The Vodacom Bulls have already lost their chance to bring Jacques Potgieter back, and now it seems they’re likely to lose another tussle with the Lions for the services of promising winger Luther Obi.

Obi has been seen as the long-term replacement at the Pretoria union for veteran winger Akona Ndungane, whose contract runs out at the end of the season.

But the Bulls were negotiating with Obi anyway, until they were told to stop by the Leopards Rugby Union as he still has a year to run on his contract.

The Leopards have made it clear that they will entertain a move for Obi for Vodacom Super Rugby if the Bulls want him, but that this will be subject to a transfer fee negotiation.

“We have no problem loaning Luther to the Bulls for Super Rugby but then it is subject to the transfer or loan fee,” Leopards CEO Louis du Plessis said.

“If Luther is to play Super Rugby, then his first port of call would be the Lions as we are linked with them.”

Obi, who was born in Nigeria, but played his junior representative rugby at the Lions, represented the Junior Boks at the 2013 IRB Junior World Championship and played for Pukke in this year’s Varsity Cup.

A proven finisher, he has played for the Leopards at senior level in last year’s Absa Currie Cup first division, making 14 appearances and scoring eight tries in total.

The Bulls have signed Springbok hooker Adriaan Strauss and flanker Lappies Labuschagne for next season but seem set to lose hooker Bongi Mbonambi to the Stormers.

This guy seems to have MASSIVE potential.

    Big, strong and fast.

Been saying since the Varsity Cup that the Lions need to contract him but…………….

One get’s the distinct feeling that the Lions are somewhat in a financial quagmire.

As my ex wife’s late father would have siad, “No brass lad, no brass.”

    @ smallies:
Ek sien dat Strauss, Lappies en Trevor moontlik soontoe gaan.
Wonder of Adrian die nuwe Bulls kaptein gaan word, en wat Spies daarvan sal dink.
    Of selfs Victor?

    @ nortierd:
die bulle se kak die jaar was, as matfield speel maak dit nie saak wie kaptein is nie.

How is this for scare mongering?

“According to the supersport.com website, it is an open secret that there is much unhappiness at Loftus Versfeld at the moment since the news broke that the Bulls were chasing Springbok hooker Adriaan Strauss to make a move to Pretoria. All three their current hookers are unhappy, with coach Frans Ludeke and high performance manager Xander Janse van Rensburg struggling to put out the fires of discontent that are currently raging at the union.”

If they are unhappy with competition then they must go. Maku can not expect any favours after the currie cup season. I feel bad for Bongi, going to the stormers, he will be a good signing.

This Xander Janse van Rensburg needs to go. Last year was a major screw up with the contracts, which he or someone above him, tried to rectify to an extent with the JLP and Dewald Potgieter signings (Matfield’s return was also a blessing for him). The J Potgieter (failed) and now Strauss signings are merely admitting to bad planning. This is the type of signings which should have happened last year this time, to ensure continuity when players leave, not the quick fix – let’s buy some has been/never was/never will be Kings players.
