Joe Pietersen

Ex- Stormers & Biarritz utility back, Joe Pietersen

The Cheetahs have found a replacement for flyhalf Johan Goosen who will leave them to further his career in France.

According to reports, former Stormers back Joe Pietersen will play for the Cheetahs in next year’s Super Rugby competition.

Volksblad

This comes after the Cheetahs had been unsuccessful in luring Sharks flyhalf Fred Zeilinga to Bloemfontein.

Pietersen, who joined French club Biarritz in 2013, can play fullback, wing and flyhalf, but he was lured to Bloemfontein with the aim of filling the void left by Goosen, who will further his career at French Top 14 outfit Racing Metro.

Biarritz were relegated from the Top 14 last season, which allowed Pietersen to look for new employers.

Pietersen will duel for the Cheetahs’ flyhalf spot with Elgar Watts, who recently extended his contract by a further two years.

Pietersen will only be available from next year though, so Watts will be their main pivot during this year’s Currie Cup.

    @ smallies:

No, unfortunately I missed that. I read somewhere though that the Northern Korea media has told their audience that their team is in the final where they will meet Portugal. The also claimed to have beaten Japan 7-0 en route to the final….. lol… the world is going mad, ..

    Cheers, have a good one.

The Soccer world cup provided good tv but it will also be good to catch up on some lost sleep if that is medically possible.

Just got back home after a week in the fairest Cape.

Let me start by congratulating the Sharks on a good win against the Stormers on Saturday. Hopefully they can bring their supporters more joy in the next few weeks.

    @Pietman & Rob
I don’t think the late Turkey Shields would be able to do what you want him to do.

    @ Nama:
Heh, Turkey passed on? Sorry to hear that, I didn’t know. But he was young still, about 60 I reckon?
Saw him on stage at Paarl Gym about 6 years sgo, with Thinus Linee, on that SuperSport show, a real rugby character.

What a boykie, kudus Cornel! Loyalty bru, I salute you Yes-Sir

Cape Town – Springbok wing Cornal Hendricks has extended his contract with the Cheetahs for another year.

According to Volksblad, Western Province and the Blue Bulls were interested in signing the 26-year-old speedster but he decided to stay in Bloemfontein.

His contract is due to expire at the end of October, but has now been extended by another year.

And Willie Britz also on his way to Bloemies, according to ‘ die blad vannie volk”.

Blikskottel, hierdie Nortie is flippin slim, ek se julle!

But it was their tackling – or a rather the lack of it – which cost Naka Drotské’s men dearly this season.

Statistics derived after the completion of the regular season show that the Cheetahs conceded the most tries (59) as well as the most points (527). Their tackle success rate (84.4%) is also the lowest of all 15 teams in the competition.

It also came as no surprise when noted that three Cheetahs players feature in the top eight of the Tackles Missed category.

Rayno Benjamin was the season’s worst defender, slipping no fewer than 33 tackles. He is three ahead of the Brumbies’ Nic White on the unwanted list.

The other two Cheetahs players to feature in the category are Willie le Roux (27 missed tackles) in fifth spot and Sarel Pretorius (24) in eighth spot.

There’s no doubt the Cheetahs pose a massive attacking threat, but until a solution for a very important part of the modern game is found, don’t expect a return to the playoffs any time soon for the men from Bloemfontein.

    @ Pietman:
So gepraat van stats. ‘n Paar stats wat Tony Johnston in sy rubriek uitgelig het.

    * The forward who played the most minutes in the round robin, with a whopping 1 280, is the Waratahs captain and Wallaby flanker Michael Hooper.

Focusing on international players, others with big minutes in Australia included Wallaby locks James Horwill (1 231), Rob Simmons (1 165) and Kane Douglas (1 218) and Utility Scott Fardy (1 260).

In New Zealand All Black locks Sam Whitelock (1 176) and Brodie Retallick (1 114) were heavily used as was flanker Liam Messam (1 113).

The most heavily worked of the big-name South African players was Duane Vermeulen, who got through a massive 1 225 minutes, but of the rest only Willem Alberts (1 125), Bismarck du Plessis (1 065) and Victor Matfield (1 007) stood out over a thousand minutes, so it would appear that the Springbok forwards have not been badly managed in terms of playing time.

    Ander stats:

    * The most effective scrummaging team was…..drum roll….. the Lions, who were secure on their own ball and made a mess of many an opponent. This is noted in the official Opta stats service as a 91 per cent success rate, although I’m not entirely sure what that means, presumably off their own ball.

    • The Lions also had the best goal kicking percentage as a team, with 84.5 per cent, closely followed by the Bulls and then the Highlanders and Blues from New Zealand.

    • Marnitz Boshoff and Johan Goosen were the only players to score in all four ways

    • Boshoff just missed the chance to become the first player to score 200 points in his first season but his tally of 189 is still a record for a rookie. He kicked the most penalty goals (40) and drop goals (8) and his overall goal kicking success rate of 87 per cent was equal with Simon Hickey of the Blues for the best by a player taking over 50 shots at goal.

    • The Bulls, for all the ball they won, recorded the fewest carries, metres gained, line breaks and offloads.

    • The Sharks defence was fantastic, conceding the fewest tries (22).

    • The Cheetahs gave up the most tries (59), and points (527),

    • Injuries were a massive blight on the Stormers season, probably a factor in a big drop in their lineout success (77 per cent). They also scored the fewest points per game.

So, wanneer is Turkey oorlede, onlangs, weet jy dalk?

  • 45

    @ Pietman:
Gesteek toe hy ‘n geveg probeer stop tydens ‘n partytjie of soiets.
