Deon Stegmann

Deon Stegmann has received a 1 week ban for foul play.

Blue Bulls captain and flank Deon Stegmann was suspended for 1 week on Wednesday for striking a player with his elbow in their Currie Cup Premier Division clash against the EP Kings last Friday.

His Blue Bulls team mate, hooker Bongi Mbonambi, meanwhile, was cleared of further sanction after receiving a Yellow Card in the match for charging into a ruck without using his arms.

Stegmann and Mbonambi both appeared before a SARU judicial committee in Pretoria on Tuesday after being sent to the sin-bin in their clash in Port Elizabeth.

Stegmann received a Red Card in the 69th minute of the match for contravening Law 10.4 (a), which states that a player must not strike an opponent with the fist or arm, including the elbow, shoulder, head or knee. The judicial officer, Advocate Tokkie van Zyl, on Tuesday night reserved his judgement on the incident but announced on Wednesday that Stegmann was suspended for a week.

Van Zyl also ruled that the Yellow Card Golden Lions Under 21 lock Ramone Samuels received for contravening Law 10.4 (a) in their clash against Western Province last Saturday was a sufficient sanction.

Western Province Under 21 flyhalf Robert du Preez will appear at a SARU disciplinary hearing in Cape Town on Wednesday after being cited for lifting a player in a tackle and dropping him to the ground in the match at Ellis Park, which was in breach of Law 10.4 (j).

From the sublime to the ridiculous!

Pin a man to the ground, smash your elbow into his jaw a few times, and get a week off.

Absolute BS. Tokkie van Zyl should be sentenced to 5 fore arm smashes to the jaw by a 110kg sportsman and then see how he feels about a 1 week ban.

No wonder bleeding heart liberals don’t want to allow their sons to play Rugby.

    Thuggery is after all condoned.

looks like deon survived the coin toss haha

    unbelievable

Can already picture his lawyer (Cue court scene of Lipstiek Dipstiek)
Your honor, Deon is a good boy, a churchgoing boy, does that face look like the face of a thug?……ok, maybe a little bit, but he is really innocent of this charge.
If you rewind the video you will actually see that the King player repeatedly hit my client’s elbow with his face, he is the real victim here.

The lost bonus point for the Bulls might have helped to reduce his ban. Otherwise it is difficult to understand only a one week ban.

    @ dWeePer:
I think so too, also he did get a red card already.

The disciplinary roulette system is a joke.

Having not seen footage of it, is there a link, maybe not really wise to make judgement but from your description sounds like it was nasty and he was very lucky to get off with such a lenient sentence, there is no place for this even more so from our captain, hopefully it was just a one off moment of madness from Stegmann.

    @ Bullscot:
Hey bully there was an article a few weeks ago on how parents want to apparently remove scrums from school sport, I think that’s more or less what SD was aiming at(I assume), not you 🙂

    9 @ MacroBok:
Hi MacroBok ahh that makes more sense then, had mentioned in a post that with all the injuries we see that wasn’t as keen as before to let my son take up rugby. Phew at least that’s me off the hook then
BHL Bullscot seems to much like DHL WP for my liking Happy-Grin

    Hi Bullscot.

No reference to you whatsoever, but just (another) dig at the Rugby authorities who don’t seem to give a tinkers cuss about the negative images that incidents like this leave on young parents.

SA Rugby is a strange place to be.

Not really related but in a similar vein.

I recently met an Indian chap and his son watching a game at my local.

The Father asked where his son could play away from school as the high school he was attending refused to even entertain the kid at practice as they thought he was “too small”.

The Father then told me that the family had recently returned from New Zealand where they had lived for a number of years, and that the kid had played weight group Rugby FOR AUCKLAND!

That just sums up SA Rugby and it’s attitude to me.

Gee that’s crazy Scrumdown, how can they do that to a young guy, good on his dad for still staying keen and trying to find a club for his boy to play at. You would think that they would want to encourage as many people as possible to play.
Just yesterday I watched an England Rugby video where they showed some work they were doing in a school, boys and girls of all sizes, mostly small, but that didn’t stop them – the children all seemed so enthusiastic. Here is the link if you want to watch it:
