South AfricaJuan Smith will complete a remarkable return to international rugby when he runs out for the Springboks against Argentina in Salta on Saturday, in the Springboks’ second Test of The Rugby Championship (kick-off 21:40 SA Time).

Smith’s inclusion at flank is one of three changes to the starting 15, with a further four changes on the bench.

Gurthrö Steenkamp (prop) and Eben Etzebeth (lock) will start in the tight five, with Tendai Mtawarira and Bakkies Botha moving to the bench. Marcell Coetzee will join them amongst the replacements after coming in as a late substitute for the injured Willem Alberts last weekend.

The final change to the team, which beat Argentina by 13-6 last weekend in Pretoria, is the inclusion of Lwazi Mvovo on the bench.

“We have a couple of options at blindside flank, but we’ve decided that this will be a great opportunity to give Juan a chance,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“If it wasn’t for an injury which kept him out in June, he would’ve played a part in the Castle Lager Incoming Series. He was one of Toulon’s best players after more than two years out of the game and helped them to win two major competitions.”

“Apart from experience and leadership, Juan is a superb ball-carrier and also brilliant at the back of the lineouts, where we missed Willem Alberts last week. Our lineouts are an important attacking platform and we need to improve this week – I’m sure Juan will add another dimension.”

Meyer added: “It’s also wonderful to have Eben back to full fitness and he’ll slot in at lock without any problems.”

“’Beast’ recently returned from an injury which kept him out for some time and it was decided to rotate him and Gurthrö mainly because of the short turn-around after our travel to Argentina.”

Saturday’s Test will be the Springboks’ first visit to Salta, in the north west of Argentina.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge. Although we were happy with the result in Pretoria, we were not happy with the performance and this is an opportunity to show improvement against a tough opponent away from home,” said Meyer.

Now let’s see those Argies try their kuk again at the fringe of the breakdowns…..
With 10 Free Staters/ex Blikore in the team they will have their arses handed to them this time, Boks by at least 20 and a bonus point.

While in the Antipodes the chorus of whinging and bleating is building up to a crescendo …. Overjoy

Cape Town – A popular Kiwi scribe has criticised South African referee Jaco Peyper for his performance during last weekend’s 12-all Rugby Championship draw between Australia and New Zealand in Sydney.

New Zealand Herald newspaper columnist Gregor Paul expressed his concern at the standard of international refereeing in general, and singled out Peyper for making “erratic” decisions.

    In his column, Paul wrote:

“Another big game, another poor refereeing performance – world rugby is not far from crisis in regard to the state of officialdom.

“Jaco Peyper’s confusing and erratic decisions in the opening Bledisloe Cup clash have meant confidence isn’t high that the Rugby Championship will fulfil its potential as a provider of drama and spectacle.

“Rugby’s recent history has been dominated by games where the role played by the referee was viewed as the decisive factor. Games where both teams felt the referee’s actions altered the nature and outcome of the contest.

“Peyper’s name is just one more to add to the list. The South African was inconsistent and – as hinted by the All Blacks – just plain wrong at times in the 12-all draw in Sydney.

“The players were denied the opportunity to play the game they wanted and instead of rugby, it became Cluedo – crimes being committed with no one sure whether it was Colonel Mustard with the candlestick in the library or Mrs Peacock with some rope in the conservatory.”

    Great stuff…!!
    GO BOKKE, moer hulle!!! Slam-Dunk

Juan is one of my all time favourite Boks.

IMO this is our best possible loose forward combo, with Albert’s coming off the bench as impact player.

    @ Jeraldjay:

I don’t think HM in his wildest dreams expected Juan to make it back. At this level. HM’s first choice loose trio is Flo, Alberts and Duane. But as you said, this trio could surpass that. Great to see the guy come full circle. Another man of steel.

Congrats Juan, hope Guthro can follow up the solid games he had in June.

I cant see the Boks winning this one.
