Siya Kolisi

Springbok flank Siya Kolisi will be out for at least four weeks after hurting both of his knees in Western Province’s 35-33 Currie Cup loss to the Golden Lions in Johannesburg at the weekend.

The defeat, which included a losing bonus point, was WP’s first loss of the 2014 Currie Cup season, but it has come at a cost for the 2012 champions.

According to WP’s official website, Kolisi suffered a torn Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) in both of his knees and is now in a race against the clock to be back for the Currie Cup playoffs.

Wing Kobus van Wyk and hooker Stephan Coetzee are the other injury worries after the weekend.

WP will host Griquas at Newlands this coming Saturday (kick-off 15:00 SA Time) and the WP team will be announced on Thursday.

The full Western Province injury report on Monday:

  • Flank Siya Kolisi has a grade one tear in the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) in both his knees. It’s touch and go for the playoffs for him – it’s a four / six-week injury which will come right with rest.
  • Wing Kobus van Wyk took a knock to the head against the Lions. He will have a concussion test done and he will be given time until Thursday.
  • Hooker Stephan Coetzee (ankle) has a bit of swelling. He will be given until Wednesday to prove his fitness ahead of Thursday’s team announcement.
  • Prop Oli Kebble (ankle) is 100% available for selection this week, after also sitting out last week.

Bad luck, just as it looked like he was regaining form.

    Kings lose hooker to injury

Port Elizabeth – The EP Kings will be without the services of the dynamic hooker, Edgar Marutlulle, this weekend, following a shoulder injury sustained during the game against the Blue Bulls at Nelson Mandela Bay on Friday night.

According to the Kings’ medical team Marutlulle’s injury has ruled him out for the next two weeks.

The team will also be without David Bullbring, who injured his right ankle during the game, and who will be going for a scan of the joint on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury, but could be out for the next four weeks.

Tim Whitehead also sat out of training this afternoon, having been battling with a calf niggle, but has been cleared for selection.

On the positive side, Thembelani Bholi and Siyanda Grey have both recovered from the flu and are available for selection, while Aidon Davis has also been cleared for selection following a knee injury that saw him miss out last week’s game.

Another blow to the team is that skipper Luke Watson will most likely miss out the rest of the season, as the medical team expressed concerns around his recovery from a concussion sustained during a game against the Blue Bulls in Pretoria in August.

Watson will be going for an MRI scan on Tuesday…..

    @ Pietman:
How much is Watson costing them, and what return are they getting from him?

    @ nortierd:

Even if they don’t pay him anything it is still too much.
Any possible sponsors of note would be reluctant to put real money into EP rugby with him and dad running the business down there. So, he is not only costing EP in terms of his own salary (R3m the last we heard) and absence on the field, but also in ”marketability” of the whole concept of, in Cheeky’s own words, “South Africa’s first black rugby franchise”.
I, for one, have really enjoyed the EP resurgence in our rugby, and we can only hope they will continue to attract young stars from the Amatolas and Border areas.

    @ Pietman:
They could contract 5 or 6 youngsters on his salary alone

I am not a Luke Watson fan… he makes it almost impossible for anyone to really support him… though he is a good rugby player… when he’s fit…

but for a concussion to rule him out for the rest of the season… it must have been a fairly severe knock and injury he got…

this must surely signal the end of his playing career…

i hope it is not as serious as it sounds… and that he recovers fully with no lingering side effects…
all jokes aside… no one deserves to be left with brain damage from rugby…

    6 @ ufo:
Hi ufo certainly agree with you on this one, really hate to read about these serious injuries to rugby players especially head injuries. Wish Luke Watson all the best with the recovery, maybe this is the final call for him to hang up his boots not worth risking things more and risking longer term damage. Don’t know much about his abilities outside playing but maybe he can come back to rugby and start the process of learning to be a coach.

I remember when Luke played the first time for the Stormers after the speech debacle.
It was against Saracens and a fair portion of the crowd booed him every time he touched the ball. Near the end of the match he scored under the posts.. some boos again ( less than in the beginning)…. he stopped, and gave them the stare.

I also remember his last match for WP.. captaining a very young team against the full Blue Bull team…during those days the Bulls were still a mighty force…it was the quarter final game during which Bakkies was yellowed for taking Aplon out in the ruck and Schalk made the best tackle of his career on Fourie du Preez…WP were all over them but lost in the last minute when Morne kicked the penalty after Nakalavaku’s stupidity.

After the match Luke did a lap round the field thanking the supporters… he received a standing applause and even the haters (if there were any left) did not dare to boo.

Lets hope he will play again.

Is there a more expensive rugby player in the world per minute played than Lucas Whatsembi?
