The fiancée of British Royal Marine Brett Williams, who was beaten to death at King’s Park Stadium last year, said on Thursday she would not attend the resumption of the murder trial because none of the four accused had shown remorse or shame.

Brothers Blayne, 24, and Kyle Shepard, 26, and friends Andries van der Merwe, 24, and Dustin van Wyk, 24, are due back in court on Monday.

The accused, who are out on bail of R5 000 each, have all pleaded not guilty to charges of murder as well as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, crimen injuria and public violence.

The charges relate to the events of March 23 last year after the Sharks-Rebels rugby match at the stadium.

When the trial began earlier this year, Louise Scott flew from England with William’s best friend and fellow marine, Josh Mills. They stayed with family friends in Durban and she faithfully attended each day of the trial in the Durban Regional Court, sitting in the back row of the gallery.

But in an interview with the Daily News on Thursday from the UK, Scott said she would not make the trip again.

Apart from her commitments there, Scott claimed the accused – whose guilt or innocence is yet to be determined – had not shown any emotion about the death of her partner, with whom she has a 4-year-old daughter.

“I watched them for five days last time and they showed no shame or remorse. I don’t want to witness that again,” she said. “I hope the magistrate and prosecution team do the right thing. I shall wait to see what happens.”

Scott said she had come to Durban then to watch proceedings out of respect for her fiancée, and to see justice done.

Blayne Shepard’s best friend and gym buddy, Grant Cramer, was the State’s first witness. He was involved in a fight with Williams that night and was also initially arrested and charged with the crimes. But the State withdrew the charges, saying his actions were in self-defence and he was not involved in the later brawl that led to Williams’s death.

Cramer told the court that Williams had been the first to throw a punch in two fights that had broken out after the rugby match.

The State alleges that on March 23, Cramer’s girlfriend, Kristen Cooper, fought with Blayne Shepard and they parted company.

Williams was loitering around the tractor shed area of the stadium and in a drunken state got into a fight with Cramer and was knocked unconscious, it is alleged.

Security guards and paramedics revived Williams, and Cramer said he had returned to look for his missing medallion when his four friends arrived and a brawl ensued with Williams. It is alleged the accused kicked, punched and shoved Williams.

Another State witness, Fidelity Security Services general manager Neil Burger, testified to seeing Blayne Shepard kicking and trampling on Williams. He said he then saw Shepard high-five a man.

Under cross-examination, the security company was accused of being involved in a smokescreen as it stood to lose millions of rand were the contract to be terminated.

The paramedics who attended the scene are still to testify, as are further eyewitnesses, the police and doctors.
