW back, one heck of a good side
Crusaders – Expect them not to start off as slowly as usual, semi finalist again
Blues – Expecting a more stable season, good line breakers
Hurricanes – Will implode again come the second part
Highlanders – Start of with a bang, die off wit a bang

    Aus sides:
Tahs – Overall winner as well, just a dam good side
Reds – Great new signings, if they can gel could reach the play-offs
Brumbies – as bad as they are good at times
Force – should be fun to watch
Rebels – should not be fun to watch

    8 @ MacroBlom:
Ha yes I think when he got to the Blue Bulls they would have stressed to him that he must study something, just like they did with the latest young recruits who they welcomed yesterday. He seems to have taken to the game quickly to have taken to it so late and making it to his school’s first team, I see he played for our U19s last year, probably still a bit too young to play for us in this Super Rugby but as part of the training squad he should learn a lot and they must obviously rate him to put him in it so young.

    9 @ Gena_ZA:
Hi Gena yes I would tend to agree with your assessment of Stormers chances I was thinking along similar lines when I read Norties comment earlier, they have incredible depth at loose forward so should be able to rotate nicely which will be good for the Boks in a World Cup year, I think their chances really hinge around who isn’t injured. If Schalk, Etsebeth Vermeulen Kolisi and Melherbe stay away from injuries they have a core of strong top class forwards to build the team around. Only area am not sure of is their locks they may have to play utility players like Rhodes and Elstadt there.
Although having said that still have to back my Bulls even if there is a lot of inexperience in our locks.

    @ Bullscot:
The Bulls have some good depth, our main problems is at hooker and Full back, everywhere else we are well stocked. Nardus vd Walt is a hugely robust player in the loose forwards as well, though he will likely only play if there are injuries, he will put quite a few players on their arse, a real Rynardt Elstadt type of player.

oh and the coaching, im hoping Ludeke wont get brainwashed by the media and armchair coaches into believing that we cant win without a “fetcher” even if we have to force players to play that role, while other Saffa teams played to their loosies strengths and did well enough without playing a fetcher.

    @ Bullscot:
AC will play Vermeulen, Carr and Elstadt till they are injured.

    Excited about the season!

    Shortcomings in the SA teams:

    Bulls:
    1 Hooker short (starter excellent)
1 Good wing short but a few who could come through in 2015 – will be interesting to see what Jamba Olengo can do
1 Fullback short, hope Jesse Kriel plays as starter over Jurgen Visser… Visser is diabolically bad
Biggest problem is lack of coaching vision and innovation and favouratism in selections by Ludeke

    Sharks:
    1 Good lock short
Loosie depth is a problem but starters are good
Will be interesting to see how the new coaching structure goes

    Stormers:
1 Heavier hooker short, the 2 hookers there are good but light
    2 Good props short
Scrumhalves a bit one-dimentional as far as I’m concerned
Definately 1 Centre short with the long term injury of Jean, starters great though
Overall I see Tight 5 problems, if the Stormers are not careful!

    Lions:
1 or 2 Locks short but the basics are there
    1 Scrumhalf short
    Centres are injury prone
    Maybe 1 fullback short
Question is whether they will be able to build enough on their 2014 progress.

    Cheetahs:
    Average hookers
    2 Props short
    1 Lock short
Game plan and defence is a problem, hope I’m wrong but think Cheetahs will end last in the Conference

Yeah, I’d also drive a Cooler Box if I was an Aussie Rugby supporter!

    Happy-Grin

PS! Where’s your Cooler Box parked?

    @ grootblousmile:
Note the “corporate” colours though, ideal for Newlands…

Nanny State cooler box not permitted to have alcohol in it.

A sweet tangerine (naartjie) juice in Perth, or a iced Kiwifruit juice on the east coast! For the rest of Aus, just some brackish billabong water.

It was mostly in jest 😳

To be honest, Spies has had little to add lately on field other than a good lineout jumper and actually his defense improved a lot by the end of 2013, BUT his biggest asset is that he is a fantastic captain, while Flip is more passive and tries to lead by example and while matfield was there no one really knew who to follow. Spies will be a huge stabilizing factor for the Bulls, massive.
