Allister CoetzeeDHL StormersAllister Coetzee believes the Stormer’s gameplan does not need adjusting and in fact, a return to the basics will give them some winning momentum.

The Cape Town-based team have lost five games in a row, including all four tour games as well as their opening match against upcoming opponents, the Lions.

The Stormers have never been miles away from a win in any of these games, making Coetzee believe that small tweaks in the basics of the game is what is needed to turn around their fortunes.

The coach wants his team to stick to the processes he and his coaching staff have put in play since the season began, especially in regards to perfecting their lineout and what they do from turn over possession.

“The processes are right, we just need to execute.

“I think our options were always good, our plans were always good but I think the execution is what let us down.

“Players are understanding about the importance of getting the processes back on track.

“I think that has been the focus, stay process driven to make sure we get our lineout and our set piece functioning again,” Coetzee said

Coetzee believes these factors of the game will be the key to his team scoring more points; if the Stormers simplify their lineout and attack cleverly from turn over ball – they should see more points on the board, according to the coach.

“You have got to make sure that you set piece is functioning and rest will come, we have looked at stats and everything.

“If you handle it [your set piece] well you will get your gift possession, which is your turn over possession.”

“What I mean by that is, if you utilize it [turn over ball] properly then you give yourself a hell of a good chance of winning any game,” Coetzee added.

It is clear from Coetzee that he hopes the lineout and turnover ball will be a major source of scoring opportunities in the upcoming games

“Lineouts are one of your main sources of scoring opportunities, turn over possession is also one of your big sources of scoring and I think we have not given ourselves the best chances from turn over possession,” the coach said

“Our line out has functioned in some games and not in others so those two platforms alone have denied us opportunities to score from.”

With the Stormers sitting out last weekends action, Coetzee has had some time to reflect on his team’s situation, allowing him to ‘take stock’ of how things have gone.

“We are taking stock again of where we are, the personal that we have as well as the team.

“We are looking at how the plan suited the personal that we have got. Should we not look at something else and simplify more?

“There is not much change that we can do, but it is just make sure that we hone in on the basics of the game again, that’s why I said the set piece is crucial.

“Making use of turn over possession is important because our defense is strong and it gives you access to that platform of deciding what we do with turnover possession,” the coach added

The Stormers have always prided themselves on their defensive style of play, but Coetzee is aware of defensive set piece frailties.

“If you recall, it was our ball, we threw it in [the scrum] and it was not a good scrum,” the coach said when speaking of the try scored by the Waratahs after a ball was badly handled at the base of a scrum inside the Stormers 22.

“We conceded 13 points from defensive set pieces last game.

“And then another scrum penalty and another scrum penalty, so that is 13 points from exit set phases.”

Oh fark Toetie…. is that all you have learnt from Gert Smal’s “stock take?”.

Everybody knows that the lineout has not and will never function as long as Deon plays hooker.

It is not “rock” science … as France Ludeke has said.

Jeeeez Toetie, everybody but you (and that includes all your own Stormers supporters) sees how kak your game plan is, choppie… get with the progam bud… or resign!

You have not added anything this season, in fact from 2006 & 2007 where you stifled the Springbok backiline under Jake White and had to be rescued by Eddie Jones… you have been unable to play a well-balanced game plan and induce measures to make your team score enough tries in the process.

You’ve had some of the most brilliant backline players at your disposal, yet fail to impress.

Your time has come and gone, and the sooner you go, the better for the Stormers.

Is there any assurance that if AC does change the Stormers’ game plan then more victories will follow? 😉
For a SR team that won 91% of its matches during 2011-2013 seasons under SARU referees the issue might be steeper to turn around than just by changing a game plan
Saying that this coming weekend the Stormers are guaranteed a win against the Lions, all may be forgotten then?
    🙂

Interesting stats. For it to be meaningful we however have to compare it to similar stats for each and every other team in the competition.

Can you provide it as well as the source?

Seriously??? What the fuck! “the Stormer’s gameplan does not need adjusting” I am so befok, I’m going to shut down my pc and go for a walk before I throw it out the window.

  • 7

I CANNOT believe my eyes. It’s fucking insane to say there’s nothing wrong with their game plan. Shit, it’s not even rugby!

not a fan of the stormers and I refuse to watch any game they play this year because it irritates the kak out of me unless they play my bulls or maybe the sharks.

That said the Stompies still have 6 home games this season and will make a impact on the final standings while the tjarks still have 6 games away from home.

Thanks Grootblousmile, I’ve been reading here often but couldn’t help myself when I read Toeties drivel this morning. Jeez man. @ grootblousmile:

@ MacroBull: What frustrates the hell out of me, MacroBull, is that I can clearly see that some members of the team CAN actually play rugby, but have to conform to this idiotic game plan.

  • 12

Too further compound our woes, Peter Grant to start at fullback with Demitri at 10.
If Toetie’s game plan is to have a 15 who can clear the ball 10 meters at a time, at least this weekend his game plan will be executed properly with the pop gun boot at the back.

Has anyone yet figured out why Sailosi Tokkelossie was even contracted?
As much as Nakalevuki made mistakes, he also had some bright moments when he was properly awake and scored a couple of decent tries.
This chap, can’t even recall seeing or hearing him do anything in the matches he has played in.

    @ robzim:
    Hi Rob
You have to go to a site name Rugby Planet and dig into their Archive section, trouble is they don’t keep record beyond last season
Then there is a site from NZ name http://www.lassen.co.nz/s14tab.php were the previous stats could be found, maintenance of both sites in keeping previous seasons’ data was reduced due to cost last two years but I am sure you could Google it and find the data elsewhere
The Sharks : 72% of their wins were under SARU referees 2011-2013
The Bulls : 88.5% of their wins were under SARU referees 2011-20153
The Stormes: 91% of their wins were under SARU referees
If you took a wager then their home games were bankers under the local referees’ watch other than Kaplan and Lawrence (SA Lawrence that us)

  • 15

    @ Hondo:
Is this not because the majority of wins are home game wins and because we have home town refs it makes sense?

Many of those wins could have been against other SA teams and therefore would obviously have hometown refs.

You would need to look at the raw data a bit closer I think.

  • 16

    @ Stormersboy:

    Please don’t confuse him.

He thinks raw data is some kind of new superfood.

  • 17

    @ gunther:
    😆 Indeed.

  • 18

Some kind of freestate equivalent of the edamame bean.

  • 19

    Sheesh… I see Toetie just got divorced… from reality…

    Isn’t there a spare bed in Shrien’s ward…?

    Daze

  • 20

@ ufo: Yes please! Apparently Shrien shrieked the other night when the bedsprings squeeked, maybe Toetie can keep him calm: Relax, Shrien. Just stick to the game plan. Flok.

    You are kidding me.

    @Macrobull
    Seriaaaaaaaas!!!!!!!

  • 23

Excellent…exactly the game plan I would advocate…win your own ball at set piece and when you nab turnover ball, use it well…brilliant…masterstroke…
