BullsArno BothaThe Vodacom Bulls loose forward Arno Botha has been ruled out of rugby for at least six months after picking up an ACL injury against the DHL Stormers in Saturday’s season opening friendly in Polokwane, team doctor Org Strauss confirmed on Monday.

The injury, which will see Botha miss most of the 2014 Vodacom Super Rugby season, came in his first match back after injuring the same knee in June last year, which ruled him out of the rest of the 2013 season.

Botha was taken for scans in Pretoria, which confirmed the diagnosis of an injury to his anterior cruciate ligaments. It will require surgical correction, to be done in Pretoria next week Tuesday.

“Arno was pivotal for our Super Rugby campaign during 2014. He was very influential in his time on the field against the Stormers before his injury and it was great to see him return to his best form after his previous injury.” Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said

“We wish Arno all the best for the surgery as well as the road to recovery ahead and together with our medical and rehabilitation team we will work together to ensure Arno’s return to the field later this year.”

In other setback Jesse Kriel, who scored a try for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in their match against the Golden Lions, was ruled out for a month due to a calf injury.

Strauss has more positive news about the rest of the squad following the Polokwane match.

Deon Stegmann will miss a week of training following a groin abductor strain while Francois Hougaard, Jurgen Visser and Dean Greyling will return to training on Tuesday.

Marvin Orie (four weeks, leg fracture) and Mornè Mellett (two weeks, back) are still out of action.

    Aggeneeeeeeeee!

Ai man, Bulls will miss Arno Botha big time.

Vleis Engelbrecht will have to get his head right quickly for the Blindside job!

  • 2

    NO!!
If he is out for 6 months he will miss the whole Tournament apart from the final, as he will be back in August only.
But he’ll at least be available for Currie cup.

Sad, he might become a legend if he stops getting injured.

Do you guys also pick up that it’s the YOUNGER players picking up the longer term injuries?

Johan Goosen, Eben Etzebeth, Chesliin Kolbe, Arno Botha, Andries Coetzee… ect

I wonder if it has something to do with Gymming and taking mass and muscle building supplements from too early and age, to build mass and muscle… and resulting in the connecting points of muscles being weaker than it would have been with natural progressive growth through hard graft, like on a farm or something.

Yip. It comes from being to big, to young and a kak load of overtraining.

These kids gym, bulk, train, take “suppliments ( I will not mention Spies) way too much from about 15 without proper rest. Their bodies just can’t handle it.

  • 7

The season is too long. And the players bodies just cannot take the strain, especially at a young age.

    7 @ Lion4ever:
In Arno’s case it was his 1st game in more than 6 months…

The younger bodies seem more prone to injury… and it’s always some of the joints (knees, ankles, heels, shoulder AC joints) getting injured, as if the muscle attachment areas are weaker and the attachment areas are not mature or strongly binded to the bone and cartlige.

As if the muscle developed faster than their attching points.

    @ grootblousmile:
That is how i see it. The guys are much stronger at a younger age than ever, almost as if they are outgrowing their natural skeletal strength.

I know my self that back in the day when i used to push it too hard in they gym I didn’t end up with torn muscles but rather injured tendons and ligaments.

The connective tissue isn’t keeping up with the gym work IMO.

my pa het my so drie maande voor die seisoen begin het laat pik slaan en hout kap,was nooit in n gym gewees nie en my speel gewig was 105-110 vandag is ek 103 maar ek het nog nooit n liggament geskeur nie,die laaitys vandag kort meer senings en minder mussels, arno moet oppas hy is amper in n siklus van beserings.

    @ Loosehead:
Jip, I agree fully. They bulk up to fast. All this supplements must be banned. It’s only for bodybuilders who sit and lye on their backs and train. This is why I would like to see school rugby be group into weight classes and not age classes.

Ek dink nou net, as die bulle vir Jacque de Plessis kies in botha se plek gaan ek myself bek”K

In my jare het ons altyd voor ’n groot wedstryd net ’n mengsel van melk, suiker en brandewyn gedrink.

    Hoekom daai eksotiese kombinasie? Eenvoudig!

Die melk om jou krag te gee, die suiker vir energie en die brandewyn om jou idees te gee wat om met al die krag en energie aan te vang.

Good comments and i agree.
