ScotlandScotland international Ruaridh Jackson is set to join Wasps next season after being told he is free to leave Glasgow Warriors.

The 23-times capped No 10 has been offered a lucrative deal to sign for the Aviva Premiership outfit, who are chasing a place in the European Cup next season.

The 26-year-old has fallen out of favour at Glasgow, with Finn Russell and Duncan Weir both ahead of him the pecking order. Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend also has Peter Horne, who has recently returned after eight months out injured, as an option at stand-off.

Jackson is expected to finalise a deal to take him to Adams Park over the next few days.

With 34-year-old Andy Goode in the twilight of his career at Wasps, Jackson has an opportunity to make the No 10 jersey his own next season — something he must do if he wishes to make the Scotland squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Wasps have a big budget to strengthen for the next league campaign, with Italian international Lorenzo Cittadini, who signed yesterday, joining England’s James Gaskell and Welsh star Bradley Davies at the club from next season.

He was signed by former Glasgow head coach Sean Lineen, who spotted him playing for Robert Gordon’s College in the Royal Navy Scottish Schools Sevens in 2006.

Townsend’s decision to let Jackson go brings to an end his six-year association with the Scotstoun club during which time he played 108 times scoring a total of 443 points.

He was signed by former Glasgow head coach Sean Lineen, who spotted him playing for Robert Gordon’s College in the Royal Navy Scottish Schools Sevens in 2006.

Lineen took him on as understudy to Dan Parks and it was expected that when the experienced man left for Cardiff Blues in 2010 that Jackson would become first-choice No 10. That failed to happen as Weir came on the scene and the decision by Townsend to offer the 22-year-old a new two-year deal last month, plus the emergence of Russell, made Jackson realise the writing was on the wall.
