World XV coach Nick Mallett says he was keen to include Cheetahs flank Heinrich Brüssow in his squad to face the Springboks.

The teams clash at Newlands on Saturday in what will be the Boks’ first international outing of the year.

Mallett requested to include the Cheetahs flank in his squad to face the Boks but he was already earmarked for the first Bok training camp of the year, which took place in Durban last week.

Brüssow was not included in Bok coach Heyneke Meyer’s final squad named last Saturday, but because he was part of the Bok training camp earlier in the week, he became ineligible for the World XV side.

Brüssow has never played a Test under Meyer and last represented his country at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Mallett said he would have liked to send Brüssow on in the second half in Steffon Armitage’s place.

“It would have kept the Boks busy because he (Brüssow) is the sort of player they will encounter in games against the All Blacks and Australia,” said Mallett.

Kick-off for Saturday’s game is scheduled for 17:00 SA Time.

very unfair, Steffon Armitage is basically the same player though.

    Spiteful, more than unfair MB.
HM doesn’t rate and like Brussouw, we all know this, yet he was so spiteful to stop him for playing for the World XV
No other explanation, except as Smallies mentioned, scared Brussouw will show up his choice loosies

    @ nortierd:
It does not make sense, I can’t even imagine what brussouw must be feeling like, last year I was not so impressed, but this year he has been awesome, would have been nice to see him play against the boks. I agree with Mallet, he is the type of player we will encounter like hooper and cane.

Indeed it would be nice if he was with us

    @ MacroBok:
I am sometimes gobsmacked by the attitude of SA Rugby’s “elite” in terms of how they go about selecting, coaching and managing the country’s top players.

It seems that things are just about NEVER done with the total interest of SA Rugby at heart.

Maybe that’s why we are continually second best?

I think it is easy to point fingers in this situation when we don’t know the facts, this is south african rugby, any debate involving springbok rugby and provincial matters will be followed by debate, we are really gullible people. So we always need to keep an open mind.

We are second best, but this is one of the great rugby teams we are second to, people need to remember that.

what he said – SA will always find a way to keep ourselves from being the best
Imagine a SA where politics, self interest (provincialism) and the weak currency is non existent.
Imagine SARFU management doing all for the best interest of the players and SA Rugby

In that world we WILL be no 1 in the world, I honestly belief it
But will all the bullshit going on we will still push the current no1 team close

I was trying to be politically correct.

The blunt, baseball bat carrying style is not always appreciated by all bloggers.
