The Lions have suffered key injury blows ahead of their opening Currie Cup clash against the Blue Bulls at Ellis Park this weekend.

According to reports, promising front ranker Julian Redelinghuys has injured his calf muscle and could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

To make matters worse, wings Anthony Volmink and Courtnall Skosan and scrumhalf Michael Bondesio were also injured in training last week.

“You almost can’t believe it. Four players getting injured in one week’s training. It’s not ideal so soon before the Currie Cup, but it gives opportunities for others,” said Lions coach Johan Ackermann.

Utility back Deon van Rensburg is also still on the sidelines with a rib injury as well as centre Alwyn Hollenbach (shoulder).

Ackermann said he would call up some of the Under 21 players into his squad ahead of the Bulls clash this Saturday (17:05 SA Time kick-off).
