TrevisoEdinburghSam Hidalgo-Clyne showed his promise in an Edinburgh shirt from minute one as he scored his first Guinness PRO12 try for the club in a thumping 48-0 victory over Treviso.

The 21-year-old, who has featured predominantly off the bench for Edinburgh this season, went over inside a minute, with Mike Coman, WP Nel, Grayson Hart, Roddy Grant and Dave Denton also touching down in the bonus-point win.

Treviso finished the game with 14 men after Romulo Acosta was shown a straight Red Card for punching, while the result means they are still without a win in this season’s competition.

The hosts got off to the best possible start, scoring a try in the first minute through scrum-half Hidalgo-Clyne after an excellent interchange of passing between Jack Cuthbert and Greig Tonks.

Receiving the kick-off, Joe Carlisle failed to find touch with his clearance, allowing Cuthbert and Tonks to exchange passes before the latter fed Hidalgo-Clyne to touch down.

The 21-year-old then converted his own score for a 7-0 lead after just two minutes but he was in trouble from the next kick-off when his clearance was charged down.

Thankfully centre Andries Strauss was on hand to recover the loose ball and clear but an infringement by Ben Toolis handed the visitors a penalty, from which they kicked for the corner.

A successful catch and drive followed but strong defensive work from Edinburgh five metres from their own try-line, most notably from No 8 Denton, thwarted the Treviso attack.

Hidalgo-Clyne had a chance to extend his side’s advantage with a penalty on ten minutes, but his effort was wayward for just right of centre.

He made amends on 16 minutes however, making no mistake from a similar position to take Edinburgh’s lead out to 10-0.

A period of Edinburgh pressure followed – Treviso warned for their ill-discipline in the set-piece – and eventually they had their second try of the evening through Coman.

After multiple phases, the ball found Coman and with a little help from his fellow forwards he powered over, Hidalgo-Clyne adding the extras for 17-0 on 26 minutes.

Treviso had practically all of the possession for the remainder of the half but a well-organised Edinburgh defence stood firm, although several handling errors from the Italian’s also played their part.

Edinburgh, completely dominant at scrum time during the first half, picked up where they left off at the set-piece and with a solid base to build an attack from, they soon earned another penalty within range – Hidalgo-Clyne getting the first points of the second half on 50 minutes.

Treviso were then reduced to 14 men as Francesco Minto was yellow carded for a foolish shove at the ruck and they were unsurprisingly soon under immense pressure.

A quick break from Tim Visser first threatened to add to the scoreboard and although Treviso earned themselves a line-out in defender the wing’s break, Edinburgh turned the ball over and added a third score.

After winning the line-out, Alasdair Dickinson made a break for the line and although he was challenged just short, replacement WP Nel picked the ball up and touched down from the next phase.

Hidalgo-Clyne again added a simple conversion to take the score on to 27-0 and he soon had the tee in his hand again after Visser and replacement Hart combined for the latter to score.

The sin-binning of Minto was beginning to really hurt the visitors, replacement Tom Heathcote picking up from where Hidalgo-Clyne left off by adding the extras.

Tensions boiled over just after the hour as Treviso’s Romulo Acosta was shown a straight red card for punching Fraser McKenzie, Edinburgh’s Hart was also yellow carded for his reaction to the incident.

After the slight break in play it was Edinburgh who resumed their dominance and went over for another try – this time Grant touching down with Heathcote adding the extras for 41-0.

There was still time for Denton to add Edinburgh’s sixth try of the evening, converted by Heathcote, giving the Scottish side their biggest win of the Guinness PRO12 season by some way.
