Retiring Saracens captain Steve Borthwick will take up a coaching role with Eddie Jones’ Japan at the conclusion of the Premiership this weekend.

Borthwick will take over the role of forwards coach for the Cherry Blossoms after he retires from playing at the end of the season.

On adding the all-time Premiership appearance record holder to their coaching team a Japan Rugby spokesman said: “Steve Borthwick, who will be joining our Japan Team has supported us over the past two years as a spot coach.

“Steve’s lineout expertise has made a significant improvement in helping us win more lineouts.”

“Being a former captain of England, Steve has a good character and has great trust from the players.”

“On the road to the World Cup, forwards will be the key to a successful campaign and we believe Steve, as a forward coach, will play a vital role”.
