Marnitz Boshoff

Marnitz Boshoff

Xerox Golden Lions:

Golden Lions head coach Johan Ackermann has named his 22-man side to take on Griquas in a Currie Cup match in Kimberley on Saturday afternoon.

In the forwards, prop Jacques van Rooyen and flank Warwick Tecklenburg will both start the match after moving up from the bench.

Meanwhile, in the backline, Ross Cronje will start at scrumhalf and Howard Mnisi will come in at inside centre.

However, the big news is the return of flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff to the bench. Boshoff was initially ruled out for the season with a broken arm, but has recovered sufficiently to take his spot on the bench.

Vodacom Blue Bulls:

Springbok JJ Engelbrecht has replaced the injured William Small-Smith at outside centre for the Bulls’ clash with the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

The young centre injured his knee and suffered some bone bruising, ruling him out of the upcoming clash.

Akona Ndungane returns to the wing with Bjorn Basson falling out of the match-day squad all together.

Piet van Zyl continues his rotation with Rudy Paige who drops down to the bench, while in the forwards the same thing happens at hooker where Bongi Mbonambi gets his shot in the No.2 jumper.

Jacques du Plessis has been named on the flank after sitting out Monday’s practice, but he will be fit to play after returning to the training park on Tuesday.

Vodacom Blue Bulls: 15 Ulrich Beyers, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Burger Odendaal, 11 Sampie Mastriet, 10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9 Piet van Zyl, 8 Jono Ross (Captain), 7 Jacques du Plessis, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Grant Hattingh, 4 Paul Willemse, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Dean Greyling

Good to see Boshoff back so soon, thought he would be out for the year.
Van der Walt has really impressed these last few weeks, so Lions well set for fly halves with those two

    1 @ nortierd:
Jantjies returning for SR as well, so a cupboard full of 10’s but only a limited supply of 9’s!

Lions are going to miss Maanhare (Britz). He covers anywhere from 4 – 8 and just gets on with the job. Will be difficult to replace.

    @ Scrumdown:
    True.
I got a bit irritated with an article on SARugbymag the other day. A photo of Frans Steyn with a leading article about a 50m penalty he kicked in Japan. ( which decent kicker doesn’t kick 50m plus lately? Even SP Marais landed two monster kicks against the Bulls)
Buried right at the bottom was Jantjies who kicked 3 conversions, a penalty and a drop goal, also in Japan.
    But Fattie gets the headline

    3 @ nortierd:
I think the less media attention their players attract the happier the Lions are.

Let’s face it, I donth think the bank account is exactly bulging down in New Doornfontein, and if the more affluent SA Provinces start lining up with their cheque books, the Lions will battle to hold on to the talent they are unearthing and developing.

Same old same old I guess.

Good to see Bossie back. But when are we going to get the full 23 man squad in Currie Cup rugby? Still struggling to get my head around 22 after SR, and all the internationals.
