Rossouw de KlerkGlasgow Warriors have signed South African prop Rossouw de Klerk from the Cheetahs, subject to a visa and medical.

The 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Scotstoun and will join up with Gregor Townsend’s squad for pre-season training at the end of the month.

The 1.85m tighthead began his senior career in Pretoria, making his debut for the Blue Bulls in 2009. He went on to make 41 appearances for them, 14 of which were in Super Rugby.

In 2013 de Klerk joined the Cheetahs and has made 14 appearances in the Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup and has played seven times in Super Rugby this season.

De Klerk becomes Glasgow’s third prop to join the club this off-season and fifth signing ahead of the 2014/15 season, following the arrivals of Alex Allan, Euan Murray, James Downey and Murray McConnell.

“I’m delighted to have signed for the Warriors and I’m looking forward to playing in the Pro12 and European Rugby Champions Cup next season,” De Klerk said.

“It’s always been an ambition of mine to play for a European club and I’m looking forward to going over to Scotland later this month and meeting my new teammates in Glasgow.”

“I’m expecting tough competition to get into the team but that is a great challenge and something which really motivates me.”

“Glasgow have made excellent progress over the last couple of seasons and I’m looking forward to being a part of that.”

Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: “To get a tighthead of Rossouw’s quality into the club is fantastic and he’ll add depth and competition to our front row.

“Playing in that position you know you’re going to play a lot of rugby throughout the season and Rossouw already has a lot of experience for a 24-year-old.”

“He has come through Super Rugby with the Cheetahs and prior to that the Blue Bulls and those two teams are renowned for their scrummaging.”

“Rossouw is also very good in the loose and a strong tackler and has already played more than 20 games in Super Rugby.”

“It’s great news that he’s joining us and we look forward to welcoming him to the club later this month.”

Welcome to Glasgow Warriors to Rossouw, hopefully his visa and medical are just a formality to get through. He could be a useful addition to the squad especially during the autumn internationals and 6 Nations when many of Glasgow’s squad will be away on international duty.

Only 5 signings made so far, am guessing Glasgow will still need to get a few more in as I think quite a few more than 5 left at end of last season plus we go into the season with quite a few of the top players out to injury.

Good player, from Tommie Laubscher’s old school on the West coast, Vredenburg.
Those boys are raised on vaaljapie, bokkoms and potjiekos… a tough man himself, Rossouw should fit right in with the Glaswegian dock gang, a bit like Saldanha down there I believe Happy-Grin
